Due to the recent reboot announcement, this has piqued my interest in MoO, which I've never played either game. How are they? Why the MoO vs MoO 2 debate? Why do I hear MoO 3 was bad?

>Recent reboot announcement

Just fucking kill me already holy shit.

1 and 2 are amazing, there is no debate. Good luck getting the music in 1 to work on modern systems though, which is a damn shame.

MoO 3 was shite because different developer if memory serves me right.

Basically, think Alpha Centauri. Rather than a grid of squares, it's seperate star systems. The unit design screen is more like say, Mechwarrior 3, and there's characters you can stick into your ships and planets. And custom factions.

Not at all. Fingers crossed they don't fuck it up.

>Why the MoO vs MoO 2 debate?
MoO has a really simple charm to it and yet all the mechanics kind of flow together in a pretty synergistic way.

MoO throws away MoO's kind of unique mechanics for a more standarized approach similar to Civ/MoM where you have drag and drop worker management, buildings to improve your colony, research beakers and so on.

Lots of additional complexity such as customization races but they aren't always for the best.

I suggest playing both of them - it's not like say, Heroes of Might and Magic 1-3 where there's a clear upgrade progression from 1-3. For all intents and purposes, they may as well be 2 games taking different paths

>Why do I hear MoO 3 was bad?
Really botched execution, which was the fate of many strategy game series of the day, it seems (such as HoMM 4)

Also, acutal MoO 3 is Endless Space.

The music works fine on my Win7 Laptop. Not sure how it would on 8 or higher though.

Yes, it was hardly a MOO game.
>>2463925
Neither is really better as they're just different enough to where you can't compare them fairly. If you like more simplistic gameplay, MOO is probably better while MOO would work for some more in-depth play.

I have the music working on 1. I use the original files with dosbox. works a treat (on windows 8)

I prefer 1 to 2 myself. more simple and to the point. very graceful game.

Half-finished game rushed out the door. It's not nearly that bad if you get the fan patches.

It also really hurt it that it was a macromanagement game in a much-loved series of micromanagement games.

Inspired by the news, I actually tried the first MoO for the first time in my life this weekend when I got it from GoG. Before that I've played MoO 2 as a kid. Great fun, I kinda like the simple mechanics of the first game but then again I also like the complexicity of the second game.

What's your favourite custom race build, /vr/? I myself have been experimenting with a race that has +1 BC and can buy expensive things like battleships right away rather than building them from scratch.

In my last game I picked the following:

+Unification
+Large Home World
+Telepathic
+Warlord
-Ground Combat -10
-Low Gravity

I love having Telepathic and Warlord. Warlord lets me build a lot of ships early while also helping my ships win against enemies at equal tech level, and with Telepathy I can instantly assimilate a population into my Unification with no need for transports. Fortunately, in that game my closest neighbor were the Bulrathi (Repulsive, Tolerant) who seemed to be teching really slowly, so I was able to mind control myself a decent production population as soon as my first Battleships were out. Could've gotten them even sooner with Cruisers, but the Antarans wrecked my first fleet right when I was about to attack.

For the record though, I only play against Impossible AIs so I'm not even trying to do a viable multiplayer build.

how on earth would it being a game in the correct genre for the series hurt the game? I don't get it...

well this is surprising for a game like this.. if they aren't going to drastically change what type of genre it is that is even more surprising since these sort of games simply don't even get made anymore.

Not quite fond of the card game styled battles, though.

Just played StarDrive 2 fairly recently, and it comes really close to MoO2.

When it came out, a good friend of mine got me hooked on it by describing it as follows:
Friend: "Imagine a game where you can create any sci-fi race you have ever imagined. Maybe it doesn't look the same, but you can have it all."
Me: "Even the borg?"
Him: "Yes, even them."
Me: "I must play this."

You don't really need all those techs, spending those 8 picks elsewhere can be much more useful.

MOO2 isn't very well-balanced and generally each level of tech has 1 useful choice and 2 useless one.

Which is the reason why UNcreative is so crippling - you're basically praying to roll way above the average in order to not be screwed over by having your only option be a useless one.

Creative's fun to play with, but nowhere near an optimal pick. A research build can certainly work but Creative isn't a part of it.

Of course, MOO2's AI is eventually not going to pose a threat as you become good at the game, so really, play whatever race you like.

>>2473496

my favorite race is a Subterranian/Aquatic combo for massive population. My minus picks fluctuate if I'm only taking +50 pop, uni, demo or creative if I want to have fun. Sometimes I take uncreative/spying 20 for technology roulette and fun.

Pussy. That's probably the cheapest trait in the game.

I like to think of it as a convenience pick. It doesn't help you research techs or build ships any faster, but it makes invasions much less of a hassle if you do manage to defeat the defending fleet.

I started playing MOO last night and its pretty fun. But after a while whenever I tried to move large groups of ships the game just froze.
I am running the gogbox version.
Anyone know why this happens?

Master of Orion 1?

Try the unofficial patch and see if it fixes things.
