You posted it, also OutRun 2.

Both for similar reasons, fantastic music, good graphics, great arcade style gameplay and controls, fun and replayable. Also, the racing team managers in R4 added charm to the game.

Type 4 is amazing, but for arcade titles I'd say NFS High Stakes. It's really fast, has some of my favourite vehicles of all times I miss seeing Diablo in games ;_;, dat soundtrack, good controls, damage which isn't only visual and can fuck up your ride and it's enough challenging. And the Hot Pursuit mode is fun as hell

Ridge Racer Revolution here. The bright, hypercolor fantasy island look, the fun, almost too silly soundtrack, the standout track design. Love that game. Wish it had more tracks (it has the original two RR1 tracks on the disc, but they're link-play only for whatever reason).

Never really got R4's handling, and I'm not the biggest fan of its track design either. Absolutely gorgeous game though, and it has a truly fantastic sense of style. I just don't like it as much as the rest.

Rage Racer. I never played the other ridge racers, so I'm obviously biased. It's repetitive and the music is meh, but great for simple arcade style racing. It's my favorite because I'm a busy person, so I really like games which I can pick up when I have a few minutes and enjoy some quality arcade racing fun. The two methods of turning offer just enough challenge to master without taking away from the arcade style fun.

So many posts and no one has mentioned the excellent WipEout series yet. While the first game was rather unforgiving, 2097/XL and Wip3out were two of the finest racers of the PlayStation. Even up to the last incarnation on the PS3 and Vita they have remained consistently solid and enjoyable (the PS2 version is the only black sheep for me).

2097 has a special place in my memory as being the first game I wanted to buy after getting a PlayStation for Christmas after playing the demo one disc religiously until boxing day. But the high resolution mode, excellent track design, boost mechanic and pumping trance soundtrack (from DJ Sasha and others) of Wip3out make this one my favourite.

No Rollcage either? You guys are missing out.

Published by the Wipeout guys, though it was heavily downplayed by Sony. Because Sony saw it as a competitor to Wipeout, it got shit for advertising and funding. Difficult, but if you play high speed racers you'll love that anyway.

It's a bit different. Each car can drive on both sides. A bit less about taking curves and more about physics fuckery like per-wheel surface-dependent grip, driving on walls and ceilings, and of course wipeout-style combat. A lot of it is just fighting to maintain grip at massive speeds.

Even though F-Zero and Wipeout are my most played games, Rollcage is one of a kind. I love it.

High Stakes is the pinnacle of the classic NFS series. Underground marked a fundamental change in the series, from luxury cars to ricers.

Looks and cars aside, High Stakes also had one of the most awesome career/progression system, with High Stakes races that you can actually lose, with costs to bad races, and with a system that will allow you to go broke, if you don't plan well. Wished more racing games would acknowledge the player like that.

wipEout, F-Zero and Rollcage are a bit the holy trinity of futuristic arcade racers. Such a variety in handling and design.
In Rollcage I love the destructible environment, and the choice of weapons. It really feels like unleashing utter carnage on an innocent track. The game gave me some of the most memorable laughing-like-a-maniac moments, because it's just so crazy in its presentation. Your webm is a pretty good example of that feeling. Everything seems totally out of control, and yet ... also, that glowing shield is a brilliant detail. When the orange appears, you know you're doing it right.

XL/2097 isn't a bad pick.

I think it's the best Wipeout game in the whole series still (even edging out HD because I like the handling model in XL better).
1's got screwy collisions, 3 and 3SE's got funky handling and seems a little like a step back as a whole even though it's so stylish and minimalist, and Fusion's kind of awful (and not /vr/).

>I think it's the best Wipeout game in the whole series still (even edging out HD because I like the handling model in XL better).
Totally agree. The cars are much nicer to throw sideways and stuff, there's so much more you can *do* with them. The subsequent wipeouts were more about straightline speed along the tracks as designed, and less about creative driving, lifting and diving the car to create your own lines.

XL is a great choice, definitely one of the best games in the series.
What I love is the contrast between XL and wo3. Both are styled "futuristic", however, while XL is all about flashy neon and loud techno music, wo3 is all about sterile minimalism and cold electronic music. It's this contrast, between two closely related games, that pushes the pair of them together to the top of the list.

People usually recognize two trilogies, with two distinct physics models. Both are pretty good, but very different. First trilogy is wipEout, XL/2097 and wo3. Second trilogy is Pure, Pulse and HD/Fury

While I do prefer the old school model, I still got to say that the new model is not without merits. In the old model it's all about wrestling your craft, to make it do what you want, to "beat" a track. In the new model it's more about the momentum, and smoothing everything out as much as you can, seeking extra boosts. It's a different kind of racing.

In close relation to that, the old trilogy is considerably faster. Rapier speed is already a thrill ride and Phantom is just plain nuts. It was Phantom on XL that made me think of the term "twitch racer", because that's the only way to keep up with that insane speed, muscle twitches while you're in the zone. Meanwhile, in the new trilogy, Rapier is a fairly relaxing joyride. Not exactly school zone speed, but nothing to get worked up over. Phantom is kind of Rapier speed of the old times. If you want the speed rush on the new trilogy, you got to play Zone mode, which sucks a bit.

>> No.2518930

>>2518920
Yer Zone mode isn't great. Thanks for the infos though, i hadn't realised people had gone that deep into it. I did find 2097 to be superior to WO3 in handling terms, but i'll have to give the rest of the series another look.

I came here to say WipEout 3 SE and found that some people were already discussing it. What a good day, I rarely get to talk about one of my favorite game series.
I prefer WipEout 3 SE purely for the amount of content it has and how it improves the controls from the regular edition. 2097 is a close second, and while I greatly enjoy WipEout 3's style I sort of miss 2097 really dark tracks that give off a really neat atmosphere. This stuff was pretty absent in 3, even going as far to change the lighting in the Classic League re-designs.

>> No.2519048

>>2519034
Content is nice, but I would argue 2097 is still superior for the handling and feel. An example would be right at the end of your clip, where the quirex nearly touches the wall - that move, the feel of the cars, the weight and response of them, the last minute tricks and corrections on the fly (climing right stick, tap thrust, left airbrake in quick sucession, tapping right airbrake at same time - that kind of thing), was not nearly as workable or refined in WO3/SE, though WE3 came closer than later titles. I sometimes wonder if the real magic was an accident of design, like bunnyhopping in Quake.

Whatever style of racing game I want to play, one of the second generation of PSX racers usually fits the bill.
