2527402 No.2527402 [Reply] [Original]

Greetings, /vr/. What are some lesser known games for GB/C that you would recommend? I've already poured over RacketBoy's list of underrated games, but I was hoping you guys could recommend some others. Any genre is welcome.

>> No.2527418 [DELETED]

I got this exact gameboy for my birthday when I was a kid, along with a super nintendo and a virtual boy. Jesus christ I got spoiled that year.

Raiding this thread to ask a sub-question because I dont want to make a second "recommend me obscure GB games" threads -

What are good, unique adventurey games on the GB/C with fun scenery? Anything from zelda-esque to something more like Dragon Quest. If it helps any, my favorite game of all time is Startropics. Don't judge.

>> No.2527547

>>2527531

There are only a handful of action-adventure titles for GB/C. Off the top of my head:

Battle of Olympus - A strong Zelda II clone set in ancient Greece
Metroid II
Gargoyle's Quest - Also similar to Zelda II, but based more on the Mega Man engine

>> No.2527560

>>2527547
That's disappointing. Thank you though. Its good to know I shouldn't look too hard. The GB has a big library and it isn't easy to navigate when you're looking for a needle in a hay stack.

There are of course more. Those were just off the top of my head. Here's a more complete list:

Lot of good games hide behind licenses. A lot of French-Belgian comics had got games since Bit Managers got to work on them.
Obelix
Smurfs
The Smurfs' Nightmare
Lucky Luke
Spirou: The Robot Invasion
Papyrus
Good games. Smurfs 2 is shit though. Not by Bit Managers or anyone with talent. They also made GB/C ports for the whole Turok series and besides the first one, they are actually good.
Lot of people think Wave Race started on the 64, but that's actually a sequel to the GB game.
The Crazy Castle series is fantastic, whatever license they may be using. I like it with Hugo the most.
The Bong games are actually good. Lots of Kunio-kun games like Nintendo World Cup.
For crazy dungeon crawling there is Mysterium, Towers: Lord Baniff's Deceit, Azure Dreams, Cave Noire and the massive Wizardry series (8 games for the GB/C).
Action-adventures: Rolan's Curse 1, 2, Ninja Taro, Crystalis, Adventures of the Smurfs, Daikatana and Xena.
RPGs, Grandia, Lufia, Dragonheart, Great Greed and Knight Quest, Sword of Hope, Deja Vu and Shadowgate.
Personally, I love Revenge of the Gator, Kirby's Pinball and Super Robot Pinball.

I'm shocked that no one has sperged out over you using the term "hidden gems" yet, not sure why but for a while there were a bunch of people that used to get really angry over people using that phrase.

>> No.2527961

>>2527531
why would anyhow be angry at you for one of your favorite games of all time being Startropics? I'm pretty sure most people here that have played it would agree that it's a good game....

>> No.2527973

Dig Dug - It's both a port of the original arcade game plus an arrangement mode where you run around unique stages collecting keys to unlock the exit. Definitely a worthy sequel.

Not sure if many people played the Bomberman games for GB, but Atomic Punk and Bomberman GB were pretty awesome. Atomic Punk lets you purchase power-ups to carry into levels with you, and Bomberman GB has a fun versus CPU mode. Some of the other Bombman GB games were never localized.

Ninja Boy - It's basically a port of Kung-Fu Heroes from NES, albeit with a Japanese theme. If you liked Kung-Fu Heroes, this will be right down your alley.

Nobunaga's Ambition - The only localized Koei strategy game for GB, I think. It's similar to the NES version, but with some enhancements.

Tetris 2 - This sequel is sorely overshadowed by its predecessor. The gameplay is more similar to Flash Columns in that you have to clear flashing blocks from the grid by matching them with three or more similarly colored blocks. Also included is a versus CPU mode and a puzzle mode.

It's not exactly a "hidden gem", I'd even say it's one of the most popular racing games for the gameboy. But I have to agree, it's quite a fun game and the gameplay mechanics are a bit more elaborate than it seems at first.

I've got to second "Dragon Heart" as being very cool - it's a pseudo-3d first person rpg, one of the very few on the GB.

It's, amusingly, one of the best games Metal Gear in general has ever had. I think it's strangely overlooked--even more than the MSX games.

my latest by for 15 €, that Links AwakeningDX bootleg works perfectly and had old saves on it, and the other games are all worth buying. Mercenary Force is a sidescroller where you can hire up to 4(?) fighters and change their positions, so it's like having a customizable spaceship in R-Type or the like. I haven't played too much of the game yet, but it looks like an interesting and promising gameplay.

i never understood why bootleggers put "game" on the carts instead of just putting "gameboy"

i don't think that gonna help you if nintendo sues you bruh

Nintendo may not sue the individual bootlegger, but these plastic cases are produced in volume. The company that does that probably doesn't want to lose any customers or money.

Be happy they just write GAME on them, that way it's easier to separate the from legit games. Though in some cases (huehue) bootleg games can be found in original-looking cartridges.

Its a top down 8 way shooter, but you can only turn 1 direction as far as I know which isnt a problem, you just have to prepare your aiming.

Very easy and short.
