So First Queen: The New World performs really well on Windows 7, probably because Kure Eiji coded it mostly in software. The install shield has a cheesy FMV inset, lol. AppLocale's easy to set up on Win7, too, but I'm still having issues getting Wander Wonder to play right.

I tried using this guide: http://fullmotionvideo.free.fr/pc98/articles/cd/cd.html
But the links to some critical files are dead (ANECDXNT.E86, CDX.SYS , MSCDEX.EXE), and I can't seem to find them anywhere else. Hate to be a beggar, but if anyone knows where the files would be, a better guide to boot CDs, or even the CD boot fdi, I would be grateful.

When YU-NO was finally translated and posted on /vr/, I eagerly downloaded it and started playing. The feeling I got experiencing that game for the first time was orgasmic; couldn't even begin to describe to you how nice everything was visually with the pixel detail, and the chiptune was beautiful -- felt unique in a sense.

The story tying with the game was absolutely crazy with that fucking theory of how time progresses and all that, completely nuts.

Warroid is really fun at the base X1 clock speed. Faux-sprites move around smoothly, it feels great to jump and shoot, and there's small touches here and there which should make PvP fun to try.

Also tried Plazma Line...it's not as immediately accessible like Warroid, but there's more strategy involved with viewing the radars and keeping the ship in one piece. It's a tape game, but I got it working just fine.

Some tracks for Es no Houteishiki were posted in one thread header, the one before the last I think, and I liked it so I looked up the composer behind it but the only thing I could find was Garage Land. Any info on this?
I think I read it was an Australian group which was odd. I think it is note worthy that the style sounds similar to Remember11's, composed by Takeshi Abo.

Hey guys, I need help finding a game I've played before. I'm almost certain it was a PC-98 or FM-Towns game, let me describe it to the best of my abilities.

It had an isometric art style, similar to games like Lunatic Dawn II (pic related) and Mercury: The Prime Master. The thing I remember most distinctly is that when the map ends, in that space would be an open book. Like the game took place "on" a book. The art style was dithered, with window styled menus. As far as I remember the game was never translated into English.

I dream of them someday being released in English. The remakes of his games are some of the few remakes that actually look as good as the originals.

>>2403426
As someone who can read only very basic Japanese sentences, I can only recommend titles that have been translated, so...

Rance 3 - Awesome story and music but suffers from very basic gameplay. Luckily it's not a very hard game.

Rance 4 - Amazing setting and great art. Story is tons of fun and cutscenes have cool sprite animation. Gameplay suffers the same as the previous game.

Toushin Toshi - Recommended mostly for historical value. Gameplay suffers from insane random encounter rate.

Toushin Toshi 2 - Fixes all the problems of the first game with a great story and fun gameplay. Graphics are top-notch and the main heroine is awesome.

The next two weren't originally released in English using the PC-98 art and music but you can play them with those intact at http://tss.asenheim.org/ The day this site goes down will be a great loss.

Eve Burst Error - A masterpiece that has some of Umemoto's best music. The start of the game can be a little slow and tends to have to switch perspectives at annoying moments but the investment is worth it.

Desire - Another great game from Kanno and shares some similarities with YU-NO. Great music and story. Biggest problem is the useless side route for Makoto.

YU-NO - My favorite game ever. Everything is amazing about this game. Some may find the final part of the game is rushed, though.

Amy's Fantasies - Mostly recommended for the great art as the story is nothing special.

Nocturnal Illusion - A very cool game with lovely music and story. The traditional system can get a bit annoying at times.

Thanks also mate, I'll check out some Telenet, KOEI and Hokusho games to see if I come up with it. Don't stress about it if you can't find it.

The game definitely took place on a book though, and the art was heavily dithered, unlike Kaze no Tansa. It also definitely was not a Falcom game.

>>2401319
More Falcom stuff will do the trick, followed by games from Glodia, Riverhill Soft, the more well-known eroge titles (like Isaku), and maybe some ASCII stuff too. There's plenty to be done for other systems, too, especially the MSX and X68k which have plenty of documentation.

Try Hamlet for PC-98 developed by Panther Software. It got a PSX remake called Space Griffon, in case you know it.
It's a dungeon-crawler/rogue-like rpg in first person view with a sort of a real-time battle system.

