To this day it cheeses me off that Portal Sonic not only stopped translating the old Sonic mangas but took all of their work down as well. Could never figure out why that happened.

Have any other groups attempted to do it, as well as translate the Dash & Spin manga?

After some search, I've found a Tumblr user has uploaded some of the missing translated Sonic manga: http://sonicthemanga.tumblr.com/tagged/sonic%20the%20hedgehog/chrono/

...but they had a break and have been gone for more than half a year.

Oh well. I guess the one thing I like about those comics is the various variations Sonic's spin attacks are given.

I LOVE that manga. It's basically the most accurate depiction of Sonic's world and its characters (at least the initial plans for it), and it doesn't take itself too seriously, just like the reference game.

Thank you SO much for posting the last chapter.

I hope they or somebody else uploads the rest of what Portal Sonic had translated. Among which is that weird-ass original backstory for Sonic about him being a mascot for a air force pilot who was pals with Chuck Yeager. Turns out after he died in an accident his cartoon hedgehog mascot Sonic sprung to life as a saviour of the world, what the hell.

http://info.sonicretro.org/Original_Story

The stories about Nikki have a variation on it, such that Sonic is a mysterious protector who once helped Nikki's father to land his out-of-control plane. It also got a callback in promotional content for Sonic Adventure 2, if I'm not mistaken.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Made for Nintendo Power and illustrated by Shotaro Ishinomori. Known for having an expy of Jet Link from Cyborg 009 and for it's very bittersweet ending.

>> No.2562670

>>2562623
I just re-read that today. It was warm-and-fuzzy nostalgic to hear the voices I assigned the characters back in the day come back out from the recesses from my mind. When it's collected in a single volume rather than spread out over 12 monthly issues, its poor pacing and lacking narrative become apparent, but it has some memorable moments. The art is beautiful, too.

In hindsight, it's interesting to see the fairy, Epheremelda, sharing many traits with Navi years before the latter's debut (she also shares qualities with Spryte from the American cartoon, and I honestly wonder if Ishinomori used her as a reference, whether or his own accord or with NOA's direction). Similarly, a Zora mask makes its debut years before being featured in actual video games.

It was also interesting to see a veteran manga author draw the comic in a left-to-right format; unless it was flipped and he compensated for this by drawing "natively" with Link holding the sword in his right hand. When I was a kid, I was completely ignorant of who Ishinomori was and it's kind of amazing that Nintendo Power sprung for such talent to produce an original comic for their little magazine, when they really didn't have to (even if the comics were a huge draw, they could've hired someone less established for less money rather than bring in a big name that very few readers would recognize).

I think Super Mario Adventures fared better in the format, since one was more gag-oriented and the other was attempting to tell an epic tale under constraints that didn't let it effectively do so. Still, it holds up well for what it is. I'm reminded of how much I yearned for Link's Awakening to be given the same treatment...

The first Zelda manga is pretty weird since it was made before much was known about the series.

Link is half-elf on his dads side and is Zelda's older half brother, though he looks younger than her because of his elf genes. He wears overralls and acts like a normal guy (aka wimpy and scared of danger). Elves face speciesism by the humans and Zelda's father would kill Link if he knew about him. Zelda still knows that Link is her brother but he doesn't and has a crush on her. It's a pretty gorey manga too.

Super Mario Adventures was cool, I remember a friend bringing the "Mario vs. Wario" story to elementary school once.

>> No.2563070

>>2562670
Also, when reading the graphic novel today (the 2015 reprint), I noticed a bar on the bottom of a few pages, namely the first pages of a chapter (the panels of which tended to extend beyond the 'border' most other pages did). I wondered what was that about; I had my suspicions but found the possibility hard to believe.

Sure enough, though, my suspicions were correct: the bars were editing out the "Nintendo Power" and "Volume 3X" footers from the original magazine print. Evidently, Nintendo's master copy of the comics have these footers embedded in them. It's not a big deal since they existed in white blank space on most pages and the sloppy editing really isn't distracting, it's just kind of surprising.

>>2563038
There were two "Mario Vs. Wario" comics, only one of which was printed with the graphic novel. Do you remember which one you saw? One was a Wario origin story of sorts (which I'd gladly accept as canon, though of course it is not; this was included in the book print), and the other involved M&W vying to give Peach the best gift ever.

I am surprised Pocket Monsters is still running after nearly 20 years. It has XY chapters apparently.

I'm confused how Sonic OVA bombed. From what I know it was supposed to be a full series but Japan is not into Sonic like North America or Europe. That's confusing since so many other series pass despite being unpopular. How'd it not even get a 1 cor anime? At worse they could have released it exclusively on VHS or made it western-only despite being Japanese made

>> No.2567071

>>2567009
>or made it western-only

The best thing about the OVA was that it shed a light on how characters in the series were actually supposed to act and feel, without western Archie writers adlibbing some edgy backstory and all. It would have ruined everything leaving it western-only because there was a whole other concept for Sonic in the US (the OVA was also midly censored), also I don't think Sonic fits well as a series. That said, Sonic X was actually alright but I'm glad it ended.
