Previous thread - >>2567779

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

These past few threads have been great, keep it up!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright!
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

I'd imagine that it'd depend on if there's anything wrong with the image. If it is too dark, up the brightness. If the colors are dull, turn up the contrast. You could make the image worse depending on what you adjust, but if you feel like you're going too far one way, adjust it back the other way. If you have some means of outputting color bars from whatever console you have hooked up it can make adjusting picture settings easier.

They're portable, which is actually nice if you have friends, and i use them to test console/cable builds with so i don't hurt my 20" sets. PVMs are so fricking durable it's pretty much impossible to do that last anyway, but you never know.

MultiFormat Support - Will display anything from 240p/480i all the way up to 1080i properly without processing lag.
Very high TVL count- 1000 for 16:9 and 4:3 versus 800/600 for stuff like the 20L5. This is its horizontal resolution, or how much information it can resolve horizontally without losing any clarity. A set with 600 or so is more than enough for almost anything retro, but if you have any plans 7th gen, 8th gen, or perhaps just watching higher res video, a higher count can definitely come in handy.
It's also a native widescreen set, so displaying widescreen content doesn't result in any letterboxing; This does result in pillar boxing for 4:3 content, but the size of the monitor still results in a picture the same approximate size as a 20'' model.

The D32E1WE/U shares the same specs except in a large size, but is plagued by picture quality issues.

Some people dislike the higher TVL count as being too sharp and giving a picture more in common with a filtered LCD than a standard CRT, but this is up to personal taste. Lower line count, MultiFormat sets like the L5 series are a bit of a middle ground, as they have a lower line count but preserve support for higher resolutions.

Alpha 3 is one of the games that are already capable of outputting in 240p on their own. It was actually the RGB output that needed to be enabled. Capcom disabled it on at least a few of their games, including Third Strike; I can only assume it was to not compete with themselves on the arcade front.

I was actually looking around for a 240p edit myself, and there doesn't seem to be much of anything for it.

Other games that supposedly output 240p are
Bangai-O
Black Matrix A/D
Gunbird 2
Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure
King of Fighters Dream Match 1999
Last Blade 2: Final Edition
Marvel vs Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes
Princess Maker Collection
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike
Street Fighter 3: Double Impact
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Twinkle Star Sprites

I can personally confirm the Street Fighters, Twinkle Star Sprites, MvC, KoF, JoJo, and Bangia-O. Holding Start+L on boot is usually how it's enabled.

You might have some better luck looking for PS2 ports with hex edits available, but even those are a bit slim.

What do I need in order to play old console games (NTSC) on a CRT computer monitor? A scan doubler/scaler? How much would I need to spend?

Wii has component out, so I imagine that one would be easy. I have pic related but, not surprisingly, it doesn't work.

get a genuine gbs 8220 from jamma boards (I bought a fake one and it was shit) and get a scan line generator like the ones on ebay from norway (based on the retro vga2 design which is the best imo) you also need to mod the gbs to accept rgb via scart (plenty of guides out there)

once you're done all that there is also a guy on shmups forum that wrote some better firmware for the gbs scalers, you need a raspberry pi to use it.

Tried google and found all sorts of answers. Some say the vertical deflection is fucked or it's just a capacitor issue. Apparently there's a ghetto fix of adjusting it out of the screen too.

Currently I use a GTX670 and use the DVI-I port and an adapter to connect my CRT monitor for "retro" emulation.

I'm planning on upgrading my GPU to a Radeon R9 390.
I know the R9 390 does not have an analog video port, only digital video in the form of HDMI, DisplayPort, and DVI-D ports.

Would there be a way to output to a VGA monitor using this GPU?
The motherboard I'd be upgrading to has a VGA port, but I understand it would not go through the GPU at all, making some emulation a bit lackluster.

I use a Sony with a strobe and a XRGB 3. Will never use a CRT as my main display again. Imo it's superior in all ways minus no light guns ever. I still enjoy the CRT threads though. They have their place and nothing is ever going to replace CRTs. I and everyone else who played these games when they were new used a CRT. It's not something I'll forget.

Not to be an ass or anything but BFI and the strobe technologies like LightBoost are two different things. BFI adds a black frame. The strobes are blank frames. At least from what I understand about LightBoost. It could just be BFI. Strobes work much better. Strobes will give as little blur as a CRT does, none.

One thing of note with monitors is LightBoost is controlled by Nvidia graphic cards. I don't believe you can use the strobe with a scaler or emulation. BenQ is the other company that has an option. Theirs works differently so I think it'll work with a scaler. Don't hold me to that. I believe they're the only two monitor companies with some kind of Strobe. And Asus also but they use LightBoost.

