Half-Life

The level design is linear enough to make the gameplay feel quick and streamlined without boring backtracking, but there's still enough non-linear design to make you feel like you're in an actual place that you're free to explore and not some bullshit videogame level.

Modern shooters tend to be super linear (especially any game like CoD) and shooters older than Half-Life tend to have too much boring key hunting and confusing maze levels.
