Just got my first N64 after spending my childhood as a Playstation kid.
I got Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox and Smash for starters.
What else should I get?

>> No.2606065

>>2606058
Theres not a whole lot...

Gauntlet Legends if you actually have friends. N64 is the best version becasue you can bank items and choose when to use them.

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber is alright if you're into the series.

If you like Banjo Kazooie snorefest of a collectathon you can look at the other Rare games. Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, and Jet Force Gemini.

Golden Eye and Perfect Dark would be recommended, but I genuinely feel they're pretty fucking bad outside of nostalgia or playing with friends.

Mario Party is fun even if you're playing solo. The only good Mario Party games are on the N64.

Super Mario 64 is another of the "obvious" choices. Its solid, but its kind of dated.

Theres really not too many games worth mentioning honestly.

Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart 64 are decent.

Shadowgate 64 can be interesting if you're a fan of the original. Same with Castlevania 64.

Resident Evil 2 and Megaman Legends are also available on N64, but if you own a PS1 its usually better to play on that.

Bomberman 64 and Bomberman Hero are kind of interesting games but they really are a departure from the series.

Blast Corps is another pretty fun game.

Chameleon Twist 1 and 2 are alright, pretty simple and fun little platformers.

Theres more, but honestly, N64 kinda bites.

>> No.2606067

mischief makers

>> No.2606073

Mischeif Makers and Sin 7 Punishment are awesome, but you'll need an adapter to play Japanese games for S&P.

Jet Force Gemini is great and probably Rare's best game on the system (I'm not really a fan of their collectathons).

Mario 64 is amazing, probably the best Mario platformer to date.

The Zelda games are obviously incredible too, make sure you start with Ocarina.

Wave Race 64
Pilotwings 64
1080 Snowboarding
Snowboard Kids 1 & 2
Beetle Adventure Racing
Star Wars Rogue Squadron (although it's also on PC, original version is N64)
Doom 64
Hybrid Heaven
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Goemon's Great Adventure
Paper Mario
F-Zero X

Also as already mentioned, Mischief Makers is a must.
If you can import (and mod your N64 to play JP games) both Sin and Punishment and Bangai-O are great Treasure titles that can be played without knowledge of japanese.

Also if you like wrestling games, the games developed by AKI for the N64 are some of the best around.

Ill admit, I'm a PSXfag to the core, and I'll happily shitpost nonsense about N64 games all day and all night, just to reap the benefits of a steady diet of Nintendrone tears and frustration. However, I did own an N64 back in the day, and I still emulate the games today. Its an honestly decent console.

But for fuck sakes, Mario 64 was shit back then and its fucking shit now. I mean, different strokes and all that shit, but god damn it people. If you're emulating and using a good controller, sure. Mario 64 can actually be made to be fun. But the addition of decent frame rate, lack of slowdown and SMOOTH controls can do that. But the original cart version is just awful. It has all this potential, sure, but it's just good gameplay shoved into a redundant game that makes you beat every level 8 fucking times to complete it, coupled with hardware that couldn't run the game all that great and the worst controller fucking ever.

How was that ever an enjoyable experience?
(what I find funny is that I admitting to being a consoletroll who posts nonsense to get a raise out of people, and nintendrones will STILL respond angrily to this post)

You like fighting games? You like wacky japanese games? You like fluid 2D sprite with good animations? then you must play Rakuga Kids, a good effort from Konami. Looks extremely "kiddy" at first, but then you realize it's very surreal, and actually not a bad fighting game at all.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Wonder Project J2

Highly regarded, but I've played and didn't like them, though you should try anyway because your tastes != my tastes and you might like them:
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Jet Force Gemini
Mischief Makers
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
Paper Mario
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Zelda: Majora's Mask

Fun as fuck and love them in all their glory:
Blast Corps
Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Pilotwings 64
Wave Race 64

Never played, but always wanted to:
Bomberman 64
Bomberman Hero

Really only fun in multiplayer with at least two other people:
Conker Bad Fur day
Gauntlet Legends
Golden Eye
Mario Party

Fun in both single and muliplayer but especially multiplayer:
Diddy Kong Racing
Mario Kart 64

Never played, but seems to have a poor reputation for some reason:
Donkey Kong 64

Fucking terribad unless you're into Pokeymanz and/or have a GB to connect to it:
Pokemon Stadium
Pokemon Stadium 2
Pokemon Snap

Why not play a different port? Are there any benefits to the N64 versions over others?:
Doom 64
Megaman 64 (MM Legends)
Resident Evil 2

>highest end sound cards available at the time

The game used sampled midi music but didn't provide the necessary instrument assets to back it up as the composer and audio tech guys intended. Also some other stuff I don't recall. Point is PS1 is an accurate representation of how the music was meant to be heard while the stock PC version is not.

Yeah, that's basically what I was trying to get at. I do remember that by using different sound libraries (or whatever, proper terms left my head years ago) we could get the midi to sound different and some of the tracks got close, but others like Cosmo Canyon and any that used the drums sounded very different.

You have to keep in mind that a lot of that which went on in this thread really has nothing to do with the actual consoles. /vr/ has at least one very try hard troll who spews the same stuff about kids here almost every day and in multiple topics. He's quite easy to spot and just fishing for attention, it's always best to just ignore him.

I think Mario Kart 64 was the greatest house party game of all time. Guys, grills, everyone played. Built in 4 controller ports on the N64 made it super social. I might be biased because of my age but I've never seen another game people enjoyed more when they were drunk and hanging out. With other games like Smash Bros. it was always a sausage fest of shit talking and the grills stayed away.

All in all it was a very social console. I'd rather play PSX by myself but I'd always want an N64 for social events. People forget that each console had it's good points. The N64 was the right tool to bring a house party together.

This. Why do kids call it that? Why can't they say PS? PSX wasn't even released in the west.

Several gaming magazines referred to it as that, in places where those gaming mags were popular it became one of the names people used for the system.

>taking a bait so big

he's being ironic.
the fact there was a limited edition of the PS2 called "PSX" released only in Japan in the early 00s is actually more obscure than the fact the PS was referred to as "PSX" by western journos.
"PS" is the correct and official way to abbreviate the first PlayStation, but nobody does, it's always either PS1, PSOne, PSO or PSX. All wrong.

Yeah, the multiplayer component in N64 games is almost a lost thing, I believe only the small Smash 64 community play smash multiplayer, and they're playing online.

This thread makes me embarrassed to be on this board. I think we all need to put our preferences for things into perspective here.

Anyways OP, go buy Wayne Gretzky 3d hockey for $3 and play it drunk with your friends like its 1997. Isn't that what the n64 should be all about anyways?

Whatever killed that social component in gaming? Was it online play? I mean sure it's social but it seems like there aren't games anymore that really feel like they fit in a party environment. I don't really know anyone with either wii that has 4 controllers and it doesn't draw a crowd like. My cousin turned 21 a few months back and no one was interested in his newer consoles at his party. I brought my Pi2 just for Mario Kart 64 with 4 wireless xbox360 controllers and everyone was down to play just like the old days. (before everyone gives me shit I have the original console as well.)
