thanks to the anon who told me that, unlike the first, the sequel has skill levels. thus follows a report for 100% kills on skill 2 (HNTR), pistol starts, no savegames.

1. one death which was my own stupid fault. missed the SSG too, somehow.

2. this was pretty annoying, several deaths usually due to blindsiding by projectiles which can travel Further Than You Think across the map's open design.

3. tricky in places but i somehow got 100% first time. suspect i was lucky. love the theme (pictured)

4. died once. over 2000 monsters is hardly Not Too Rough but you get so much health/ammo it usually doesn't matter. 100% second attempt.

5. very frustrating. amazingly, 3000 monsters counts as Not Too Rough? 30+ minutes to make a significant dent in this number. not terribly hard due to plentiful resources, but still requires what i consider too much planning/tactics for the lowest skill level. the worst part is the teleporting revenant horde at the very end of the map. it surrounds you from without to subvert circle-strafing; instead you must survive inside an angry cloud of missiles, any one of which can remove half your health. dying after 60+ minutes careful play is thoroughly disheartening.

6. this one fails, i'm afraid. i'm sure there's some strategy but the whole point is that the lowest skill level should not require trial and error. plus, later on there are some really obnoxious pillar jumping / crusher sequences too. no way anyone could call this Not Too Rough.

7. an easy 100% first time. seems out of place, maybe intended as a warm-down?

summary: first impression is often "wow how does this count as Not Too Rough?" but it's mostly easier than it looks (with the obvious exception of map06). one pattern emerges: the author consistently underestimates the difficulty of dealing with large crowds of revenants. however, other than that he seems capable of balancing slaughter maps for wider audiences.

Actually, the engine is fine, it's just that two entities are occupying the exact same spot, they're colliding each other, and stuck, telefragging just makes sure that if you teleport into a monster or player, you don't get stuck.

You can replicate the effect by placing two monsters at the exact same spot in a level, the game will run fine but they won't be able to move or attack until one of them are dead.

I see, I too grew up with father who was mostly absent. Can be done, but some father figure is of necessary. Download the mastereffect file in this thread and dick around with the settings. You need the latest version of GZDoom which might not be compatible with your pc though. Any of them that use opengl 3+, which suggests you probably can't use them. There's an older postprocessing pluging called "QEffectsGL" that works for older gzdoom builds though, but I don't remember if that one had ascii filters. It's fun to play around with in any case.

I think a sort of Wolfenstein styled mod set in World War 1 would be very exciting. Could use ZDoom for better modification and level making capability.

Set in earlier days before submachineguns were widely thought to be used, so early you have to choose between pistol or rifle, rifle is powerful, and has a bayonet, but only 5 or 10 round magazine, and must look down sights to make shot that count at any length past point blank. Later in game you get modern nifty German SMG, shoots fast and easy to control, and look, it hold as many as 32 bullets in a Luger pistol Snail Drum!

Doesn't need to be trench warfare, would be very slow and tedious gameplay, could be patterned heavily after Wolfenstein but where you must at times rely on cover, not all the time (that would not be fun), but reloading isn't always fast, and sometimes must face machinegun team who puts out rifle bullet in big volume, run from cover to cover like in action movie, bullets kick up dust and pebbles around feet, get to a place where grenade or bomb can be thrown to take out machinegun pillbox.

Boss can be newfangled tank, player think, "My gods, they put tank in castle, they of not sound mind", and you must find small artillery piece or rifle grenades.

I know of it, and I like parts, but is ultimately rather clumsy in execution, visually crude.
Ending was sad, but acceptable, many died needlessly and were forgotten in the day, Unsung shows this.

I think something larger done in Doom would be much more exciting, not limited to squared off rooms. Not that amazing things has not been done with Wolfenstein 3D (I adore Totenkopf SDL, very fun and moody, makes very most of everything, detail everywhere, not only visual but sound too).

Unsung appealed much to me, but depicting trench war with only one axis has limits.
Hated Mauser rifle in Unsung, off to side and hard to hit with, looked like crude cutout of 3D render. Also had very boring stock sound effect when shooting, get image in head of low expense television show without creative drive and good technical direction. Took me out of game every time. MP-18 was exciting as you never see it in any media, you would think first ever submachinegun would get seen more, yes?

Something done with Doom, with more actual drawn graphics, better animation, less limits on mapping, I think it could be enjoyable.

I think DemonSteele works best on mapsets that have a bunch of wide areas, allowing the player to dodge or duck under enemy fire.
Scythe 2 was the mapset I played the most with it during development I fucking love Scythe 2 and it's practically balanced around it.
People say Going Down is pretty good, but I'm not fond of all the closed areas.
Newgothic is great if your PC is a super-futuristic sci-fi monstrosity that can handle fifty million dudes dying at once.
Alternatively, the Eye is good for a one-map romp.

It's set in Russia during WW1, but doesn't really start off with any military weapons. The dude uses family weapons passed down from his ancestors, so he's got a shortbow and bear spear.
Killing enemies can net you a few guns, though, which are leagues better for obvious reasons, but have limited ammo.

Been having trouble finding good bolt-action rifle sprites, though. Yeah, I could use a non-bolt-action rifle, but come on, bolt action is really cool. It's like pumping a shotgun, it just adds more weight to it.
If all else fails, I guess I could go with a pistol.