I found the atmosphere pretty similar to Alien, since you have to explore a lunar facility the same way the crew in Alien had to walk around Nostromo and the like. Plus you get to ride a mecha and see some neat pixel art.
8 floppy disks (which can be installed into a hdd) of pure awesomeness.

Apparently OBS recording bitrates are more dependent on pixel change/delta than in other suites? It would explain why this WebM, originally 48 seconds, got cut off at ~28 with a 3MB file size. Oh well. I also need to know if all X68k emulators have issues recognizing more than a few inputs simultaneously, or if that's inherent to the original hardware.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryu_Umemoto

This was included from the very first draft, done by good 'ol JaggedEdge (who did the Wiki stuff on Arsys games like Star Cruiser). It just seems totally wrong. Artdink has a Rolodex of musicians they like to collaborate with, Ryuji Nishida and Osamu Yoshida (http://www2.ocn.ne.jp/~bonco/osamu.htm)) most recently. Umemoto establishing their in-house sound team, which I presume isn't doing the music, isn't off-limits, but the possibility's unfounded IMO.

Hex editor, specifically MadEdit-mod, the text resides within POS.EXE and POSM.EXE...which would make things a challenge since you'll be limited by the length of the original string unless you can re-organize the text elsewhere.

No clue on the pointers yet but looks like the strings are terminated with the standard 00 hex byte though 2A might have something to do with it as well. Like maybe for each new chunk of text 2A specifies where it starts and just keeps grabbing until it hits the next one and 00 works like a line break.

>>2421002
Just might be, but it all depends, like if someone or a group could figure out how the game works, all the branching paths, extract the game's images, music, sounds, and of course text they could then just put that into a brand new game. Bonuses for that is no need for a PC-98 emulator, it could be ported to other systems, and would make it easy for any further translations.

So I got around to looking though the game files, as you said the .EXE holds the menus and some sequences like the opening.

The games actual dialog is held in the .MSD files, and luckily for us, this makes things extremely simple, these are literally just .txt files. There is no character limit, so importing the translation into the game would be very quick. The only thing that might take some time is figuring out code for things like text color, tabs, changing character names, etc.

So yeah, find someone who is willing to translate over 100+ pages of text into English and its easy street from there.

Adding onto this, looks like POS.EXE holds the strings for the interactive menu. It too and handle half-width characters thankfully. Still trying to find where character names are being stored, ran a "find in files" with MadEdit for アリサ and that's how I found the stuff for the interactive menu.

Could probably write up a decent txt document with the information gathered, that or make a new entry on Romhacking's wiki.

Just looked into those, they are nearly identical to their .MSD counterparts with some formatting differences.

I honestly cant say for sure, but i would guess they are leftovers from and earlier build of the game due to their lack of formatting characters.

Update on this, found the names stored in POS.EXE, looks like it won't accept half-width characters as it still tries to read the values as if it were full-width. Thankfully however it looks like there's some flexibility as the names are separated by just full-width spaces. Looks like they start at 0xA122 if anyone else wants to play around with'em.

I have a question. What killed computer gaming in Japan? I'm aware that before the Famicom launched, computers were the go-to platform for games, and console gaming was almost nonexistent at that point. Even with the Famicom and Super Famicom taking over the Japanese market place, computer gaming still seemed to be a viable market, as several console games were computer ports. Then the Playstation came along, and it seemed like it killed computer gaming in one fell swoop. Is this correct? Or would Japanese computers still being largely proprietary (unlike a standard like say Windows) have been their death knell?

By contrast, computer gaming has still been relevant in the west, as during the PlayStation days, computers got several big name titles like Quake or Duke 3D. In fact, it still remains popular today in the west, so I'd like to know the ecology. Was Windows responsible for the longevity of computer gaming in the west, while proprietary computers like the FM Towns or NEC 88 are what alienated the market? Or would assuming that the Playstation killed it be the easiest, and most accurate, answer?

It wasn't killed, and I'm not sure if it was even weakened. They still make lots of games, which have been popular enough to spawn successful, high-end anime adaptations like Clannad, Steins;Gate and Fate/stay night. And then there's Touhou.

The PC-88 launched in 1981, and the Famicom in 1983. In 1981, computer games were just getting started as an industry and were very niche compared to console games, even in America. As per the HG101 article, PCs in general were less popular in Japan than they were here, and I think Japanese PC games never got very big the way they did here.