Threads and forums of interest if you'd like to research the technologies.

Today I was going through my moms attic in search for a CRT (she has like 12 CRTs up there). I came across a Mitsubishi CRT, that kinda looked like pic related, but not quite. Not sure if it was a "Diamondtron" or how it's called.

I was quite happy, until I noticed there were no AC cable. I checked the whole TV and found a tiny bit of wire sticking out from the side. I shit you not, someone was cutting the wires of ALL the CRTs (wasn't my mom, there are some more people living in the house).

So my question is, how do I repair a cut wire? Can I just cut another wire and kinda stick them together?

This is very easy to repair but you might need to open each set if the cable is too short, and do it anyways.
However, always consider strain relief and make sure that every cable you fixed can withstand a strong pull or else a accident (where your fixed cable gets loose) can fuck up the chassis, yourself, attached equipment and maybe cause a house fire.

I have a really stupid ass question. Have any of you tried an HDMI to S-video or HDMI to VGA to S-video adapter for emulating older games? I can't seem to find much documentation of it. I would like to hook my Raspberry Pi 2 (Maybe my PC for some N64 games that I can't buy yet). I'm mainly concerned that most of the adapter board things always say that it outputs 480i since most retro games run in 240p. >it doesnt have a vga in could a vga to component cable work?

No, you are supposed to use a breakout adapter to get the individual R,G,B and C-sync lines and connect those to whatever input your display has. VGA cannot directly be output to component, you will need a transcoder that changes the color space from RGB to YpPbPr. Some transcoders may have a VGA input and standard RCA component output, so that might be an option.

depends what letterboxing you use.
If you display a game or video already in LB format, you lose resolution because of black bars.

However, if you display an anamorphic movie and then you use the 16/9 mode on your tv to correct the aspect ratio, you use all the resolution available but on a smaller total height. This is possible because a crt doesn't have a fixed resolution.

As the side note, bluray didn't implement anamorphic aspect ratio, so all 2.35 movies aren't actually full 1080p because of black bars.

I'm aware that the magnets inside poorly-shielded audio equipment can cause distortion to a CRT's picture over time. Does that only occur when the CRT is powered on or when it's off as well?

That's not so much working as it is the electronics of the CRT trying to scan something that it isn't equipped to deal with. The image is doubled because the sync frequency is twice that of what it is expecting. Feeding something in the range of XGA resolution will result in a triple image.

Pin 18 was grounded by soldering a wire between pins 17 and 18

Most electronics would work just fine this way, but it's not a properly grounded SCART plug and some electronics might not work with it. There are at least 5 different pins that should be grounded for using RGB over SCART. Red, Green, and Blue all have their own ground, on pins 13, 9, and 5 respectfully, in addition to Audio and Composite Video Grounds, 4 and 17. Japan doesn't use scart.
Retro console accessories does jp21 and scart cables. Good quality. No idea if they ship out of America though. I assume not American since you're using a Super Famicom.

Not sure what you're talking about.

To clear it up a bit SCART or JP21 carries RGBS just on different pins.
R - red
G - green
B - blue
S - sync
They're separate. Getting RGB is simple. The confusion comes from the S(sync).
For game consoles you're gonna have 3 different sources for sync you can get.
Composite sync or C sync
Composite video as sync
Luma as sync

Quality wise they're all the same. Only time it matters what sync you pick is if hardware dictates it.

Sometimes you can't get csync. In that case a sync stripper can be used to give you csync.

eBay cables are mostly chinese crap that only carry composite.
If you can get an official jp21 cable then go for it. Just make sure you get a BNC splitter wired for jp21 to go with it.

You probably wont need a sync stripper, since if you're using a PVM it should be able to handle composite-sync.

I don't know your situation, but I don't see the need for a SCART setup. Component will give you the best quality out of the three formats that TV seems to take (Composite, S-Video, Component), but it won't take RGB, which is where SCART cables usually come in.
I don't think any retro consoles outputted component out of the box, though. Xbox, PS2, Wii etc. have plenty of cheap Component cables.

>> No.2623959

>>2623917
SCART is a type of cable. If you're an American (or Canadian), as I'm guessing you are based on even having a TV with YPbPr, you've likely never seen one before. No NTSC TV is going to have SCART.

There's good news, though. YPbPr component is indistinguishable from RGB. The bad news is that no retro consoles output it natively that I know of. Except the Playstation 1, by way of playing the games on a Playstation 2.

I just run S-Video with my nintendo consoles, which have a very good S-Video quality, and save my YPbPr for my Playstation 2 and Genesis, for which I have a converter box to turn a SCART RGB signal into a component one.

No problem. It is all rather confusing.