Well really there's two problem levels.

The first one is right before the GET OUT OF MY STATION III map where you get teleported right into the middle of a massive clusterfuck of enemies with a Cyberdemon looking down at you.

It's not very hard to just get completely instagibbed and if you do manage to survive teleporting in you're surrounded on all sides.

The last level has kind of the same deal with it's major arena fight, except it comes in waves and you walk into it instead.

But overall the mapset does work from start to finish with a pretty fair balance.

it seemed like a normal day for crew 6B. another demonic invasion had overtaken a base on one of Jupiter's moons. by now nobody could remember what they were all called. but the invulnerable doom marine, saviour of us all, had come in, done his usual job, and was whisked off again. now all that remained was to clean the blood and body parts off the walls and life would return to normal. and it wasn't a bad life, although you were away from your family for 6 months at a time, the pay was very good and you basically had a 6-month holiday at the end of it.

the thought of his family was the last thing on steve's mind as his body was torn apart by the huge teeth of some giant pink thing that had still been lurking behind the coolant towers in the supposedly clear base. doomguy had been lazy, and missed some of them. a normal human armed with nothing but a mop, bucket, and some mildly caustic cleaning fluid, could do nothing but die.

and that is why you should always get 100% kills.

I still think that horror and action should be together as one again. With the modern technology and AI being used to the maximum to make old enemies threatening again.

Doom 3 fucked up the horror aspect because it was forced and inorganic jumpscares. Meanwhile doom 64 focused on horror by keeping the more organic gameplay, but by dressing it up in scary visuals and sounds.

The original games were spooky because the enemies could search through the whole level for you. It's far more organic and tense to know that something is coming and you can't hide. The feeling of vulnerability when you are low on health and ammo is also a major factor.

With Doom 4's movement system they could have made a really badass action-horror game like what doom 1 aspired to be, with pinkies monsters flanking around the player and imps climbing to chase the player as a Baron of Hell soaks up all of your ammo.

Hopefully if we get a full SDK we'll make it into one some day.

Honestly I don't think Dooms arcadey action lends itself well to horror, no matter how much I love them both. Anyway the scariest (not creepiest) game I ever played by far was The Hidden: source many many years ago. It's an MP game where 8 guys playing soldier dudes are supposed to hunt the 1 remaining player who's almost invisible, acrobatic, and armed with a knife and 3 grenades. Against a player who knew how to make distractions and play mind tricks being a soldier was tense enough, but actually being the monster against comptetent players was fucking TERRIFYING. I was playing Berzerk in MAME a little while ago, and despite how simplistic it is in both terms of gameplay and visuals (due to its age of course), hauling ass from robots in maze-like rooms and hoping Evil Otto doesn't pop up still provides an awesome feeling of tension.

This gave me the idea of an 80s-arcade theme WAD. Probably change the Icon of Sin (not romero's head, but the wall) into a giant face of Sinistar, and replace DSBOSSIT with one of its awesome digitized speech samples.

Make the Former Marines/Sergeants into robots using Berzerk sample sounds, and the silver robot guard looking sprites from LameDuke (Duke3D proto).

Humans being transformed is a side effect of their aura, which doesn't affect you because reasons. Hell extremly evil appearance (blood, bones and shit) is due to they to understand human's fears and exploit them. However, they do are violent and destructive due their war ascendance, see their infights, the Evilution ship, overkill in being evil, etc
In Doom 2 they reveal you aren't the only one to resist the malign aura (Earth' survivors who escape in the shuttle resisted too), and you aren't the only one to stand a chance: they simply blitzkrieg'd Mars, but the Earth was somewhat prepared

UAC did literally nothing wrong (but use radioactive shit in an alien planet): things just went off control for them after experimenting with teleportation. It tried to hard to be like TF2 as well. there were a whole shitload of stupid hats and shit that were utterly pointless. You should practice more basic anatomy and learn to picture what you're going to draw in three dimensions rather than two. Using references is a good idea - try drawing simplified wireframe models of people, copying poses from pictures of people doing gymnastics or other dynamic things.

Can anyone provide me with a batman DooM that works fine with GzDoom? the one I have is glitchy as fuck and contains many oddities which are pictured here.

Enemy sprites are mixed up.
Batman fires a gun instead of throwing a batarang ect.
or maybe there's a fix and i'm just retarded.

the test map that was released with DR class v6.0 is gone.

I come to /vr/ in hopes that they have that one map. For completionist sakes. I do believe the wad was called something like "testmap.wad" or something that came with the DR Class v 6.0 wad,

The original author also lost this map so I think he would be rather gracious if someone had a copy of this map,

pic related. It is from the tv in the map file that would change on the player 'using' that tv. I would (and probably the original author.) would apprieciate it if the map was found.

My only clue on where it is in the original DR class v6.0 zip that was released some time ago astestmap zip map.zip or .pk3,

This is the pic of a tv in a living room of sorts that will change when the player tries to uses it as a door.

some other things in the map:
A shooting range in the backyard with a single cyberdemon.
A building near a pit that is next to that shooting range,
An indoor area with the pic related TV and some rooms on the 2nd floor.

I know it is a slim chance anyone here has that old map file, but if anyone has it, I think me, and the original author and any purist/archivist would greatly appreciate it if you can upload it for us to play on it again.
