Playing this for the first time, and does it get better? I keep hearing about it's one of the essential SNES RPGs, but I just found out about Lavos, and so far it's been pretty by the numbers.

It created those numbers and if those numbers already existed, Chrono Trigger's went over them with permanent marker

literally just play the game; don't post, don't ask questions, just play the game. When you're done you'll say wow, this was a great game. Which version are you playing btw? I played the DS version and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nah, it's pretty terrible, you should skip straight to Chrono Cross. That has a much better story and sums up the events of Trigger anyways.

I didn't like it, I'm just never going to like a jRPG that's not a dungeon crawler I guess. If you generally like other jRPGs then you're probably just jaded.

i didnt care for it much. no character specialization or class system or anything at all really, all it had going for it were some lackluster combos. im not talking shit about it, its ok by all means but nothing out of the ordinary (and dont tell me it set a new standard because ff3 was way better and way earlier)

>> No.2480419

It's just a well-made game, nothing more. Not the crown jewel of the SNES JRPG library, but fun nonetheless.

Play it, beat it, don't suck its cock.

Well, what do you expect. Any time there's a thread about a game that most people consider to be one of the GOAT you can almost guarantee there'll be some contrarian fag who lives only to go against popular opinion for the sake of seeming more intelligent than he actually is.

Not him, but have you ever stepped outside your basement and actually *looked* at Square's storytelling and gameplay? Both are linear, both are one-dimensional, both are predictable as fuck. The tropes were tired before Square picked them up, and CT was hardly their first use. Or even their fifth.

The game as a whole, however, is superb, and IU fell the anon you were getting salty at would agree. Amazingly comfy, perfectly executed, brilliantly scored - it really tugs the heartstrings. Everyone should play it once, it really is that good. But to call it innovative or original is just /vr/ autism.

>>2480216
It only gets better from Zeal onwards. The bulk of the game is a chore to play through. 2300AD and 65 million BC are undoubtedly the worst segments, though.

>> No.2481678

>>2481438
I think that's a pretty superficial analysis. Chrono Trigger may not be wholly original, but neither is anything else under the sun. CT may have relied on a lot of old tropes but it also introduced a lot of new things, especially here in the west. For a lot of Americans, it was the first JRPG that didn't have gridlocked, boxy characters, where battles were fought in the field, where the atmosphere was more like a modern comedy anime than a fantasy epic, etc.

And don't forget that masterfully combining a lot of disparate elements is a kind of innovation in itself.

I played chronotrigger for the first time a year or two ago.
Once you get past the first 2300AD segment and get into magic use, the game begins to really unravel. I didn't have a problem with it up till then by any means, it's just not where chronotrigger really shines at it's brightest.
Once you get past that, the game is absolutely 10/10 amazing for the most part as it branches out and gives out feels.

I haven't played cross, but I hope it's not like how mass effect games "recap" the previous game for newbies. It can't be much worse.

idk what to say OP, it blew my ass off right from the start. Battles that take place on the field, placement matters for some attacks, the sprites, and the story, it's the perfect package.

It wont ruin Chrono Trigger and it isn't bad. It's just lackluster.

It isn't really a sequel, which is why it gets a lot of hate. There are people who dislike it because it isn't Chrono Trigger, nor is it really a sequel to it. Still, it's not a *bad* game...

...it just isn't incredibly good like Chrono Trigger was. Even if you go into it with a fresh mind and you don't expect it to be Chrono Trigger, you'll probably be disappointed by disc 2. It has a fantastic first few hours of the game and is very, very good. After that though, it decides that it wants to do something else and it just becomes incongruent with what it has already established. Worse than that, after it has had its fill of that stint, it decides to throw some stupid lore at you that seems out of left field, then that lore becomes the focus of the game. Worse still, it is around that point that the game decides that it *does* actually want to be a sequel to Chrono Trigger!

Like the other anon said though, it does have the best game soundtrack of all time

>> No.2481817

>>2481787
The main weird thing is that it's the chrono trigger universe in name only. For a while into the game you wouldn't even know it's connected to CT.

It's still fun if you like pre-rendered RPGs.