If you want to use SCART at all on an NTSC TV, a converter box is required. If you want RGB output from retro consoles, modification is usually required, and you'll need some way of getting it to output, since standard televisions don't have a VGA or other type of RGB input.

I found the effort entirely not worth it except with the Sega Genesis. The Genesis has some great looking games, but has absolutely dismal composite output. Blurry as hell and weird interference patterns. So I bought a converter for it and it looks great now.

I'm talking about the "software pixels", the ones we're talking about when we talk about the computer generated picture, and yes, there are pixels on a CRT -- the 3 red green and blue dots form a pixel, and in many cases, one of the hardware pixel is shared by 2 "software" pixels which is why there's this little interpolation at the edge of these 2 software pixels.

Didn't want to work with the DC immediately, but a reseating of the cable on the DC side got it working; It seems to be giving similar results to that of the Megaview, so I'm beginning to believe that it's a problem with either the cable or the system rather than a quirk of the monitor(s).

I'd reckon it depends on the size of the tube and how deep it is.
Most tubes made in the last several decades do happen to have a thick piece of glass laminated onto the front to prevent such things (as well as cut down on emissions).

You'd probably be fine so long as it's relatively small and not terribly deep. A little nick shouldn't do much, but I'd stay away if it's more than a couple mms deep and/or multiple inches long.

My Megaview has on a bit off from it's center that you can catch your finger nail on that hasn't caused it any problems, but it's still something to keep in mind.

Yes, there's very very likely some 1-Chip solution where a lot of stuff is integrated into it.
If you're thinking of modding this kind of TV then you better off reading though the whole service manual and the manuals of very related models released in SCART territory.
I remember helping some anon on this, a year ago, i guess.
>so I could imagine it being possible to bypass that conversion somehow and input RGB directly.
Bypassing the chip that outputs RGB to the neckboard is quite a dangerous thing for the tube, rest of the chassis, console/whatever device connected to it and possibly you.
I guarantee that a CRT where you can't set brightness and contrast will annoy you, these adjustments are done in the chip that outputs RGB to the neckboard and it also implements protection for the electron guns by measuring the current of the outputs.

I say it's a more feasible idea to RGB mod a way older set with more discrete/simple chips.
Some early 90s Trinitrons that are composite only may have a chip installed with unused RGB inputs. All they need to activate these would be to apply the 1-3V "fast blanking" voltage to the BLK IN pin, this kind of TV would be the easiest to do and you can normally set the brightness/contrast.

I have a 2004 Sony Triniton 32 inch. I get audio when using my PS2's component cables but no video. Not sure what the issue could be. The AV outputs work fine, but I only get audio out of component. Pic is the TV

Ao I've been fucking with it. Playing PS1 games on my PS2 and it seems stuff is cut off screen a tiny bit at the bottoms. So I turn the "16:9 Enhanced Mode" on and it fixed that. I guess because I'm using component it has issues doing 4:3? I don't know much about aspect ratio.

>> No.2637161

is s-video worth it over component?

>> No.2637174

>>2637161
There's no component out for N64. Only retro games you can play over component without a converter would be PS1 games on a PS2.

Damn son. Look at all them inputs. 4 dedicated RCA jacks. VGI with stereo out for a computer.

I like your late era CRT, bro

I like it too so far. It sounds way better than my old shitty flat screen LCD.

The front also has 1 AV row and S video. I think it's 1080i? I've been figuring things out on games. I'm pretty sure I do have to use "16:9 enhanced mode" with PS1 games while on PS2 using component. Systems using AV I don't think I have to use that, seems wrong when I do.

Is the Scanline Generator SLG3000 any good?
I got rid of my CRT a while ago and this thing uh emulates scanlines on a computer LCD monitor
I want to use it on my 1280x1024 Acer monitor.

Has anyone here heard of the brand "Lumatron" before? That's the brand of my TV but I can't find any info on the manufacturer or the model of my TV. I'm guessing it was produced in Europe sometime during the mid to late 90s. The image quality is pretty good, pic related.

nah, the sony logo and remote look normal.

The set being definitely 90s looking (black case § 2nd generation trinitron logo for 1995 sets and later), it doesn't surprise me, they're not the most commons you'll find, but they're not that unusual.

pretty sure it was 480p, however I think you can configure naomi to run on a 15khz monitor, so it might be compatible with 480i.
highly doubt it has a 240p mode, the main selling point was hires sprites

That SLG is meant for 480p. It's perfect for what it does.

Component doesn't have any issues displaying in 4:3, your HS510 is an HD Trinitron meaning it won't play nice with the SD resolutions of your PS1 games. That set is better suited for the higher-res PS2/3 games.
