Ultima, Wizardry, the Gold Box games, Eye of the Beholder, etc.

RPGs started going downhill when they all wanted to be like goddamn Final Fantasy/DQ.

There are some exceptoins. I'm currently playing Serpent in the Staglands. It's an awesome baldur's gate inspired game. Came out just recently. Nice Pixel-Art-Graphics too.

Baldur's Gate is a post-downhill RPG. Hate when people put that up as some sort of high water mark for PC RPGs.

Yeah visually it's kind of drab. But visuals are the first thing that stops mattering once you really get into a game. Especially one that's like 200 hours long.

well I hate then people put fallout or planescape trash as high water mark for rpgs

although they were released about the same time as baldurs gate and are much less enjoyable

This is the game that made me finally buy a HDD for my Amiga 500.
Too bad they didn't port parts 4 and 5 over, since those used same game engine. One day I'll go back and play part 2...

I have been playing WoX for a month or two and it is pretty great. Should I go backward or forward in the series when I am done? I like old Wizardry games so low tech/high difficulty is not unacceptable.

Star Ocean: The Second Story, for sure. Best RPG on the ps1 imo. If I was to choose for PC, it'd probably be M&M3, though there's probably something else I'm forgetting. Too tired.

Just play the Thalion games that preceeded it: Dragonfligh, Amberstar, Ambermoon. Only one of them was released in DOS, the others were for Amiga and Atari ST. Since Thalion released them for free on their website, they'll always be free forever. Also they made some other nice games too (Lionheart is my favorite platformer of all time!)
