2548086 No.2548086 [Reply] [Original]

Ive been looking to expand my console collection.

I was looking for a console that isnt part of the majority and that wasnt going to break the bank either. Looking at the SNES just turns me off seeing the prices of some of these games.

I just want to buy the game so I can enjoy it, im not trying to make absurd future investments. Do you guys have any suggestions for good systems whose games havent fallen to reseller scum?

>pic related, thats where my brain was headed

Tiger Electronic games.

They probably wont help your hipster status or nerd cred much though. You'll need a CDI, TG16, NeoGeo, etc for that. All pretty pricy.

>> No.2548104

Genesis is alright I think. Also 2600 is nice and cheap now. Still both are sorta popular, definitely not as much as the SNES though

tiger games arent really consoles

im not trying to get nerd cred, if i was id be posting this on reddit. TG16 ive seen for around 60~ which could be a lot worse

>>2548104
Genesis/SMS has been my main area for a while, although im noticing prices starting to rise. I remember CIB ranger-x being like 5 bucks.

Ill look into the 2600 though, but I was looking for something that didnt have too many games ported over.

The consoles aren't too terrible priced BUT one with original hook ups is generally rare. Good games start pretty high though and only go crazy from there. Bonks adventure starts at like $30 for just the card.
Mods for the TG16 aren't super difficult but are more difficult then RGB mods for like a N64.
Turbo CD is stupid prices all around form consoles to the games.

i am yes, located in the US, i know pc was more popular over in europe. I guess there is no good answer for this topic, although 2600 is looking easy on my wallet and i hear the controllers are swappable with genesis so im leaning towards that.

Genesis, easier to find the clam shell cases than the boxes with SNES games.

im pretty set on the Genesis, it was my main console along with SMS when I was growing up. I think I have every game I could possibly ever want for it.

Are NES games beyond over priced too or just stuff like Mega Man, Castlevania etc ?

I don't like the idea of collecting Nintendo stuff because it's so expensive to get stuff with their cases and manuals. Specially when it comes to RPGs.

PS2 is excellent right now, consoles are cheap, games are flat rate prices, hell everywhere I go I never see a game go for more than £5 and that's for the quite rare ones, I know some of the really rare ones will be worth more, but you could probably spend a good £300 now and have over £600 worth of gear in 10 - 20 years time

Get the Super Famicom.

Get all the classics for a fraction of their SNES-counterpart's price.

As long as you're not looking for an RPG, there is little to no language barrier on most games.

i have plenty of ps2 games, still pick them up but i was trying to stick to board centric consoles. But yeah PS2 has plummeted, ive seen a lot of good stuff at a dollar a game

>>2548453
i didnt think about that, i know the snes had a lot of good rpgs but i dont have time in my life for those types of games anymore. Ive had a lot of good luck with japanese genesis imports since theyre also cheaper

Thanks anon, i will look into it.

Best systems to buy for are last gen honestly.

Honestly, in terms of volume the single best bang for your buck console is probably an old 80 gig fat PS3.

You get like 80-90% compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games, and the entire PS3 library. The libraries are fucking huge and diverse. PS1 and PS2 games are fairly cheap, but obviously the big name games are pretty expensive, but if you don't care about physical copies you can buy them on the PSN for 5-10 bucks.

So right now PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 games are fucking low priced. I bought the following 3 games sealed when I did an order from ebgames.ca

>Lost Planet 3 - 9.99
>Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands - 7.95
>Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z - 5.99

Maybe not the best games, but still, pretty damn cheap for sealed games that are fairly new.

Eb and gamestop probably won't do it this console gen (due to their new, taking retro marketing), but in a year or two pay attention, they will most likely be offloading a shitload of their previous gen stock to make room for the Wii-U Xbone and PS4 stock. I picked up a lot of amazing PS1/PS2 games for peanuts when they offloaded all their stock. I got the entire megaman legends series for like 30 bucks (incl. tron bonne). Of my ~95 PS1 games I probably bought 40 of them from those sales.

If you're talking strictly retro, then you can still find good, lesser known games on NES and SNES, but in general the good, well known games are going to be expensive. Faxanadu is a great game on NES and its common to find for 5-10 bucks.

The problem is that people are getting more aware of what they have, so people are asking higher prices, and as demand increases while the supply remains stagnant it remains a sellers market.

I would recommend you just pick your favorite system and go for it.

>>2548487
Worth adding is that the HD: Remasters and Re-releases are really good bang for your buck.

>God of War Saga
>5 decent games
>15-20 bucks

>Prince of Persia Trilogy
>Metal Gear Solid Trilogy
>Devil May Cry Trilogy
>Shadow of the Colossus and Ico
>Ratchet and Clank collection
>Silent Hill Collection

There are so many. I know this is a retro board, but honestly, you get so much more bang for your buck on the PS3. Original Xbox is really untapped as well, mostly because it wasn't popular but it has some really good games. Dino Crisis 3, Voodoo Vince, Gun valkyrie, Blinx, Ninja Gaiden (also on PS3 as Ninja Gaiden Sigma), Shenmue (lollolol this is getting raped), Steel battalion (probably one of the coolest games ever made), Jet Set Radio Future, etc.

thats what I basically did with the Genesis/SMS but ive gotten every game I think Id ever want for it so I was just looking into what else was out there. Im considering the famicom like another anon mention just to get cheaper japanese cartridges.

Yes and no. There's barely anything good so you can get all the things you're interested in fairly cheaply. I got the 20 or so PS3 games I was interested in for under $100. Now I don't have to buy any more. 360 is pointless and the Wii is easy to pirate for.

I'm not saying you're wrong but if there were things for any of the systems you were interested in at one point it's incredibly cheap now to buy for it.

I agree about the wii though. I bought a complete one for $20 and I think I spent more time downloading games for it than I did actually playing any of them.

You guys sure sound like you like video games.

>DLC
Completely optional. I agree on disc DLC is scummy, but at the same time, out of all the PS3 games i own, I've only bought the DLC for Dark Souls, and I have like 100 games for it.

>DRM
maybe on PC, or if you're buying an Ubisoft game, but I have very few games that are online only or require sign in. And lets be really fucking honest, we have internet with pretty much 100% uptime, so must be online to play is really, really fucking irrelevant.

i think being online is a big thing. Its just the idea of it, we are all online but its the principle of the fact. We shouldnt have to be online, especially if youre not using online features.
I remember when I moved back home and didnt have internet I couldnt even play any Steam games. Which is fucked up cause for some reason I was able to use Origin of all things.

Anyway im a little fucked up so im rambling but i can plug my genesis in right now and i dont have to anything more than hit start and im good to go. I shouldnt have to jump through fucking hoops to play a game I own. The 360 has this problem too, if youre not connected you cant even access parts of library. I dont know if theres any work arounds for these things but I shouldnt have to workaround in the first place.

I only collect for SNES/SFC and GB/GBC, as I already had many of the harder to get games from when I was young. N64 is gonna get an everdrive someday, NES as well.

not retro, GBA and NDS have had flashcarts for years.
