Just started playing this game, what am I in for? Should I use a guide? How often should I grind? Is it hard?

Just play the fucking game. It's a 20 year old JRPG for kids, I think you can manage.

>> No.2512008

I dropped it because I didn't know where I was supposed to go or what the fuck I was supposed to do.
The game was charming though, maybe I'll try one more time in the future

Prepare to grind your ass off and endure a load of random encounters. Personally I find it to be the weakest title in the series although it does have a uniquely melancholy view of suburban life compared to the rest of the series, with large, abandoned zoos, haunted houses, factories, etc. The music is excellent however, and the story really picks up towards the end although its a bit sparse before then. The battle system is fairly simplistic too, honestly most PSI techniques are fairly redundant.

Give it a go if you like other Mother titles or old school JRPGs

Yeah it always irked me how that naming convention, makes sense except not. Hurr durr the foreign localization of the second release is called earthbound not mother 2, so clearly the mother translation is earthbound 0 because everyone knows naming things usually starts with at the second title. Fucking idiots.

>Mother
>Mother 2(eb)
>Mother 3

Somehow comes out to be:

>Earthbound 0
>Earthbound
>????

Just call it mother, everyone playing the game knows that's what it is. Earthbound is just the localization title. But a rose by any other name..

you retards are aware the prototype was always called earthbound, correct? zero was added to the title screen by demiforce because the autist that bought the cart wanted his to be unique, figuring that it would keep value this way.

>>2512538
>the prototype naming convention is the one to go with because that's what it was going to be.

Yeah no.

Just because the devs thought Donkey Kong's appearance was startlingly similar to your mother's doesn't mean they called the game "Your Mom" that was the in house dev name, the game is still called Donkey Kong. Good to know yet another person is under the impression that being an extra special snowflake is more important than being accurate. The only way to get away with calling it EB 0 would be if it was the prototype and not just Mother retitled.

I was there back in the day. The guy with the prototype had just won it in an auction for ~$500. He didn't agree to dumping it until the (then quite small) community agreed to pay him that amount. Which I understand, he had just paid a significant price (in 1997, no less) for what he thought was a unique piece. This was in the early days of emulation, remember.

I wonder where that guy is now?

>> No.2515876

Just played through the unedited Prototype ROM last week, so I have a few pointers I can give you:

As far as the grind goes, you should only need to grind each character once and thats when you first get them to bring them up to speed.
Ana and Lloyd start off at Lv 1, get them at least to 10+ in Magicant before heading back to the Real world.
Teddy doesnt need any grinding when you get him.

When you rescue Pipi, head north of My Home and have her help you grind outside the Zoo to get Ninten to at least Level 10 before returning her to the Mayor.

Don't bother buying any weapon for anyone except Boomerangs , they are the second best weapon that anyone can equip and Unlike in Earthbound. There isn't an accuracy penalty for using a ranged weapon.

Most offensive PSI is useless aside from PK Beam Gamma (Instant Kill), Freeze Gamma (Reduces enemy to single digits) , if you grind like mad you can get Fire Omega (instant kill, all enemies) but you don't need it.

Save your PP for Lifeup and Healing, once you get Sheild Beta use it durring every boss fight because it halves damage on your entire party.

4thDSlip lets you escape from any fight instantly, so abuse it in tough dungeons and in the final area.

Magicant has a free hospital and Inn so if you're getting wrecked use the Onyx Hook to warp back instantly.

You can USE Bread (as opposed to EATing it) to gain BreadCrumbs
you can use the Crumbs to instantly warp back to wherever you USEd the Bread, so use at the entrance to a dungeon to warp out quickly.

Dont try to walk through the train tunnels unless you grind to a rediculous ammount.

The final dungeon is a bullshit difficulty spike and will he hard no matter what, Just run from most encounters.

I was able to beat the game with Ninten at Lv 31 and Lloyd and Ana were both 28, hardly high enough for Ninten and Ana to have all their PSI skills but enough to get by just fine.

Pretty good tips.
A lot of people ignore the bread crumbs, it helps a lot as a sort of checkpoint/save mechanic, as well as beign quite ingenious in a Hansel and Gretel homage way.

>The final dungeon is a bullshit difficulty spike and will he hard no matter what, Just run from most encounters.

Once you get EVE's memory chip, you can use the Onyx Hook to teleport to Magicant, get healed, then use the moemory chip to teleport back to where EVE's remains lie on Mt. Itoi.

>> No.2515971

>>2511989
I got the same question right now. I just bought it!

>> No.2515987

>>2515936
If im not mistaken, unless you're playing a hack that adds it, the Memory Chip is only in the GBA version.
Eve Doesn't give anything but the Seventh Melody peice in the NES version.

>> No.2516001

>>2515987

Damn, you might be right.
I didn't know that was exclusive to the GBA version, I thought I just might have missed it on the NES ver.
It really did help a lot.

Anyway, yeah, 4th D-slip to escape from battles, using the onyx hook, then teleport to go back to wherever you were really makes the game easier.

On my first playthrough of it (the NES version) I remember not using the onyx hook at all (In fact, I think I skipped the Fish boss fight completely), and also never used 4th d-slip.
It was a kind of brutal playthrough but still doable.

Holy hell, I cant even imagine going through Mt.Itoi/Holy Loly Mt without it, those grizzlies can do like 160 DMG on a good roll and my Ninten was only pushing like 150 max.

What version of the original game is Earthbound Beginnings (the one officially released on the Nintendo eShop)? The basic JP rom? The english prototype? A newly translated version? Have they rescaled random encounters and exp?

>> No.2517096

>>2517091

I haven't played it myself, but apparently it's the unreleased english ROM, including the run button that makes NPCs move faster.

GBA version is still the "definitive" version except for the sound.
