Still have to play episode 2.

I played the 'Black Mesa' remake for a bit before dropping it hard. Got up to the "On a Rail" level but I wasn't feeling it. Anyone else find it kinda shit or is it because I haven't played HL1 in ages?

>> No.2581841

Went through all the games like 2 years ago except Opposing Force, had enough by that point. I should give it a go. HL is fantastic in any case. By that point FPS had already backed itself into a corner with inferior Doom clones, something fresh was needed. And like Doom, it's still incredibly fun to play and better than most of its followers...

I recall they decided to actually cut it short in the Black Mesa remake.
There's a mod for it which tries to fix that and make it longer.

One of my all-time favorite games. A shooter done right.

Up until this month, I thought it was very original and groundbreaking, but I just watched a play-through of duke nukem 3D, and I now realize they borrowed a lot of stuff. Still awesome though, I wish they'd make more games like this.

>>2581337
half-life 2 is just a run'n'gun shooter. It's nothing like the first.

>>2581726
I think the dark and realistic look kills it.

you should go play duke 3d its all the good parts of half life without any of the ingame cutscenes you cant skip.

I honestly never really -loved- On A Rail, but I still hate that they'd cut it short.
Always kinda liked the chapter in the old silo, you know the one, where you gotta blast the big bastard with the test rocket? It was a fun romp through old disused facilities and bearing down that big old jet on the bastard felt so triumphant.

I'll also say that the Freeman's Mind thing kind of rejuvenated my love for Half-Life, I'd have kind of forgotten about it a bit, and though it showcased a lot of the kind of odd and out of place things in the game, it also reminded me of all the good times.

I haven't actually played Black Mesa yet. Is it actually good? It doesn't have to mimic the gameplay to a tee, but as long as it plays as something of an inbetween of 1 and 2 I think that'd be neat.
I always loved swapping out the models and skins for weapons, and sounds, to change up the feel of the game a bit, shame that there wasn't always the options you would have wanted.
Game always made me want to get a SPAS-12, despite the fact that it's really kind of a piece of shit IRL, it's just a really cool gun.

It's a great game but the gunplay was kinda bad. I enjoyed shit like the tram ride and borderline survival horror in the beginning among other things, but the weapons just didn't feel right.

I like Half-Life 2, but a lot of what I loved as a kid was the graphical aspects, the physics, the sound, the spectacle of it, I hadn't ever seen shit like that before then and it was amazing.

Going back and playing it, it's not flawless, there would definitively be room to improve the game. It's like what, 10 years old now kinda? And then there was the horridly delayed episodes, that never stopped grinding my gears, thanks for shitting on my dreams Gaben.

I'd say that a lot of Half-Life 1's levels were much more interesting, sure, there's nothing like Ravenholm in HL1, but there's nothing like Surface Tension or Xen in HL2.

Just recently tried it out on Dreamcast. Played pretty well apart from the woeful load times.

Not him, but Rail feels kinds samey and seems to just go on and on and on the first time I played. Not so much on later playthroughs, but still feels like a filler.

Xen I like mainly because of how pretty, majestic and colorful it is. You get platforms floating in an endless sky in sunset, low gravity, multitude of alien flora and fauna.
Its new and exciting while still being familiar enough to not throw you for a loop.

I recently played through it, and I found that I rarely actually rode the damn tram, I just ran through the tunnels on foot. Much easier.

Xen had a few spots that I really didn't like (the fucking gonarch; who thought that was a good idea? and the soldier factory), but mostly it was kinda mind blowing, in the sense that you didnt expect anything like it and the idea of going to an alien world (not even in space, its some other plane) was just crazy. 1998, too.

Episode 2 has the best level design out of HL2, IMO.

>> No.2582885

>>2582839
halflife 1 was a smarter game; you had puzzles, meaningful environmental dangers, level layouts to navigate (as opposed to linear corridors like in HL2), each enemy was more threatening, ammo conservation to consider, and a better theme/feel

HL2 is just a simple, linear run'n'gun game
may as well play COD (though COD has better combat)

>> No.2582898

>>2582885
Hey, I agree that HL1 is better. but....

>you had puzzles
>meaningful environmental dangers
So did HL2

>level layouts to navigate (as opposed to linear corridors like in HL2)
HL1 was pretty much linear corridors aswell. Just had slightly more backtracking compared to 2. Its layouts were nowhere near as complex as other 90's shooters.

Surface tension is the bit they cut (the bit where you go through the military base). Black Mesa is really good yeah and the dude that did the Surface tension add on did a really good job too.

What I love about Half Life is the entire first part, up until the surface. Everything about it is incredible survival horror-ish.

What I also loved about HL was its deathmatch. It was super fun with friends
>that bunker level with the nuke button

Too bad HL was praised, remembered and influencial for everything I don't like : the "it's like cutscenes in which you can move omg!", the "life like AI", the "story" and the linearility and "realism".

I hate the very beginning of Interloper, but it gets better once you're inside the factory and there's more walls and obstructions to hide behind to avoid enemy attacks. Shooting floating aliens with the hivehand is also pretty fun.

Day of Defeat and TFC were my childhood

I only bought HL 'cause it was cheap and I liked the box art but goddam did I make a good decision there

although I preferred the mods that came with it to the game itself, it was still one of the defining gaming moments of my life and I kinda hate how people go through stuff they like with an adult and more critical eye an list off shit they didnt even notice playing through it as a kid for reasons as to why a game is bad so im kinda scared to play through it again

I'd watch a show based on the adventures of Carmack and Romero

>“Come on, monkey fuck!” Romero screamed, pounding his fist on the
wall. “Who’s your fucking daddy? Let’s go!” Shawn checked his watch. It was
8:00 P.M. again. Holy shit! he thought. Another day wasted playing
deathmatch. The games with Romero were taking over everything–work time,
playtime, mealtime, bedtime. And now Romero was turning this into a de-
ranged sport, hurling insults like a trash-talking jock after school. The most
aggressive thing people usually did when they played video games was roll
their eyes. But Doom, Shawn realized, called for something more. After win-
ning the next round, he punched the wall back and screamed, “Eat that,
motherfucker!” Romero cackled approvingly. This was how games were meant
to be played.
The violent revelry was not limited to Romero. Office destruction was
even more a part of daily life. Keyboards smashed against tables. Old moni-
tors crashed into the floor. The influx of sample America Online disks and
computer sound cards ended up embedded like Chinese throwing stars in the
walls. One day even Carmack joined in the action.
This happened after Romero accidentally locked himself in his office.
Hearing the pleas, Carmack gave the knob a twist, paused, then deduced the
most obvious and immediate solution. “You know,” he said, “I do have a
battle-ax in my office.” Carmack had recently paid five thousand dollars for
the custom-made weapon–a razor-edged hatchet like something out of Dun-
geons and Dragons. As the other guys gathered around chanting, “Battle-ax!
Battle-ax! Battle-ax!” Carmack chopped Romero free. The splintered door re-
mained in the hall for months.

Never did play TF2. I was very close to playing it when it came out, but by that point I had generally decided to stop playing multiplayer games since I know how addicting it can be to play them all the time.
