YO, /vr/! Question.

How is maintenance for arcade cabinets? How pricey is it? how difficult is it to repair something?

I ask because I've gone to my nearby arcade and a bunch of their games had one problem or another.
>Crazy taxi's gas pedal being stuck (No crazy boosting!), Mortal kombat's high punch button not working, Virtua fighter 2's guard button not as responsive as the other buttons, time crisis 3's left gun's trigger not popping back out like it's supposed to, and after burner's controls holding right at all times

I want to buy the House of the dead EX cabinet in an effort to document everything about the game and garner interest for a port to consoles and I've been thinking about trying to get the cabinet to pay itself off over the course of 4 years if possible but I'm scared it'll get damaged horrifically or something.

Any advice?

>Crazy taxi's gas pedal being stuck (No crazy boosting!)
Could just need a clean

>Time crisis 3's left gun's trigger not popping back out like it's supposed to
Spring inside gun snapped?

>Mortal kombat's high punch button not working
New switch, easy to fix

>Virtua fighter 2's guard button not as responsive as the other buttons
See above

>After burner's controls holding right at all times
Not sure on this one

With gun games the major issue is the screen and calibration, ill just say that the home ports of it where total shite

Well, okay. I guess most of my worries are gone now.

Thanks, anon. Now I just hope nobody steals it or rips the guns off. I don't THINK Valencia is too ghetto of a location..

Scout the place you are putting it first,
>Check the crowd, are they rowdy, do things get broke, or are they generally people out for a fun time.
>Check the age range, students or old folk?
>See if theres any other machines in there and look at there condition.
ONE MORE THING!!
>See how often people put money in the machines and play, plonking a machine in somewhere is all very well but are people putting money in to play? Will the owner of the place want a massive machine taking up drinking space.

Difficult. Prohibitively. Insanely.

Actually it ranges, CP repair is easy, monitor and PCB repair is the hard bit

>> No.2535214

>>2535187
Monitor repair is where most the money is going to go. More so if the game uses some monitor that isn't produced anymore.

I think that is a projection screen for that house of dead cab. That bulb is going to be so fucking expensive to replace.

Sega didn't half ass their cabs. But if you are going to get that House of Dead cab. Shave off around 300 dollars asking.

Crazy Taxi - Would just need a clean maybe or a new 5K potentiometer - http://na.suzohapp.com/all_catalogs/driving_controls/220-5373

Time Crisis 3 - The spring in Namco guns are just a general spring, just measure it length and width and grab one from a DIY store but if the plastic bit for the trigger is broke grab a new one as well - http://na.suzohapp.com/all_catalogs/optical_guns/VG90-04931-00

Mortal Kombat & Virtua Fighter 2 - Check to see if any cables have been disconnected or dislodged from the cherry switch and if the cables are good that most likely means its worn out but they are cheap and easy to replace, simply unscrew and replace - http://na.suzohapp.com/all_catalogs/electrical_supplies/95-0733-90

After Burner - Most likely one of the potentiometer's have done or a spring has broken inside.

From experience fixing arcade machines can 50/50, sometimes you can get a easy fix or you get a nightmare of job to fix, I specially hate the ones when you need to get a specialist part which is nor longer made or available used, for example I have been chasing a fucking Vampire Night DLX JVS I/O board for nearly two years and still no joy.

Thanks for the advice, kind anon.

Have you tried contacting Namco directly about the matter?

Examples

>Fighting mania - damn those pads
>Anything with hydraulics (Afterburner to name one)
Actually and machine with moving parts outside the CP can be a pain.

I have seen experts fix arcade machines and most of the time they can see right away what's wrong with part of it.
Monitors are a major pain, some places do still sell them but they are not cheap,

Man if you successfully manage to do this I'll probably end up falling in love with you even if you turn out to be the stinkiest fattest neckbeard in the entire world. You have no clue how much I've been wanting a port of the first House of the Dead that isn't total dogshit.

No, not the first house of the dead.

House of the dead EX.

Y'know... Loving deads? Not retro but /v/ doesn't know SHIT about arcades. They could probably bundle it with the first and second HOTD as part of an HD deal though, I could image.

Yeap got in contact with Namco UK (where I'm based) and they wanted £350+ for the luxury of sending it to Namco Japan to "maybe" be able to fix it, and still there was no guarantee they could even fix it. So after that great news it has just sat on the side of the arcade as a giant box. I am currently in the process of converting both guns internally and neatly to have Aimtrak modules in them and basically run a PS2 inside the cabinet with a copy of Vampire Night, I know its not ideal but when the game is running its the same experience, oh for the record if you where curious about how the coin mech would work, all the machines in the arcade are set to free play, you just pay a entry fee at the door.

Funny enough we have a Fighting Mania in the arcade and I have had to patch it up a fee times, the last time was because some idiot punch a pad so hard that a cable came loose and when the metal arm went backwards it cut the cable in half like a giant pair of scissors and killed the connection to the LED board in the pad...fucking idiot... that was "fun" to get working nicely/safely again.

Nice. I like your style. Personally I would go for a "one-quarter for one-play" type of arcade but your gig is the next best thing.

Thank you very much anon, we also have aload of retro and modern consoles set up too, the only down side to everything be free-play is some of the older game PCB's don't always have a free-play option via the dip switches so on a few cabs we have had to neatly drill and add a credit to the coin door on a few.
