So what's the ideal way to hook up a Saturn to a TV?

>> No.2533652

>>2533647
Most games were made with composite in mind, since that's what they sold the Saturns with in Japan. Europe got RGB Scart though, which caused a public outcry since not enough TV sets had them at the time (some units actually had a huge sticker on their box saying "RF Connector included!").

RGB is better, but honestly not that much. The colours are a LITTLE bit sharper technically, but you can only tell the difference if you specifically compare the two and look for differences.

That, plus you have other problems getting RGB hooked up: NTSC TVs don't have SCART sockets, NTSC Saturns don't work with PAL cables due to the a/v out being wired differently, so you'll need third party cables, but third party cables are usually poor quality and you'll get buzzing audio...

FF3 doesn't need a ram cart it just says it does everywhere on the internet for some reason. Thats the main reason it's a pretty average port. I tried troubleshooting this today. Played for quite awhile and thought the problem must have fixed itself before it happened again. I noticed that when I reset the Saturn the problem was still there on the saturn logo etc.I am running the demo screen of Darius Gaiden seeing if this is something that has just recently happened to my saturn, nothing yet.

Theres reduced animation compared to the mvs/aes original but the ram cart has no effect in improving it. I think the first KOF saturn port was the first snk game to have a ram cart (although its one that only works with that game) then the later games had a 1 meg ram cart that worked across snk saturn titles (Metal Slug, FF Real Bout, KOF 99). Capcom fighters beyond a certain point used the 4 meg ram cart which was either optional or req.

Beyond that there's some great racing games. Initial D, Daytona, Sega Rally, Outrun. Sega Ages are all great.

You seem to like RPGs so it's worth it to mention Shining Force, Shining Wisdom, Shining the Holy Ark, Albert Odyssey. If you read moon, there's also Lunar, Black/Matrix, Devil Summoner/Soul Hackers, Sakura Taisen, and a bunch of Weeb visual novel shit. Some wizardry ports of varying quality....

How are the shipping prices there? Assuming you are getting an actual Saturn, the shipping price for that would end up costing more than what you are paying for the actual unit.

Also Super Robot Taisen is worth 1$ at most, it's an insanely common title. I think I still have 2-3 copies of both, I'll send you one if you want. But I need to check their cases first, they are probably broken. They use these shitty medium cases that are slightly thicker than a normal jewel case, and they are impossible to get replacements for.
In fact replacing broken medium cases is the only damn use for Super Robot Taisen on the Saturn (and is the reason why all my copies I are most likely broken, I exchanged their cases with other games that needed them).

It's not a bad game, but I personally just can't get into it at all. Something about it feels bad while I'm playing it, and I'm not sure what. Maybe it's the camera, or the framerate, or maybe it's just me.

It kinda sucks since it's pretty neat but I guess it's just not for me. At least the password system is cool, I like that you can play as the other guys while that awesome music plays. I just wish I wanted to play it again in the first place so I could actually enjoy that.

Ditch the st-key, get a modchip, get a spindle of blank discs. You can region patch the games before burning them, so st-key is not necessary.

Only the post-1997 Saturns need two wires, and only for modchips that do not have an onboard 8MHz clock (like the turd that racketboy sells).

Your bigger problem is that the machine is 20-pin. But, the phantom and v3 chips are both compatible with 20pin drives, in fact, the phantom won't even need to be jumpered for the 20pin drives.

No, this thing is worse than that. It uses a PCB as thin as a ribbon cable, you fart on it from the wrong direction and it will physically break. All the other chips use a PCB with normal thickness, which are tons more resilient.

model 1 with VA1 motherboard.
V3 and Phantom chip will only need a power cable soldered, and the jumpers must be not-soldered (so if they are connected, you have to remove the solder from the jumper pads). But the chips usually come with the jumper pads being non-connected, so no worries about that.

>It still works though, so what are you contesting here?

Put it in a skeleton Saturn (or any machine that has the white paint on the edge of the drive), and it won't work, unless you solder extra wires to the IC pins.

Put it in a Saturn with a 64pin drive and there's a 50/50 chance it will work, and even then it sometimes works buggy or will need an extra wire.

Put it in a 20pin Saturn and... you can't actually put it in a 20pin Saturn without doing a shitload of mods to the chip.

So with that you locked out all type of drives used in Saturns made in 1994, in 1995, the first half of 1996, all of 1997, and all of 1998. Unless you like modding your modchip.

Add to that the fact that the chips themselves break extremely easily, and last time I checked they cost $60 while all the other ones cost half of that at most (the phantom is $27 Canadian).

So why even bother ever suggesting the older chips, when you can get better ones for cheaper?

Funny thing is - the V3 is just the V2 in a different pcb, and the V2 was the "original" chip that the racketboy one cannibalized. Same exact schematics, just a different PCB, and many components missing to make the price lower. Typical Chinese design.

You even have the PCB marked up for the missing components which are still in the V2 chip.

Both of them have a system where you can pick up enemies and throw them, and using spells will allow defeated enemies to be able to combo off of others. It's amazingly cool in practice.

~1400 is the total amount of unique discs, but this is counting every disc of a multi-disc game separately. And then you have to subtract the ~300 games released in the US, if you want to get the number for unique games.

From the top of my head it's about 800 unique JP titles, but I might be completely wrong about the number, it's been a while since I calculated it. And most of the jp exclusives are stuff like Mahjong titles are visual novels.
You can still find tons of great titles, but there aren't that many as the number would suggest.

I prefer Boomerang simply because it has better graphics, and because you can punch enemy bullets (and enemies). It's hilarious to abuse that; for one of the bosses, the safest tactic is just flying up to his face and punching him repeatedly. You can still use button commands for combos in Boomerang too by the way, you even have more of them, and you can do the fire special attack at will.
The game is just simpler and more action packed.

And Cotton 2 comes in a fucking medium case too, Boomerang does not.

I love bullet hell games, but I've never heard of Radiant Silvergun. It's way out of my price range so I'll definitley emulate it.

I played Sega Rally's sequel on the Dreamcast and had a lot of fun with it, definitely going to pick that up. I do love Daytona USA, though. All in all, great list. Thanks for all the reccomendations.

Damn, that's a surprise. It's one of the most popular vertical shmups ever made.
It's pretty different from a lot of other shooters in terms of both presentation and gameplay, but it's still quite fun.

It is? Well that's embarrassing. I'm not particularly well-versed in shmups considering I've just gotten into them, but I still like them a lot. I look forward to giving Radiant Silvergun a go, it looks wicked fun.

That's because they are awful (they use rubber membranes, same as a normal gamepad), plus they are huge so shipping costs a lot. Nobody wants them.

Into mechs? Assault Suit Leynos 2, Shienryu, and Bulk Slash are pretty cool, though not exactly unknown, really. Depends on how deep you've plunged into the system. Gundam Side Story's also great. Initial D and Lupin III: Sage of the Pyramid are fun if you're into those shows.

If you are in Europe, JP units are more expensive due to import prices.

It is very easy to mod PAL units though.

I was finally ready to drop the cash on a copy. Finally ready. For the longest time I've seen them listed for $160-$170 with actual pictures but I couldn't do it at the time. The one I was looking at sold and now the only ones listed with actual pictures are over $200.