Japanese PCs were replaced by Wintel systems, but non-Wintel systems in the West, such as the Amiga, were also replaced around the same time.

So ironically, the thing that killed PC gaming in Japan was the thing that strengthened it in the west; Windows. I do wonder, though, how things would have been different if the Japanese made their games to be sold outside Japan as well. It worked well for console games, and it could be assumed that Japanese Windows gaming would've been sustainable if they released them stateside as well, where the biggest market for PC games was.

>> No.2427739

I like to think Japanese PC culture and continued development/publishing happened because of the 1970/1980s economic boom and need to play games at home. The second golden age (first concluded around the turn of the 1990s) ended due to the bubble popping, Wintel invasions supported by IBM's DOS/V format allowing Windows 3.1 machines to display Japanese, and finally Windows 95 and the baggage that brought in. Things scrambled the situation up like new paradigms for developers to adapt to (Visual Basic, polygon-supporting GPUs, DirectX, &c.), evolving P2P networks, and competition from import PC games (which no longer were hampered by different architectures, such that diehards could order from overseas and play Diablo). Maybe J-PC developers preferred working for and supporting platforms built with fixed specs, explaining why they switched to Sony, SEGA, and Nintendo (having official developer libraries/tools ready to go would also have attracted). Ultimately the perks that devs and pubs would have been receiving from NEC, Sharp, and Fujitsu were now ending, meaning that anyone dependent on them would either have found a new semi-patron, called it quits, or perhaps found some way to survive (Falcom) and even thrive (Bothtec).

Not all of the non-eroge Japanese PC studios disbanded or jumped ship (let alone went bankrupt), but those who stuck with PC focused on genres that you couldn't easily play on consoles, wargames in particular (even Falcom did one called Vantage Master). Trends from the late J-PC era, like sci-fi fleet strategy and visual novels, remained in vogue, while a short-lived multimedia fad was happening mainly on Windows 3.1 and Mac. Online gaming manifested primarily via browser/Java apps like Life Storm; older games were remade by devs/pubs as respites from inactivity or market ambivalence, knowing that some of the old fans had upgraded and would gladly double-dip. J-PC gaming hasn't fully died, but you could say it entered a coma.

Microsoft made a pretty big commitment trying to make sure DOS games ran on Windows, they put a small team to make sure every Maxis game ran on 95 (if you have time, you should read some of the hacks that team had to use) and Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington borrowed the source code from id Software to get Doom over to Windows. So the transition from DOS to Windows went pretty smoothly.
The Japanese didn't have the same outreach from Microsoft, so when Windows killed NEC and Fujitsu computers, you were forced to start from square one whether you went with consoles or Windows. I don't want to say game developers switched to consoles due to Xenophobia, but I think most developers wanted to make sure they were working with a native company who could provide quick support, and weren't forced to contact people across the Pacific ocean for support. Heck, most western developers stuck to the PC for similar reasons, Nintendo and Sega just couldn't provide the same support a native company like Microsoft could.

>> No.2427786

>>2427768
That's pretty interesting, actually. The west had a unified system like DOS before Windows took off, and the DOS to Windows transition went smoothly. The Japanese, on the other hand, may as well have been using commodore 64s or ZX Spectrums or Tandy 1000s or Coleco Adams, all wildly different machines that provided no standard. If Japan adopted DOS as early as the westerners did, maybe things would've been different?

At least nowadays, it looks like the Japanese are finally warming up to Windows, at least due to the overseas market having a third for exciting console games. Indeed, Dark Souls sold exceptionally well on PC, and I always did imagine DaS as a computer game of old, a spiritual successor to those old computer RPGs. Now the fact that their ports barely work is worrying, but that's beside the point.

>> No.2429630

>>2427768
Just for clarification: you can get a PC-9821 for the best of both worlds, since it can play PC-98 games using the 86 sound board and load both Windows and MS-DOS. Thing is, some games first made for earlier PC-98 models don't work or have issues no matter what, not sure how bad it can get with older Western DOS games. MS-DOS was commonly used even on Japanese PCs, so it's more an issue of how Microsoft and NEC respectively handled backwards compatibility for Wintel and PC-9821 machines.

