2571358 No.2571358 [Reply] [Original]

I just started playing earthbound and it's so upsetting, I have the best equipment but I die all the time without a chance. Every time I try to run away I can't. The game says that I can get an advantage if I meet the enemy from his back but that's impossible because they face me automatically.
There was a pencil blocking the path so I invested on Orange Kid's invention, because he said it would help me there, but it was useless.
I also gave money to apple kid but I couldn't possibly know his invention could remove the pencil because the game didn't give me a cue.
Now I rescued Paula but she's lvl 1 and dies all the time. Do all party members come at lvl 1? Because if that's how it is the ones you get first will aways be much stronger.
How can this be considered good game design?
I really wanted to like this game, the graphics are lovely and I like the humor but until now i can't say I had a good time because of the gameplay.

Yes

Second, you need to level grind a bit, thats it

There are so many fucking things wrong with this. First of all, the original Japanese release didn't come with a strategy guide, so it's not like the designers built the fucking thing around reading it. Second, it's not fucking impossible to beat the game without it. Third, someone not knowing about the strategy guide doesn't make them a fucking idiot, It just makes them ignorant of a fact not many know about. TBH you can probably go well without a strategy guide. It's an RPG, you talk to people, and it's not like the people in the game are hideously vague like in Final Fantasy NES. (They're vague because they give you shit to do, but that shit you do will kick your ass because it wasn't supposed to be done in that way but the order intended).

Anyway, you don't need a strategy guide for this game. Nothing is too cryptic. Anyway, if you're OP, grinding is a must for newbies, luckily Paula has a Teddy Bear which will be a good punching bag for the time being, if you don't have it then get another one, it takes hits for you. Avoid Slingshots. I used one once and the game became so much harder due to it's terrible accuracy. Stick with bats, and for Paula: Frying Pans. Do you need any more help? I can try to point you to the right direction.

>There are so many fucking things wrong with this. First of all, the original Japanese release didn't come with a strategy guide, so it's not like the designers built the fucking thing around reading it.
OK, so they decided to ship it with a strategy guide just for fun? You really believe that?
>Second, it's not fucking impossible to beat the game without it.
Sure, all you really need to do is realize you have to not press a single button when asked for a password to Belch's Base, and know you have to do nothing for about 2 minutes. Everyone can figure out something that easy.
>Third, someone not knowing about the strategy guide doesn't make them a fucking idiot, It just makes them ignorant of a fact not many know about.
No, but not attempting to figure out why you are having a hard time with an RPG known for being easy IS stupid. Rather than do a quick google and realize "Hey, this game came with a strategy guide, maybe I should check it out", OP instead whined about BAW, THIS IS HARD. That IS stupid.
>Fourth, if you use strategy guides at all, you're a fucking scrub.
You are one of those "People who don't enjoy the game the way I do are ENJOYING IT WRONG!" types eh? Have fun being angry at people for having fun.

>>2572431
>Anyway, you don't need a strategy guide for this game. Nothing is too cryptic.
So...you figured out the password puzzle without anyone telling you? Kinda doubt that.

The majority of people I see claiming that the game doesn't need a guide have already played through the game and either knew the answers from hearing about it already, or used the guide and now are trying to pretend like they didn't.

Wait a minute, are you that same poster that was trying to argue that Castlevania 2 wasn't obtuse?

I don't think it's very common to find pirated copies that aren't made to trick the lockout chip.

That aside, the piracy protection doesn't really change the way the enemies behave, it just dumps a shit ton of enemies on you instead. You'd run into swarms of enemies at every single instance, imagine like six Lil' UFO's in the valley, would be very challenging.

Or like two Territorial Oaks, a Spinning Robot and four Mobile Sprouts. You'd have to be fucking hardcore to get any far in the game at all.

Oh, and wipes your savefile and resets the game at the final boss. Always thought that was delightfully devious manner of copy protection.

Earthbound isn't even a difficult game. I played it last year for the first time expecting some hard as balls JRPG and breezed through it with barely any problem.

Literally the only grinding I had to do in the game. As long as you fight everything in your path, you'll manage most bosses pretty easily. I'm only just past Moonside, so I'm maybe only a third of the way through, but it's been a pretty comfortable progression for me.

You don't really need to grind in Earthbound. All you really need to do is not avoid too many battles. That's how I did it, and the game was moderately challenging.

If you run away a lot or try to avoid most random encounters obviously you're gonna have a bad time.

Also, don't be afraid to use items. The game gives you plenty and you have limited inventory space anyways.

There's a sword which only he can use, which makes his attacks much better, but you basically have to grind like hell against a relatively annoying enemy (Starman Super) which frequently gets paired with a -fucking- annoying enemy (Nuclear Power Robot). It's a very rare drop.
