The Eggplant Wizards aren't that hard to take care of.

Never go above their level. If you're above them when you enter a room, get to their level or below as fast as you can. After that it's just a matter of reading the arcs of the eggplants and avoiding them.

I think he's more referencing the terror of experience drain. Undead enemies in those games may be tough but really they're like all the other enemies i.e. dudes trying to hit you. In many old dnd inspired games however undead could make you go down entire experience levels. Fuck vampires in Ravenloft, fuck them, fuck, fuuckkk!

Undead in many of the old school CRPGs would utterly fuck up your party, not just because they were difficult, but because of their special attacks which would debilitate your characters and make them vulnerable to other enemies that were lurking about.

For example, in ADOM many undead will happily drain your stats (which is permanent). Others will make your character ill, which is like being poisoned except it halves your HP for the duration, gives you feverish fits and makes you choke on your own vomit if you become confused or paralyzed. And of course there are the upper class undead who summon hordes of the previous two.

In Sil, undead can drain your stats, slow you down and steal your nutrition.

Even in the 64 Zeldas, undead can paralyze you and rape your ass.