Meanwhile, 68k-based personal computing basically ended around Windows 95's debut, and Fujitsu never updated the FM Towns like NEC did for their platform (though I think you can at least run Windows 3.1 on an FM Towns).

Also, I've become addicted to Trails in the Sky FC over the past couple of days. Gotta juggle this, Relics, and Thunder Force it seems. I'll be over with at least two of them soon!

Their PC culture started developing right around the same time-frame; I think mainframe usage was different and had to catch up big time after the occupation ended. When you rely on machine translation (as per >>2404378), you're hardly learning anything.

Learn Japanese to a good level, then play games with text hooker in the background for easier looking up of the odd word you don't know. And you should look up in J-J explanation disctionary, not just have something machine TL it to English for you.

I was thinking of Japanese commercial non-eroge made specifically in mind for PC. We still get new A-Train from Artdink and new Daisenryaku from System Soft, even PC versions of Koei's non-Dynasty Warriors output, but Falcom's only done one PC port themselves recently (DRM removal and bug-fixing of Zero no Kiseki), and Kogado's relegated Power DoLLS to a web app. Mighty No. 9 is the outlier so far. English localization ports have been coming quickly and successfully, though, so the coma might end in the near-future. Yougekitai, a first-person dungeon crawler CRPG by Telenet. >> No.2435293

>>2435043
Gameplay has its fun moments.
The battle system is a mix of real-time and a little something of tactical-rpg where your damage is based on your distance to your target. This actually looks better in theory than in practice, given that you (at least I) spend most of the time being face to face with the enemy without thinking too much about positioning.
As for attacking, as long as you keep your distance you are free to select any target you want. And compared to SMT2 where magic was pretty much useless, here there are some really nice skills.

One fun point and one Nocturne seems to have its roots on is that you can raise your demons and they will also learn new skills. So you can keep your Pixie until the end if you want it :P

Maybe navigating throughout Tokyo can be a little tiresome specially when the map is huge and the streets some 2, 3 pixels large. Since you have to click on it (and the AI seems to follow only the shortest route available even if it means crossing through a block), it can get a little annoying. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.

As for the Windows version, I haven't played it yet, so I really can't tell you. That may be just me guessing but I think some of the bugs from the PC-98's were corrected and if I'm not mistaken an item you get much latter in the game actually has its importance explained somehow.
Anyhow, if you choose to play the Windows version, be sure to pick up the patch for it. It'll save you from trying to break your computer against one of the first boss battles.

You can download it from here (patch002.lzh):

There were more notable Rogue-likes for early Windows OSes than for proprietary J-PC platforms, to my surprise, but there's still Gekirin and Die Gekirin (development led by Yoshio Kiya of Dragon Slayer fame) for the FM Towns.

>>2464524
Is it Windows-only or is the game known to run in MS-DOS? The latter would mean you'd need to find an autoexec .bat or the main executable that you can enter via command-line after booting MS-DOS (either off a floppy image or HDI). Windows makes it trickier to do via emulator.

Right now I'm getting Fuga System's Beat Vice to play. So far so good, now I just have to figure out the menus.

Yeah that happens sometimes as I got the games from a giant pack (had to download from various file hosting sites in parts) so there may be a good handful of games that are in "loose" condition. Which whenever someone comes across it and makes a post, I'll try and see if I can make a bootable HD file to add to the Mega folder.

I was about to do that with this when I noticed "【PC98】憂楼 ユーロウ Transient Sands.rar" in the よ folder as opposed to the ゆ one and it's already in an bootable format. So I moved it to the correct folder and added "(HDI)" to its name along with "(LOOSE)" for the other one.

Also, here's part of my first run of Dan's third mission in Beat Vice. I forgot that his starter craft doesn't have auxillary power for operating secondary weapons, so I had to use the Vulcan like usual. Something tells me this game's bigger than it looks, since he's only the first of eight characters you can play as, each having a different set of missions and thus story events. I'm gonna have to get a bigger boat when I start over.

This game's all over the place in concept. I'm not surprised Amaranth kept Fuga System alive and better than ever, since that's straightforward fantasy wargaming.

I've been finding some cool tricks for optimizing my run. For example, you can stab at the altar upon which the Idol of Beast sits and that will rocket you off the altar back onto the ground, which saves a few seconds otherwise used for jumping. Using that Idol also lets you do pic related, meaning you don't have to kill the door guard and possess it to kill the blue-armored soldier. Things like this add character to the game.

