Seiken Densetsu games are so fucking boring. This is literally what MMO combat is based off of.

>> No.2590238

Secret of Evermore is not part of the Seiken Densetsu series.

>> No.2590241

>>2590238

It's a spin off and part of the series, it just doesn't have the "Seiken Densetsu" name.

It is just an elaborate romhack basically fo Secret of Mana for Western audiences.

>>2590232
the difficulty curve in Evermore is pretty lopsided, the beginning of the game will absolutely kick your ass but it turns into a piece of cake later on.

>> No.2590249

Action RPGs are all garbage. Mindless button mashing with none of the chill out appeal of turn based games.

Greentext and anime girl reaction image. Seems like the typical action RPG player. You probably like Star Ocean, too.

What's so wrong with it ? Your gif is pretty much realtime with pause like other games have as well, does the menu clicking annoy you or what ?

they weren't allowed access to the SD2/3 source code because they were filthy gaijins, they had to code it from scratch. hence not having time to get multiplayer working.

Turn based games are good when there are actually interesting choices to make in combat. But most RPGs, especially retro ones are just attack-attack-attack-attack on random enemies and nuke magic and heal on bosses.

I prefer having to manually position my character and choose when you attack. Also if you've played Secret of Mana for even just 10 minutes you would realize that mashing is never, ever a good combat strategy in that game.

>>2590386
Legend of Oasis would like to have a word with you. Great controls, interesting puzzles and fun areas to explore.

>> No.2590576

I don't know I usually hate most RPG games and Secret of Evermore is fucking rad.

No dumb anime trash or overly melodramatic shit in it because it's made in the land of the free home of the brave.

SoM's combat is slow and boring. Too much time is spent standing around waiting for the meter to recharge, levelling up magic is tedious, and Sprite basically solos all the bosses with magic. The Soul Blazer series had much faster and more fun combat.

>> No.2590678

>>2590643
I can see that perspective. SoM isn't even close to one of my favorite action RPGs, but of all the things it is, button mashy is certainly not one.

>> No.2590754

>>2590643
I agree. The problema with SoM is that it tried to implement some weird hybrid between action and turn-based gameplay, and not in a good way like, say, Lunar or Megaman Battle Network. Instead, SoM punishes you for trying to be too action-oriented, and never lets you actually control the turns. So you're stuck in a slow, boring in-between in terms of gameplay.

That being said >>2590249 must love SoM then, since it doesn't have button mashing. I'm guessing you'd hate action RPGs if you have needing even the smallest modicum of skill to beat a game, though. Most turn based games are boring because they're too easy. Of course, there are exceptions like Phantasy Star II.

>> No.2590757 [DELETED]

>>2590678
Sad thing is, they could have fixed it by making the meter recharge 3x faster and adding a meter to magic. If it just took long enough to charge that the enemy could get a hit in, that would be disincentive enough for button mashing.

>> No.2590764

>>2590754
Lunar is pure turn-based. Final Fantasy has the awkward turn-based/action hybrid.

>> No.2590769

>>2590764
Well, not all of them. But all of the best known ones (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

>> No.2590771

>>2590678
Sad thing is, they could have fixed it by tweaking the meter speed a bit and adding a meter to magic. It seems like Square couldn't figure out whether SoM was supposed to be an action game or an ATB RPG, so it takes the worst parts of both systems and mashes them together.

>> No.2590772

>>2590754
I love that about SoM. You have to be more careful, charge your weapon and avoid getting hit until you are ready to unleash. It's a good risk/reward system that makes for interesting fights that aren't just about attacking as fast as possible.

>> No.2590776

>>2590772
If you try to charge attack every enemy, you'll spend an hour getting through every screen.

>> No.2590779

>>2590771
True. I still think it's an okay game, just not great. I think both the Oasis games blow the Sieken series out of the water. Much better controls make the combat a lot more fun and the use of elementals in puzzles and the like is done much better. It always confused me that Mana got crazy popular and Beyond Oasis is barely known by comparison.

>> No.2590787

>>2590776
That would be a waste anyways. Not every enemy needs a max level charge. Picking how much to charge your attacks in each scenario is a big part of the fun. Also many of the charges are AOE attacks. It may not be worth your time to build up a big charge on each one, but corralling a few together and doing a spin attack on the group is pretty great.

>> No.2590806

Literally, literally also means figuratively now. It's fucked, but that's the evolution of language for you.

>> No.2590812

People usually make the distinction between action/adventure Zelda style games and Action RPGs by whether there is an experience based leveling system. In Zelda you gain hearts and in Alundra Life Prisms and the like, but it's different from the way you level up in the Seiken games. It's a pretty minor difference, for sure. But that's where the genre boundaries are usually drawn.
