Okay guys, I'm starting my N64 collection. I tried to start collecting for PS1 and PS2 but I got kind of bored. I always loved N64 more.

What are the absolute essentials? Including peripherals, I guess. Rumble Pak/Expansion Pak right?

>> No.2550978

everything first party
everything by rare
everything by konami
everything by treasure
everything by factor 5

now go do some googling

>> No.2550983

I have over 40 N64 game but I don't own a rumble pak, yet I've never felt like I've had less than a full experience because of that.

You DO need a memory card, however.

for the most part, n64 was my first console. so i just started collecting games i played a lot as a kid. (minus Majora and Harvest Moon, which are a tad out of my price range right now) other than that, i just get games i think look cool, or just because n64 emulation is a shit. my plans now are to get an Everdrive for the rest of the library.

I've owned an N64 since back in the days and to be honest the idea of collecting games for it makes me cringe. There are about 10 amazing must have, but the rest have aged horribly and it seems it's just not worth it. I wouldn't invest much in the system, it's not like the NES and SNES with an almost limitless catalogue of awesome games. Most of awkward for fugly.

Just by anything with Zelda, Mario, Pokemon or Star Fox in it. Maybe Golden eye or Perfect dark for the lolz.

I have all the Rare games for the system, I was a big fan at the time, now I think they are shit. Turok is just plain awful, Doom will always be a PC game to me.

The only games I actually still play on the thing is Zelda, Mario Kart and Mario 64.

lack of accuracy isn't really the problem, especially when you would need a rediculously over powered computer to run a N64 emulator that is even remotely near fully accurate. It's more that most of the games are broken messes and the N64 emulation community is more concerned with internal drama than actually fixings bugs.

There are very few shovelwares in this machine. It was basically the 3D Neo Geo before the Dreamcast was released so just check its list of games to see what interest you

I still play Star Fox 64 nearly daily. Not kidding. I have a small crt beside my computer, with a n64 and only star fox, for the purpose of spending 5 minute windows of time beating levels between doing stuff. I've literally had this game on almost always for 10 years.

hijacking this thread to ask: do I give in and buy 3rd party n64 controllers? first party are just so flimsy. I feel like random 2015 repros can't be worse. I have at least 20 n64 controllers at this point and all of them have at least a few problems. they're as disposable as toilet paper.

N64 has games, but some are Jap only or really shitty.

buy one and see how far it gets you. If you like it, buy 3 more, if not, return it, sell it, burn it, whatever makes you happy.
Also, there are various online videos that can help you make your controllers slightly more usable.

Ok
This is off the top of my head.
No googling, or even looking at -my- collection.

Here we go:
>Mario 64
>Pilotwings 64
>Ogre battle 64
>Banjo Kazooie
>Banjo Tooie
>Perfect Dark
>Goldeneye 64
>Bomberman 64
>Bomberman Hero
>Blast Corps
>Chameleon Twist
>Chameleon Twist 2
>Super Smash Bros
>Mario Party
>Mario Party 2
>Mario Party 3
>Castlevania 64
>Shadowgate 64
>Turok
>Star Wars Shadows of the Empire
>Ocarina of Time
>Majoras Mask
>Donkey Kong 64
>Jet force gemini
>Doom 64
>Pokemon Stadium
>Pokemon Stadium 2
>Pokemon Snap
>Starfox 64
>Gauntlet Legends

And I'm running out.

Half the games I fucking listed are not that good. Honestly, the rare games aren't even that fun, Banjo and DK64 are actually atrociously boring.

It was never released outside Japan physically, though there's the VC release on Wii. I'd still reccommend playing the original on N64 simply due to the controls.
As for the language, the game's voice acting is originally all in english (with japanese subtitles).
The only probelm you might come through is that the game's options are all in japanese, so if you can't read katakana you might have some trouble setting the difficulty on hard, but nothing you can't figure out by trial and error I guess. As for the game, it's a pure action game, perfectly playable for anyone, whether they know english or japanese.

Pretty much
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6AYL5zHm0Q
Also, I was wrong about the menus, but the voice acting is in English so you're not missing the story.
If you want to cop an import of the game, beware that it can be stupid expensive since it's easy to play even without prior knowledge of Japanese.