It's more that pure Rogue-likes weren't common among Japanese platforms because developers preferred to use elements they liked from Rogue/Shiren piecemeal, rather than in a complete genre form.

Also, I'm making a generic "/jpc/ Recommends..." macro anyone can fill in. What's a good aspect ratio/image resolution to go with for these? Something big enough for ~64 games or so (all categorized into groups via legend), but not all these machines have 640x400 resolutions across each game (ex. the MSX platform uses 512x212 and 256x212 display resolutions). Decided to give it a try. Not my best work by a long shot so please be gentle.
Stuff that may have sounded strange in english I decided to use something I judged more appropriate on its place. But I may be wrong.
Apologies for verb tenses that may look weird and everything else.

The universe is born, matter is created and life dwells. Spending an enormous amount of time the universe reached its present form.
And then two consciousness keep struggling dwelling in matter at one point and in life at another.
Both consciousness struggled changing their form respectively into five warriors and one sovereign.
The Five Warriors lead by Heaven and the almighty Hell known for his superhuman powers.
These two forces wandered across planets spreading the conflict among them until they arrived at Earth, which would become their final battlefield.
The Five Warriors built a castle and fought with all their might. And yet in face of the almighty Hell, their power was meaningless. And in the end of this harsh battle they were defeated.
However this defeat was not decisive. And the reason behind it was that the strife between both great consciousness would last for all eternity. In the flow of the everlasting time, this defeat equals nothing. And what's more, the five warriors left a mechanism behind.
They left a so called Time Device on Earth in order to face the challenge once more. And it was a quite clever device. By recombining the genes of humankind the Five Warriors would be born again after a long period of time.
At first, it will awake the one who shall become the leader. And as if in response to this, the castle that was once erected was programmed to rise from the seas and show its form.
Then a long period of time passed.

Nowaways their will has been reborn.
What made it happen was a simple fact.
Everything began when a young man acquired a computer game called Relics.
When this young man started playing Relics the castle that belonged to the five warriors began to move. And slowly it rose.
The battle began anew.
Then the young man's consciousness left his body and entered the castle as if being drawn by something.
And now, your consciousness awakes and it can finally obtain the body that was prepared for the leader of the five warriors. She is also one of the warriors. You both must travel in search of the other three companions scattered across the universe.
So you can defeat your longtime enemy, Hell.

Very interesting; I've got someone else doing another translation of this so I can make a comparison of the interpretations. Tenses don't matter as much for RELICS as for other games' endings, I think, since the story leading to the true ending is possibly cyclical across time. Bothtec was being cheeky by ending the game like this, even if technically anyone could activate the castle by entering the world as a third consciousness perceptible to HEAVEN and HELL.

I'm mostly curious about this:
>At first, it will awake the one who shall become the leader.

The above could refer to either the HERO or the spirit form you take at the start. There's five leaders of HEAVEN but this passage acts like they have a de facto leader.

So after doing a small research concerning the story things started to make some sense.

My guess is that the sentence you mentioned points directly to you, the player, given it's describing how the device left behind by the Warriors (or Soldiers, as it seems to appear in-game) works. If you take into account what is written a few lines below about what triggered the events we see in the game and the castle rising at the intro, I think it makes sense.

As for this de facto leader as you put I think he actually exists. When you finally obtained your true body, it says in the ending that it was "prepared for the one who would become the leader of the Five Soldiers". It may not be clear whether it's you/your spirit or one of the original Soldiers, though. And as a leader, you now have the task to find the rest of your companions, together with the girl (who is also one of the Soldiers).
But maybe this is something that may appear in the sequel.

You seem to be way better informed about the series than I am, so I may be missing something.

Things I have learned from Dragon Slayer:

1. Get the cross, run to the sword, drop the cross, pick up the sword, pick up the cross and run the fuck home.
2. Enemies will get more and more powerful if you keep killing them and eventually will spawn awful faces and vampires that do damage in the 1000s
3. Enemies will avoid ya as you get more powerful. Use that to your advantage to power up.
4. I have a "Break" spell which I'm pretty sure is supposed to destroy walls but I have no idea how to use it

Best part about the MSX port of Warroid is hooking the key-joystick port up to control both player characters simultaneously.

