Are there any 8 or 16 bit characters with bright blonde hair in their pixel sprite?

I was just thinking about how Princess Toadstool (Peach) and Link began with dark hair. It wasn't until characters went into 3d did you see bright blonde hair start popping up.

If you look at the original Mario Kart, Princess Toadstool's hair color could be considered brownish blonde. It seems to me that darker hair was a stylistic choice since it looked better due to the limitations of the 8 and 16 bit hardware. Bright yellow hair just doesn't look good on those old school pixel sprites.

I can't find any actual concept art from the first SMB, but in the cover she had brown hair, then on the anime adaptation they set her final appearance with blonde hair and that carried into later concept art/games. I don't think it's a stylistic choice as much as a color contrast issue. Same for pink hair Link (Zelda 1/2 Link had brown hair in reference material, while ALttP Link became blonde).

Well, the NES' color palette has no true yellow, the closest thing available is orange
No such limitation on the SNES though. Maybe blonde hair just wasn't very hip during that time?

In some cases the platform can make a difference. This is Astro Marine Corps on Amstrad CPC.
The C64 and ZX Spectrum colors aren't as bright and vivid. For some reason the Amiga port has darker hair though.

You know when you're just looking at retro adventure game screens then you find one and say "Damn, that's some fine background". Well this is it. Is this game available on DOS? The 320x200 outline tells me so. Can you tell me more about the game?

The same is true if you look at her artwork. It wasn't consistent, but her hair was often presented as dirty blonder or strawberry blonde. It certainly wasn't bright YELLOW as it is now.

>Bright yellow hair just doesn't look good on those old school pixel sprites.

It doesn't look good on anything, to be honest.

The same could be said of Link; in LTTP artwork his hair was neither brown nor "yellow" blonde, but something in between. Why pink of all things was used is a mystery for the ages, since palette limitations certainly wasn't the reason.

You're in luck because there seems to be a DOS port. The graphics are pretty close too (Amiga version has slightly more detail).

I haven't played it so dunno about the story, but the screens sure look nice.

It would be cool if scummvm could run this game, but I don't see it listed anywhere.

Doesn't matter, I grew out of ScummVM anyway and only use DOSBox when I have to play something DOS related.

The graphics for this game are really odd though. They're dithered like its Amiga counterpart but they don't seem to use the standard EGA palette, and if they're not using EGA why the heck would you leave the dithering or make the Amiga version look better and have twice the colors?

I mean, it could be the first EGA game I've seen to push the hardware to its limits and that's a really cool feat in itself, but I wanted the graphics to look like the Amiga version. I'm really tented in reinstalling WinUAE but I don't have the ROMs anymore and I don't even think I'll be able to find this game :(

It's kind of weird because the "Conversion" page on HOL says that that DOS version runs in VGA rather than EGA. But I dunno any of the technical details about the various EGA/VGA modes.

Anyway if you want to try the Amiga version you probably just need the Kickstart 1.3 ROM. That's pretty easy to find with google.

OTOH, the game spans 6 floppies, so would be better to install it to HD first. That means you'll also need to download Workbench 1.3 and make a HD image. A bit more work than just running the other version in dosbox. If you want to go through all that trouble, you can easily find the floppies via this search engine:
http://www.oldgamesfinder.com/
Make sure to search for "Amiga Games (ADF)" because the "HD" stuff is normally WHDL stuff (aka WHDload, a stupid shareware program that requires a key).

Thank you, whenever I have the time I'll try to run the Amiga version. I have yet to start the DOS version because I had some setting up to do.

I don't really think it's VGA though, just some kind of advanced (perhaps undocumented?) EGA mode.

Welp, it's just an enhanced VGA mode, as opposed to an EGA like VGA mode which just uses the regular 16 colors.

It's also in 320x200, no undocumented screen modes or whatever. It's okay I guess. Many EGA games should've supported VGA this way.

His hair was made pink to make the sprite 'pop' and so the colours didn't blend with dungeons and stuff, ensuring you always know where you are. If you play a hacked version with the colour normalized you can see where they were coming from.

In that case, why did they make a relatively small part of the body pink and the majority of the sprite green? How would yellow hair not have stood out against the backgrounds?
