How come nobody talks about this game? All I kept hearing about it was "Ugly Graphics" but I'm having a pretty great time with it.

Sountrack's pretty good, it's no Wave Race but it's nice nontheless.

The New York track has some pretty good wave work going on, and I like the fact that you can hear the cop cars and the subway passing by.

I also hear the characters show up in Shenmue 2 as figurines, that's pretty cool.

aaaahh good job.
Added Shenmue UNDUB by smith and RDC
795mb .cdi 3 disks

The Revive DC final undub version: Optimized, PAL Region, JP Speech/ENG Subs, CDDA, Complete

its PAL with JP sub hack, the kogami CD2 seems to be bugged and suffers random dissaperaing NPC and bugged cutscenes because no actors are loaded.

Cheers, bro. That spreadsheet was done on the previous thread, and I think someone made a post with a couple more releases, actually.

See, I don't think the game is as ugly as people put it, specially considering it was a launch title. The one other track I really like was Alaska, since that one had a shitton of alternate paths.

I just don't see why it can't share the spot of "fun water racing game" along with Hydro Thunder is all.

Basically the format for an original Dreamcast game is a GD-ROM, which had about 1 GB of storage space. Regular discs are 700mbs so there are some losses when converting the GD-Roms into cdi, specially by a lot of groups.

ReviveDC is pretty much the best release group around that had most of their releases be near or completely lossless. But the author had a shit-fit and decided to take all of the releases out because "quality" issues or something. So people here have been re-uploading stuff.

Cool.

Pirating is super easy (if you have a CD Burner and $5 for a 50 pack of CDRs you are set).

How many VMUs did you get? They only store 200 blocks, which can run out quick. Some games use 4 blocks, some games use 80 blocks, so having more always helps.

This spreadsheet was originally intended for only RDC packs, as they did a bang up job. Other self-boot collections might be messy on the laser especially, so I'm very wary of wanting them in it.
Please feel free to make another sheet for non-RDC releases, which we can sort alphabetically and leave comments on.

OP here. Aw man, first of all thank you so much for starting that spreadsheet up the previous thread and thanks everyone for helping out! I was so worried when I found out that RDC had gone kaput, specially because I wanted to play their army men release.

And yeah sorry about the other release types, I really wasn't thorough enough about that, but I hope it can be sorted out.

>No-BS might warrant its own sheet as well. If I'm not mistaken, these are essentially 100% rips with nothing downsampled or removed.

Yeah! I'm really interested in getting the Shenmue release particularly since it seems nothing was downsampled in that one. I've sent the guy a lot of PM's asking him for that and his latest NFO file but no reply so far.

>Off the top of my head, I'd first go troubleshoot the VGA cable and then the connector on the box. Test them independently to determine which is at fault.

The VGA cable itself works fine, no bent pins or anything like that. But I think it's the box because last time I put an S-video cable it was very finnicky

And good luck with the DX! I hear their assembly number is the same so all of their batches suck ass.

A couple of ReviveDC releases:

Cosmic Smash: https://mega.nz/#!CVxhxR6C!mvjVMSBnY0Tvwj3TUjNukpk1Gi492N0ikulv0daUh0Y

Ferrari F355 Challenge: https://mega.nz/#!acBDyboa!LNLVmbSaktkDv8Qf9gY7Zd1YhtCGC1WQg2jZJoUuV1E

And here's a couple quality cracks from other groups:

Re-Volt (No Bullshit): https://mega.nz/#!acBDyboa!LNLVmbSaktkDv8Qf9gY7Zd1YhtCGC1WQg2jZJoUuV1E

Zero Gunner 2 (atreyu187): https://mega.nz/#!SJYwyRDQ!7VqXTRMmogHKGkVTIP6bSGjRn7fjlpzxP9tQJxXYV3A

Why is the Shenmue translation so shit? It's super literal in places, I started with the undub to avoid the shitty english voice acting, but found the text just as bad. In Japanese, you can repeat the same shit over and over without it sounding weird, but in English the style of asking everyone about black suits just stands out like a sore thumb.

I'm legit just thinking of throwing the game on the backburner for another year until I get a better grasp of nip vocab.

So I know some of you guys say that there are no better releases than ReviveDC, but have any of you heard of DCRes?

It was a pet project from some brazillian guy on Snesorama.us when it was still pretty big, and he really seemed to know what he was doing. He'd use dummy files, high quality downsampling, stuff like that. I think he didn't quite get the weird no-audio games like Virtua Cop 2 to work, but just about everything else was golden with him. He even put out some split disc releases of stuff that he really liked that either didn't have any downsampling or used other versions of games for source material (His Space Channel 5 split used the PS2 movies, for example).

I have the 80 or so GB torrent of his shit if anyone's interested. Post a 10 minute mail address and I'll ship over a link to the torrent. I haven't seeded it in awhile, but I can reseed if anyone's interested. IIRC, ReviveDC came after DCRes.

Man, why is DC emulation so shit?

Don't get me wrong, many of may games work just fine and I appreciate all the time and effort that the developers put into their emulators, but it has been so long now and there still are huge issues with a lot of titles.

Look at the Dolphin emulator community. Very coordinated with a huge amount of developers making huge contributions to the emulator, and improving game compatibility every single day.

I just wish the DC scene was more like that.

Never heard of OCing, but it'll theoretically increase framerate and responsiveness. It depends on what you're overclocking, though, as if a game is bottlenecked by the graphics hardware, you won't see an improvement by OCing tha CPU.

As for VGA modding, it'd allow you to use VGA output without the external box attachment.

The 80min releases are for standard 700mb CD-Rs. The 99min releases are for special, extra-capacity 900mb CD-Rs that are hard to find usually have to be special-ordered.