Sadly the sprite-per-scanline limitations weren't accounted for when Yellow Horn programmed this, so there's way more flicker when fighters rest on a scanline than was the case in the X1 original. Major advantage of this version is the intro music and more stages, which are better designed in terms of layout; the physics are slippy by comparison, so now I wish ASCII had been more careful and ported the X1 physics to this. There's also some haphazard item/bomb placement (one of the two cave stages loads the bombs into a corner that you can abuse to one-shot your enemy) and the ability to change stats is gone, but OTOH the round count system is more like tennis and suits the game better than what the X1 version has.

Hmm...I'm going to stick with Takata's original, but the MSX port must have been popular in spite of its ups-and-downs.

Mahjong Triple Wars for PC98 is a pretty fun one that has an RPG style to it that I need to get back to playing. Either way I can totally see why some/most/just about all people don't like em.

Anyone think it'd be possible to convince some of these surviving devs to ever publish their old PC works on Steam?

As I understand Degica's Japan-Only Steam ports (Lunatic Dawn, etc) sell poorly but I can't think the effort is very high. I'd also love to see POWER DoLLS on Steam someday.

>>2498005
Artdink is keen on getting their older games onto Steam, but not on localizing them (which is why there's a translation of LD: Passage of the Book currently in the works). So the problem is providing evidence for demand. Old Falcom games have been selling well but that company's always been shielded from market pressures except in extreme circumstances. In this case I hope Lunatic Dawn gets attention and that Degica can stop fucking about with A-Train outside Japan. Poor sales for the Japanese-only releases are due to a low Japanese user-base on this platform.

In general, the surviving devs can possibly get started on Steam (GOG, ideally, but they'd have to accept their games are going to be pirated no matter what, just like in the old days). Former devs who have transitioned into other markets are likely going to keep licensing their IPs to D4 so you can buy them from Project EGG, ex. Micro Cabin letting them host Xak and Ilusion City among others. Directly contacting and talking with old J-PC developers would get us farther in some contexts, like if there's a potential audience for (again) Xak but only a remake's likely to get enough press. I'm skeptical of crowdfunding but aware it can be used, when other known options fail, to ensure something new can be made of the old J-PC games.

I think I'm addicted to Blassty, it's like the guys who made it knew I love dungeon crawling and mechs. The first person view is very distorting in space since you can't see any "walls" unless you are facing directly in front of one, so I've been mapping everything in by hand. And lord help you if you get lost and can't find the path back to the mothership.

Buying it off of project EGG gave me a PDF along with the manual of all the robot designs, so it's up here if anyone wants it.

None of the games have permadeath (erasing saves upon death), so I think Lunatic Dawn's influenced by Rogue-likes but not in the same category. Another series of CRPGs, Tir-nan-og from System Soft, directly inspired Lunadon, right down to how Artdink marketed their game as a bigger, badder version of that.

No compass, and it's very easy to lose your bearings if you're not paying attention. When you get into a random encounter, it happens imminently when you push a movement key, and then you move after you win the fight. Took a little bit to get used to.

The manual section in this guide here mentions a "Hidden Command" that's a code to display your position, but I'm not sure what key the "Roll Up" button is mapped to on the EGG emulator so I'm toughing it out.

Oh my, this game is something. It's the first original work by a programmer at System Soft called Tinyan, who's still working but not with vidya. EFORMN's basically a Bosconian clone and tech demo in one, and there's also the EZ version of the game for when you don't want to get overwhelmed by nasties. For me it's the most visually impressive PC-6001 game, scrolling even faster than Thunder Force on the X1.

I'd record more footage, but there's no pause function and I'd have to alt-tab into my recorder to use a hotkey to record. The funniest part of this game, aside from the pseudonyms the developers used because holy shit System Soft's not gonna let anyone know who to steal (in 1984 anyway), is how the name entry system makes you put in age and blood type as well. The most badass part is when you shoot a special enemy dogfighter and enter a transformation sequence that leaves you with three-way fire.

Square Resort for the X68k is fun. On each round of a stage you have to flip each of four corners of the map to your color, then proceeding to another round if there aren't enemies still on the map. The only thing I can do is move around and shoot but there's a lot of level variety adding complexity, with elements like minion ships and neutral turrets making chaos. Physics also makes for episodes like the one ending pic related. Music's early Umemoto; I get the feeling this was a quick game for Family Soft because of how janky some of the round transitions are (plus how the barebones menu graphics).

