Another Metroid 2 Remake is pretty damn cool.

Super Castlevania 4 is probably the best unknown remake out there. Because nobody knows it's a remake.

Cuz it's not. It's another game that has the same premise as Castlevania 1. But it's all new stages, enemies, music, graphics, etc. So new game.

obligatory post.

it's Shadowgate 2014 and reboot of the original Shadowgate game for the NES and all the versions on other systems as well as SG Classic for the GB Color.

if you're on Steam or GoG, you just gotta buy it. it has so much content and was really good. not even shilling or trying to. But as a diehard fan I'd love to see Deja Vu and Uninvited remakes as well as the already promised Beyond Shadowgate game coming next year.

both.

they are both great. I think you mean Sword of Mana by the GBA remake. I played it for a bit and I was very impressed. Looks great.

can't go wrong with Final Fantasy Adventure either. it has its own charm. I'm not even half way through yet but it's really solid. Better than FF Legend 1-3.

>> No.2489958

>>2489821
i'd say play ffa/seiken densetsu first to see where the series started. then after you've played some other titles in the series check out sword of mana. sword of mana really just is not as good of a game as the original in general, despite (or because of?) its attempts to carry the aesthetic/mechanics of the later games back to the original story.

Better graphics, unless you like RPG maker tier sprites
Better difficulty since you don't pull stat up chances out of your ass like the GBA/PSP remakes and the enemies are not nerfed dumb punching bags.
And before anyone mention it
>Grinding in FFII
>Actually hitting your party members
If you really think those two are necessary you should stop playing RPGs.

Megaman anniversary is a great game, but it has different problems for each system. Gamecube version has the run/jump button switched(why, whyyy). PS2 version's 480p output is a bit too stretched, very noticeable for Megaman 7. The Xbox has a crisp , clean, perfect 480p signal, but the d-pad is fucking garbage and playing a Megaman game with a thumbstick just isn't right. I can't choose between Xbox or PS2, the Xbox's output just looks so freaking good, what a waste...

How can it be a cool game? It was never finished or released.

>>2489945

I thought Sword of Mana for GBA was terrible. There are so many beta elements still in the game.

>Most of the spells are literally useless
Half the spell effects do absolutely nothing. For instance, what's the purpose of "Bubble Boat"? You float around in a bubble, you're still vulnerable to damage from enemy attacks, you cannot attack while in the bubble, and the bubble cannot actually carry you across obstacles or pitfalls. Then there was a spell that was supposed to increase your movement speed. What it actually did was increase your walking speed to running speed, but also preventing you from being able to run. What?

>Shields were dummied out before the final release
You can still find them in the game code. For some arbitrary reason, they decided to disable shields and give weapons a chance to block incoming attacks instead. How this even makes sense in the case of the bow, I'm not sure.

>>2492492

There weren't load times in the Origins version, unless you're referring to very brief black screens when entering or leaving dungeons. I've completed each game at least four times.

As long as they have the same plot then its a fucking waste of time playing the inferior version which is evidently the nes version. I was able to clean my library of quite a few remakes I wasn't aware of for some extra dosh on ebay.

Now if I ever decide to start the castlevania series I can do four first then Simons quest and akumajou Densetsu and then whatever one is number four. I really think owning two or more of the same game is retarded. I got some nice cash off sword of mana resident evil directors cut and twin snakes.

No reason to own those since I have REmake Final fantasy adventure and mgs psx.

>> No.2494389

The PSP version is Origins, but with updated character sprites, graphics, and game mechanics, such as leveling up spells much faster. Not to mention the new arcane dungeons and save anywhere you want feature.

Origins is pretty dated, take into consideration that in the Origins version of Final Fantasy 1, you can't even save on the field unless you use a sleeping bag/tent.

>> No.2494510

>Hitting your own party members

This is necessary if you put any of them in the back row. Maria starts there by default so if you don't move her up into the front row you can still have her at 30HP max halfway through the game.

I do agree that Origin's gameplay choices were better than the PSP version, but only on second playthrough - Origins locks you to Easy difficulty on your first run, which is virtually identical to the PSP version's difficulty. So at first blush you may not even see any difference.

That all said, if you like FF2 Origins enough to play it a second time, you may as well just roll right into SaGa instead.

It bothers me how in the taxman remake of Sonic CD the time reset mechanic was removed completely (that is, when you're past 5 minutes on a level and you time travel either to past or future, the timer resets back to 5'00 on the original, but not on the remake, timer stays the same)

The newer versions are less painful to play but from a strict gameplay balancing perspective neither version really comes out on top because just every version ends up fiddling with what's the best.

Like the original lifted its magic system wholesale from fucking Dungeons and Dragons which made one of the simpler and effective ways to play that game was just to forgo magic entirely in favour of all punchmans. Maybe one Red Mage if you don't fancy missing all magic forever but not having most of your DPS limited by Tents and shit.

later versions gave it the standard MP system and unfucked a lot of the spells (fair number of them are useless in the original) and now magic is holy shit good and you'd need to be partially retarded to give it up.

I've played every version of FF1. Literally. Even the MSX2 port. IMO, FF Origins is the best version.

>Improved translation, even though the spell inventories are questionable and take blatant liberties.
>Mechanically purer than other ports, but also introduces bugfixes. Some bugs were retrofitted into the game, and various things balanced out to compliment them. e.g. I think the critical hit tables may be based on the same principle as the original.
>Non-restrictive inventory, even though I personally like the challenge of a more limited inventory system.
>Beautifully enhanced graphics, and added CG sequences.
>Orchestrated soundtrack.
>The Thief / Ninja is sensibly rebalanced into a more useful character.
>Chaos' HP is doubled. He still feels like a push-over, though.

Ditto for FF2, despite some translation quirks.

Worth picking up for sure though. The additions in Sonic 1 and 2 are really good too. The fact that the finished off Hidden Palace and made a boss for it really shows that those guys should be handed the keys to the classic series and just be allowed to make new ones on the retro engine.

>>2498614
the original is a first person perspective pure adventure game, it's also point and click unlike Shadowgate 64 so it's still closer to the Monkey Island games. then there is Beyond Shadowgate (for the PC Engine or Duo CD I believe) which was a point and click adventure, probably the closest to Monkey Island.

The original game has some death scenes when you do something wrong or pick a wrong patch and then you die, the death scenes are narrative with a bit of explanation of what happened to you. Then the original game just goes back to the start screen and have you reload from the last savepoint you made.

Beyond SG was trickier. there were a few points where you had to backtrack far but this doesn't happen really at all in the first SG game.

you should play Shadowgate Classic for GBC which is pretty faithful as an adaption of the original or skip that and play Shadowgate 2014 straight away. they got a lot of modes and one of them is really close to the original too. the rest of these modes have alterating and new content.
