The majority of the hype comes from rather it's ability to play multiple systems at once, and upscale them via hdmi rather than it being of decent quality due to it technically emulating since it rips the rom from a cart. plays it like an emulator, and give poor results, or at the very least give results that some may say doesn't live up to the price. It's decent for convenience and space, but the emulation can be meh, and as does the compatibility.

No joke, I have a friend who's wife "strongly encouraged" him to get a Retron. He spent hours updating it just so it would play Actraiser. He didn't seem even vaguely happy about any of it.

There's really not much real hype, they just came and tried to viral it on here for the longest time and nobody bought into it.

It's kind of like when G2 tried to desperately viral the R.I.P bullet on /k/, since a lot of people on there have a basic grasp on ballistics, they see that it's actually a really awful bullet and that it performs worse than any regular FMJ. As a comparison, a R.I.P (a very expensive hollowpoint machined out of solid copper) loading of 9mm Luger performs more or less like a ball loading of .32 Auto, a remarkable step down in terminal ballistics, they charged a lot of money for them too.

I can't tell you the sheer amount of enjoyment you can gleam from this beast.