Princess Maker 1 always had the better art of the first two series installments. The ending and intermittent storyboards are more detailed (even if they're dithered to make space) and it feels like Takami Akai put his all into fleshing out the game world more than in PM2. Music and mechanics both improved for the better for PM2 as far as I can tell, but there's a charm and relevance to its precursor too.

Here's what bugs me: when I first started posting about the Japanese PC games I was playing, back last year with Thexder, barely anyone would respond to comments about the game itself and mainly to what I said about larger concepts (birth of Japanese RPGs, differences between Big Three/MSX platforms, &c.). Now that I'm posting more OC than before, /jpc/'s practically dead compared to how active it was during spring (thanks to eroge Anons, I suppose). New threads made in the past two days, for the most part, have been getting 10 or more posts and plenty of feedback, plus shitposting. Somehow we're not getting any of the summer activity, for better or worse, and that's driving me nuts. I'm not confident at all that, if I'm not around to bump when /jpc/'s approaching doom, someone else will (with more than just "bump").

What's your impression of this general so far? I don't know if the OP's giving a bad impression (no one's given me substantial criticism of it), if people just don't know what the subject is at all (meaning I've failed to discuss it more broadly), or if people think Don Rumata's left (I'm going to use my trip and the name Pasokon Deacon when it's needed for clarification/new threads). Nothing's changed for the worse AFAIK, but maybe there's something I don't know that's a problem. I bump with content whenever the bottommost thread on index page 1's only had its most recent post 6 to 12 minutes from my incoming post—this started when I figured asking for Anons' time zones was invasive and unnecessary.

Any good western or computer style CRPG's on Japanese computers? I know of Lunatic Dawn and was wondering if anything else was inspired by Western gaming. I know Wizardry was pretty popular in Japan, so maybe something inspired by that. Dunno why Wizardry was such a big hit, though.

You can easily subscribe for a month with Project EGG and get that + all their free games and the latest EGG Player build. There's a guide here (tailored for buying Wander Wonder from Compile Station) for upgrading your free account to a paid one: http://heroesoflegend.retro-type.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=20

Not saying you should always use EGG, but I'm not as likely to get Maze-kun from Tokugawa since they usually redirect you to Usenet to download TOSEC's set.

No need to apologize. You, Joseph Joestar, and Kaze Hakase are busy enough. That said, I worry so much about /jpc/ that I can't get to work on Pasokon Deacon as much as I'd like. And I once let a /jpc/ thread die because I was being negligent and sure that someone would bump it—hopefully this can stabilize and we'll have a long streak of productive, shorter threads. I really just want to finish this thread at 61 days and start the next one, because it's possible these generals fall into a trap where Anons are so used to seeing the OP that it's taken for granted we're doing well. /vr/ is either the best or most middling place for Japanese PC discussion these days.

•Sword World PC (solo character creation, non-linear quest-based progression, based on a Japanese tabletop rulebook adapted from D&D—good stuff, though it's Japanese-only for the moment)
•(Advanced) Fantasian (two Wizardry-likes from Xtalsoft, Japanese-only; Advanced has towns as well, putting it closer to The Bard's Tale)
•Genesis (Square's post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure, translated into English)
•Digan no Maseki/Digan's Magic Stone (Closest a PC-X8 dev got to making an immersive sim, with turn-based battles, choices & consequences, and minor events sprinkled in-between the plot...Japanese-only for now)
•Yougekitai (Pic related, you lead a corps of ESPers around modern-day Tokyo)
•The Screamer (older Wizardry-like with a Mad Max-inspired theme, has an English patch and skill-based battles)

Tons more!

One cool thing that I wish I knew earlier about Cyberblock was that if you switch control to analog, it'll use the mouse instead of the keyboard.

Not only are you able to move 2fast2furious now, it also changes your first power-up to a "catch" power-up which like in Arkanoid will grab the ball (except here it only works once). If you use keyboard controls, your first power-up on the list will be "turbo" which lets you move faster by holding down the shift key. It's pretty cool that switching control schemes in the options would change something like that.

