It was generally seen a just shock because the story wasn't unfolded well enough to really put an emphasis that it was motivated by multiple reasons so it appeared that she was killed basically to fuck with Cloud.

This wasn't the first death in an RPG. Hell, this wasn't even the first death in Final Fantasy. HELL, this wasn't even the first death of a main party member in Final Fantasy.

And the FMV for this is actually kind of laughable with how cheesy it is watching Aerith's doll-like body bob around before she shuts her eyes like a Furby going into sleep mode.

What does it?

That fucking music. That's what does it.

Nah, even back in 1997 I was laughing at it. I mean, it was an impressive FMV sequence, but the actual animation and Aerith's face were hilarious to me.

Also, I love the absolute lack of blood and then them retconning it to make it work.

I think he's talking more FF5. Where a very prominent member of your main party is killed off.

Its not like Aeris, who you need to use for all of 3 minor sections
>After airbuster to just after don corneo
>Going down the elevator of the Shinra Building to escape (2 boss battles right after another and maybe 1 or 2 randoms along the way)
>Temple of the Ancients
Thats it. It's a drop in the bucket of the timeline of the game and if you were like me, I never used her because
>using girl characters
So her death felt super uneventful. Plus I could see even back then that Tifa was the love interest for Cloud.

The game tries to force it on you that shes super important, but when they give you party selection options it all feels so forced.

It wouldn't surprise me if they revamped it that Aeris places a way more significant role in the remake, but I wouldn't enjoy it.

I still ship Cloud and Tifa and I've always felt they made a better couple and was more interested in Tifa as a partner for Cloud than Mary Sue Aerith.

I used to have this guide for getting all four dates (Aerith, Tifa, Barret, and Yuffie) and this guy figured it all out and even assigned 'Affection Points' for how much influence your dialogue and party choices have on who you date at Gold Saucer.

I always got Tifa of course, but they rig it so that you'll get Aerith if you're not careful.

One thing in particular that doesn't seem like such a big deal is when you go after Barrett in the Coral Desert. Aerith wants to go and if you put her in the party she gets a shit-ton of affection points for no real reason.

So, yeah, they always tried to force Aerith as the main girl, but Tifa is the choice of scholars and gentlemen.

Im still upset they designed this game where the materia makes the characters outside of limit breaks. Everyone has damaging limit breaks, except the one they remove half-way through the game.

As much as they planned out and tested things in this game, they completely cock tease us with her limit breaks.

>> No.2482168

>>2482132
If you really want to go into it, certain characters have Long Range (Barret, Vincent, Yuffie predominately) and can deal same damage from Back Row and can hit certain flying enemies.

>Getting buttmad about Limit Breaks
You absolutely -have- to grind to get Limit Breaks.
I ended the game with Climhazzard as my highest one. Barret had Grenade Bomb, and Tifa only got to Water kick, she didn't unlock her other level 2 limit, but did unlock her level 3 limit. This is at the end game.

You would have to grind a shitload to get Aeris' Limit Break, and then you can only use it in Temple of the Ancients, and while Temple of the Ancients bosses can be a bit of a difficulty spike, you're given so many tools to deal with them (Fire Ring for Red Dragon for instance), that its a non-issue. If you grinded for Great Gospel, you won't need it, because you'll be over leveled anyways.

I have no issues with "cinematic" experiences in modern games.

If its done well, its enjoyable period. Sure, most of the time its not done that well, with being incredibly scripted segments, but when it is done well, its fantastic and rewarding.

My biggest issue is when your character does cool as shit things in the cutscenes that you can't do in game, or QTEs. Those are pretty much the worst.

It was the first time a death scene was handled with this much gravitas. A character like Tellah dies and everyone is sad for a few seconds, then the game proceeds basically as normal. Aeris dies and it's treated as an earth-shattering event, with slow-motion skewering and even a funeral. And afterward, the living characters keep talking about her and about their grief.

There was no blood though. When the Shinra CEO got killed there was a lot of blood, enough to paint the whole office floor with it.

Now that I think about it, is Cetra physiology completely different than that of regular humans? They don't bleed when cut or stabbed and their dead bodies sink. Not only did Aeris' body sank, she was able to keep her pose as she was sinking. Dead human bodies in water normally float unless weighed down and always look unflattering with their limbs flopping around.

Why she wasn't able to notice the loud sound of shattering glass above her and at least try to dodge Sephiroth's attack? Maybe Cetra has bad hearing too or it could just be specific to Aeris

i dont think enough people really realize this. the most noteworthy thing they did that set them apart from the crowd was better graphics. and even that was all pre-rendered stuff with a low polygon character model layed over it. its really the only logical step up from the overview style in the games that came before it and was ultimately a dead end. not a lot of games employ this today.

They float after the build up of gasses produced from decomposure. A freshly killed corpse will always sink because humans are denser than water.

Nomura likes to joke that he came up with the idea to kill her over the phone. But Sakaguchi apparently lost his mother in between VI and VII and stated something to the effect that death only comes with a feeling of great emptiness and regret.
So maybe Nomura did come up with the game's central point, but it was Sakaguchi's personal tragedy and imput that made it hurt.

Galuf's death is arguably more symbolic than anything, as his skills immediately pass on and the New Warriors fully supplant the Old. But with the flower girl, everything's unfinished and will never be changed.

I think the one thing that bothered me the most about her death is the fact that you don't get her armor back when she dies.

I gave her the Dragon Armlet back at the Temple of Ancients, thinking I was going to have to use her for a while longer, then she runs off, dies, and keeps my stuff. Granted, she only keeps the weapon and armor she has equipped; the game removes her accessory and materia when she bites it.

Still, I was upset enough to reload my Temple of Ancients save to get my armor back, and give her a crappy Iron Bangle in return.
