Any love for the old GTA games? For me it's GTA2>London>GTA1. They're all worth playing, though.

The only one of those I replay is 2. 1 and London feel thin in comparison.

GTA2 was awesome - really funny in a twisted way and the better tech, compared to part 1, helped to unleash its full potential.

The 1st is the game I played the most on PSX. I shitted my pants when I saw GTA 3. I played a lot also the 1st on GBC.

I dont like the futuristic world of the 2nd. Music and maps was also better in the 1st IMO.

GTA1/2 GBC are impressive as hell because they are unabridged versions of the games. All of the cities as well as all of the missions are crammed into the games.

They are not fun to play, though.

>> No.2550905

I played GTA2 so much as a child, finding the tanks, going on rampage, activating debug mode (teleport!)... and of course the missions were amazing, often more on the funnier side but that fit very well with the weird pseudo-futuristic-80s-neon-atmosphere.

Another amazing thing: modifying the car stats. After trying endlessly I found settings that would make the cars spin insanely fast when using the hand brake. Together with an indestructible car that was a fun ride!

I am surprised more people don't remember these. I'm 20 and loved the PS1 GTA when I was little. It's still the only GTA I have played. I remember being scared of the PS2 games but the PS1 one never seemed too mature despite all the violence.

>> No.2551035

>>2551027
People remember them fine, they're just massively overshadowed by the later GTA games.

I liked GTA, but the shooting and driving felt too imprecise; it's like playing an arcade game without levels or good enemy patterns. I feel like they wanted to encourage people to just play sandbox style, which most players responded to positively.

That's what I meant. I downloaded an ISO of GTA1 years ago and it was slow as shit. Turned out to be the PAL ISO.

To be fair, though, I read that DMA wasn't really proud of the PSX port of GTA1. GTA2, on the other hand, was built from the ground up and developed with the PC version.

>Honestly I think GTA2 looked amazing despite being semi-2D.

Me too. (Although I don't understand why you would say "despite being semi-2D", as if 2D or semi-2D games can't look good.) The lighting effects are great, the cars and textures look nice, the fire effects and whatnot look cool and everything plays very smoothly. Hell, even the gun sprites are awesome.

>> No.2554948

>>2554065

Probably the 3D iterations are easier because you can press a button to lock the aim at foes, it's easier to replenish your health/get a jacket and it's easier to get rid of a huge number of people using cheap ways like ramming them with a truck or exploding a vehicle near to them. You can do that in the 2D games, but it is a lot harder to get away as you don't have a running button and have to manually aim the whole time.

Rockstar re-released the 1st one at least as freeware about a decade back. The sweet thing about that deal is that they updated the engine to be natively Win XP compatible. That's the version you should try.

Yeah, love them for the unapologetic attitude, but not including a proper mid-game save feature for the first one was a massive bullshit move, that rendered the later cities nearly unbeatable, the brutal difficulty considering. GTA1 was one of the reasons why I learned reverse engineering and debugging, so I could create my own trainers for the sonowabitch.

back then it was heavily criticised for the 2D graphics which, according to some major review, were "almost identical to the first game" - absolute bullshit imho.

Especially the explosions were never as pretty as in GTA 2 again. Just look at those screen-filling car bomb fireballs! The later games really lacked that.
