2564960 No.2564960 [Reply] [Original]

So I just realised I have like 4 VMUs, but I've never really used them for anything other than memory cards.

What kinda cool shit can you do with VMUs? I know there was some kinda Chao minigame or something, but what's the coolest shit they do, or just neat things about them in general?

>> No.2564983 [DELETED]

You can make them skip a few times over water.

>>2564983
10/10, could you use them as ammunition too?

>> No.2564987

With a slingshot I guess. I don't think they blow up all that good.

>>2564987
Huh, I wonder if someones ever put a gameboy micro in one of these, that'd be pretty cool

They are great for annoying neighbours if you live in a flat and you boot up a DC with a VMU inserted that has dead batteries.

>> No.2565000

I remember buying some green ones for like 2$ a piece when the dc was going under.

The batteries were worth more at that point.

Well sir,

you may have four VMUs

but, conversely, I

have four PS4s

The coolest thing to do would be programming for them. But whatever you do, battery will run out fast.

>> No.2565107

None of the VMU games I tried caught my attention, but I had a lot of fun making mini-interactive movies for it (on my computer, sent to the DC using email). I made an Outrun-inspired "racer" with a flying saucer, which was actually closer to Road Avenger's gameplay than anything Outrun (press buttons on time to not fail).

>> No.2565179

Power Stone 1 mini-games were fun and the best ones I played. There was also a Chao Editor to make chao(as chao adventure to raise chao if you wanted to). Games like Soul Calibur had some character animation on the vmu while playing the game. Some games had maps or ammo info on the vmu. Skies of Arcadia also had some minigame to get items and other shit. I think in Virtua Tennis you could see your play on the vmu. Games like SA2 or Shenmue 2 had a sprite slideshow with the characters

There are more things, official or fanmade, just google and try them. There was an iso full of that shit and savefiles

Load on some homebrew and convince some crusty hipster that it's a prototype for the DMG micro.

Check out homebrew stuff. There's a decent selection on Blue Swirl. I personally haven't bothered putting batteries in my VMUs for years though. They just chew through them too fast.

My little brother made it run game boy games by welding the GPU to the USB port. It goes without saying, he works for Nintendo.

I know there's at least a handful, I've seen scans and such on segaretro. Seemed to be in Hangul.

Also, I see HiSaturns and a This is cool!, but where's the V-Saturn? Disappointed in you, dude who reposted someone's picture from across the internet.

Not retro but that'd be kinda neat. If I remember correctly it'd be pretty easy as the micro's PCB is modular (module for CPU and screen, module for AB buttons and so on). I'll try to work out something similar once I'm back from vacation this august

iirc, it could be used like a digimon/tomigochi mini game with Sonic adventure letting you take care of those little creatures. In sonic adventure 2 they actually put it into the game, but I seem to recall SA1 it was on this damn thing.
