It plays nothing like Real Bout though.
If anything it's much more similar to a Capcom fighter than anything, 3S in particular. Right down parryiing and the homogenized qcf x2 inputs for the majority of supers in the game.

Guy who was originally down on the game here. It was the mass of qcf x2 inputs and simple inputs for other commands that was part of what turned me off it as well. It's not a bad choice per se, but I had come from KoF and having to practice at a desperation move to be able to pull it out on the fly. It just felt a little dull for some reason. Besides that it was just being stuck with only 1on1 battles and the small roster of characters

Not him, but 4's camera in comparison to 3 is terrible. I feel like the camera in 4 deliberately goes out of its way so that you can never see where the hell you're going, even with the ability to rotate it. There's just too much junk in the background.

The PSP version (and the Dreamcast version it's based on) is an oddity. The analogy I like to use is that it's like if Super Mario All-Starts didn't actually have SMB1, SMB2, and LL, but instead just had SMB3 with the level layouts of the other 3 games thrown in. It tries to represent the whole series, but in the end doesn't. It woudl be better to eaither just emulate the original arcade ROMS, or if you really want a legitimate release, look into the Japan-exclusive PS2 Collection. To continue the above analogy, it is an actual Super Mario All-Stars, plus extras.

didn't the PS2 version have a slight lag? Or was it Resurrection?

My personal favorite version is Vampire Savior on Saturn. It's arcade perfect as far as I can tell, full animations, the only change I can notice is the sound, it sounds different, but not bad.
And it has all characters from all 3 games. I believe in the collections (or the arcade originals) you can only play Vampire Savior and Vampire Savior 2 which change characters, but neither has a full roster.

Anyway, the best thing to do if you want to play with other people is probably just emulate the arcade.

>> No.2558529

>>2558516
Sorry I deleted the first version of my post, it had too many typos in it. I've heard that the PS2 version does have some lag (and possibly some game speed inaccuracy), but in terms of content it still remains the most complete Darkstalkers release to date. It does have full roster versions of Savior, Savior 2, and Hunter 2 (full-roster Hunter 2 having some system tweaks to avoid being redundant with full-roster Savior 2, because originally they were exactly the same minus which characters were available). But yeah, for playing against other people, Fightcade is still probably the best choice for now. That or Resurrection.

Also, for novelty's sake, the PS2 version is the only release that legitimately lets you play as the boss characters in Darkstalkers 1. Although they might have been toned down slightly (at the very least it's confirmed that Huitzil's lasers do less chip damage).

I agree that Scias joining the party was a pretty odd thing. Camera things definetly agree on, minigames were kinda fun mostly.

You didn't find the insane difficulty spike when arriving at the emperor's tomb annoying?
Suddenly bosses literally one-shot you compared to previous ones that took maybe 80% of your HP in a single hit.
Not to mention they used Sanctuary so even buffing up would do nothing as it removed them.

Then you go to the final boss after 3 annoyingly hard dog bosses that one shot you and.. the final boss is the easiest piece of shit ever.
He doesn't one-shot you, he doesn't cancel buffs, I was even able to make my low level party faster than him after buffing up.

My main issue with BoF4 is the difficulty.
Early on it's way easy, late on it suddenly spikes for few bosses, yet the last boss is laughably easy. Sorry to derail the thread a bit!

The only issue I had with the PSP one (and same problem with SFA3) is, being a 6-button fast-paced fighting game on a handheld console, it felt umconfortable because the fast combos didn't translate well on the PSP. Is different if you compare it with SF2, which is more slow-paced.

Try running "mame -listroms dmnfrnt" (Linux) or the equivalent Windows command and comparing the roms listed there and their checksums with the roms you have (in both the game archive and the bios archive). That should tell you what the problem is.