>> No.2531496

>>2531449
Sounds like I have to give it a shot, given you've said it's a more accessible riff on Arkanoid. Different starter power-ups for different control schemes is something you don't see very often, I like it.

Meanwhile, CRPG Addict's reviewed Hydlide and Dragon Slayer on the assumption that either qualify as RPGs (links aren't allowed). He's generally unkind to Japanese RPGs released in 1984 and 1985, though I bet something like Mugen no Shinzou II or The Screamer would do better for him. I see Brain Breaker (a commenter who apparently helped Szczepaniak and Derboo) is still with us.

I find it funny that some think Dragon Slayer influenced Hydlide: a retrospective T&E Soft released for the series's Windows remakes has Tokihirio Naito saying he didn't anticipate Courageous Perseus, Cosmos Computer's Druaga-like that preceded both of the others, and that maybe sales wouldn't be so good after all. Both games take after Tower of Druaga and Ultima specifically (maybe the latter applies more to Kiya since he was prototyping ideas for a Japanese RPG with Panorama Island a year earlier).

I get the impression that this thread is sometimes too alien (which is not a bad thing) to bring people up here, you know. Not to mention the language barrier which doesn't help either, although it never prevented anyone from searching for obscure stuff. It's a niche subject with very few people debating over it. So I get it when it feels like there is no one paying attention.

/jpc/ is one of the few places I care to visit regularly and participate. Others probably feel the same way. So rest assured your efforts are not in vain.
Other than that has anyone tried Emerald Densetsu by System House Oh! ?
Some side-scrolling rpg with random battles which caught my sight some time before.
Originally released to PC-88 it lately received a X68k version (as well as a PC-98) as well but I haven't stumbled upon it yet.

And the MSX port for comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qd2e87Kncc

Game looks kinda like an Apogee plartformer at first, but it's got more in common with other J-PC dungeon crawlers aside from having more options for movement/shooting. Title refers to some aspect of the plot I can only glean from machine translation, best just not to worry too much until the ending. It's fun so far, and challenging as there's a lot of resource management I've fucked up.

Anyone have suggestions for what the next OP should look like? I don't have all the pixel art that's been uploaded, maybe someone has an image for the frame inlay that I should use. What I would like to do sometime is insert a loop animation into the frame instead, as that would get Anons' interest.

For some reason, I can't equip ranged or other weapons, maybe my strength or level is too low.

Run away from most bad guys, even fighting the typical thug, aka Mohican, is dangerous. Be prepared to miss a lot. Fighting merchants in town is one of the few ways to get some experience. I have no idea how much is required to level up. At ~20 and still weak as fuck.

Mainly use my money to heal back up, which is expensive.

Insiders originally released on the PC-88. Game's a riff on Dragon Quest-style adventures but takes place inside your computer (think of it like TRON); you're told you've been given "the best part-time job", a way of saying you have to progress through different regions (like hardware and software) to reach the villain, Devil Halton. Simple combat, but there's a lot of tricky logic puzzles and obtuseness that's given the game its cult reputation over there.

Aside from that, usual suspects include Telenet's Exile, Relics, Mizuryu-shi (CRPG with odd water mythology theme), and Bandai's Southern Cross (no relation to the anime). I can talk more about these in the next thread.

I agree. It's nothing like a roguelike except for the push to walk combat. If there is any sort of a manual I'd like to find it and manually crank my way through the Japanese. the Xtra commands interest me, because maybe there's a way to open the doors or intereact with the world a bit more. It's interesting to find a JRPG that gives you some semblance of freedom by having the ability to kill friendly characters. Although I guess it's not a JRPG then, but yeah whatever you know what I mean.

Yeah, I came across a town with a bunch of prostitutes. Woulda cost me 200 to sleep with one of them. Apparently you can get a different selection of girls, as they tell you which woman you're paired with. Unfortunately, I'm trapped in a town with mechas and tanks roaming outside so I can't really leave without dying.

I'm gonna have to look for any hint on the xtra commands. Everything else seems fairly straight forward command wise. Still would like to know why I can't equip certain weapons, since I think that would save me from reloading every 5 minutes.

It'd be great to find out if some of the merchants I killed are required for later quests. Or if there are any downsides to straight up murdering townsfolk. It does give me a kind of cool vibe, that to survive I have to become a piece of shit since everything else in the wasteland will tear me up.