Is Shenmue playable from an SD card using Dreamshell yet? That's $20 plus the cost of an SD card if they're 100% compatible.

Honestly if you're looking for physical copies of Shenmue I and II on the DC it might be better just to put that money toward a GDEMU instead, this way you could play every single DC game in a lossless fashion. You'd get to enjoy 100% perfect versions of every single Dreamcast game as well as fuck over reseller scum at the same time, so it would be a win/win if you were comfortable spending the $130.

Why not mock some sort of small site up using redis as a database and Python with FLASK or Javascript for the frontend?

I was going to make a share database a long time ago, and it's really not too bad. Redis is dead simple and using it with Python is too.

Make a list of games by the release group, make a list of games overall, make a list of release groups, and just load them into lists in Python and manipulate it that way.

If there's an interest, I have a server I can host it on for the time being if someone is up to the task.

Hey, comradesnarky here from ReviveDC. Attached picture should do enough to prove that, hopefully. I’m not quite sure how else I could prove it’s actually me.

Anyways, I wanted to explain why exactly the ReviveDC files were removed from TIZ and what my feelings were on the quality of them. I never wanted to make it seem like I was pulling a Xiaopang and taking my toys and playing by myself.

First, we learned a lot from when we started ReviveDC to when we finished. Early rips are not very good. There’s a lot of inconsistencies, and I think that gloating got us a better reputation than we deserved. I know that some files by other members had backwards sort orders and other problems. In the start I was the one who knew the least about selfbooting a commercial game, and I didn’t really have a full grasp on everything that should be in place for quality control.

I see that some people picked up on NoBS-DC…well, those were meant to be the replacements for ReviveDC. I’ve been making those, and I haven’t stopped making them in the time that TIZ’s file hosting has been down either. I just haven’t uploaded them anywhere yet. So there’s quite a few of those waiting to come out. I was wanting to just sort of do NoBS-DC quietly and not have my name attached to it. I think ego was a problem in RDC, and I just wanted it to be neutral. Cut and dry “here’s the game, this was ripped, have fun” type stuff.

A lot of the ReviveDC links went down with TIZ’s servers that went offline. Frankly, I’ll be shocked if many of those files are recovered. I decided to just remove them and work on NoBS-DC stuff in the meantime. I realize that a lot of people like the art for ReviveDC stuff, but the negative side effect is that there have been a lot of people selling reproduction games for truly ridiculous prices. I was planning on creating a separate art archive for what was done with RDC to make up for that.

(continued)

>> No.2498840

>>2498838

The next matter is what the status of the RDC stuff and NoBS-DC is.

Well, I’m sure you guys have seen Anthony817 floating around on every Dreamcast site talking about how he’s such a great supporter of the Dreamcast and the “scene” while doing literally nothing. I posted a message on Shenmue Dojo to SMiTH as I wanted to discuss the Shenmue Undub and getting a new version out. There’s some hiccups with the RDC release that can be easily fixed, and I wanted to ask if he would release it under his name. In that post, I mentioned that I had removed the RDC images from TIZ.

Long story short, a few months prior we (the TIZ mods) banned Anthony817 because of how he was treating users and behaving. He didn’t have any idea about NoBS-DC, and saw this as an opportunity to get at me. He messaged the TIZ admin about this, and the admin demodded me and made a forum post talking about how I had nuked the whole Dreamcast section and was a piece of shit more or less. Obviously, I hadn’t nuked the whole DC section; only the ReviveDC stuff. The logs showed ALL of my deletes over the time of keeping the section cleaned up from duplicates as much as I could. To the admin, it looked like I nuked about 350 files in one go. Of course there were nowhere near that many ReviveDC releases.

Instead of discussing the situation with the mods (or even looking at the mod forum, where I had posted several months prior about replacing RDC stuff with NoBS-DC), that was it. So, modding there for a few years and I’m sure helping out the admin’s revenue stream greatly got me… nothing. I didn’t expect anything, but I didn’t expect that either. He asked that I upload the files to the new host, but I recommended that he attempt to restore the ReviveDC files as I was done with the site after that.

>> No.2498841

>>2498840
(continued again)

So, the RDC files should be back on TIZ at some point. As far as NoBS-DC and other piracy related things I’ve been working on, I’m pretty clueless as to where that’s going to go. If anyone has any recommendations for sites, I’m open to them.

I’m sorry that this all didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped in regards to just getting as clean of a transition done as possible.

>> No.2498846

To be honest I figured it was some sort of dumb scene drama shit. Most people here were worried that games and rips would get "lost" to time thanks to both the downtime of cloudstores at iso zone (the only decent place for dreamcast games nowadays) and the removal of ReviveDC. Cuz as long as we can get our hands on the "best" rips of these games, I doubt we care about who it comes from.

It's nice to finally hear someone from ReviveDC comment on the situation. Sounds kind of messed up but I guess there's nothing to do but move on.

You could upload on Emuparadise and if there's enough of them eventually to make a big pack maybe look into Pleasuredome. For now, if you're sitting on some games it would be lovely if you'd pack them up on Mega and post theme here as well. One way or the other, keep up the good job.

It would have been a shame to see all of that hard work disappear, which is why everyone was freaking out.

Clarifying everything! And wow, I should've made the connection before between RDC and NoB-DC. I was the one that sent you a couple of PM's asking about the latest .nfo you had since those releases were really badly scattered.

As everyone here says, the important thing is that we at least managed to get a bit of a backup going on, so if you can take the time to add some of the RDC we lack and the NoBS ones (Like the Shenmue one which I hear is one of the best ones for the NSTC versions), I think would be a very good start. Again, thanks for the great work regardless of whatever happened.

And thanks everyone for the support!

>> No.2498921

>>2498889

At this point I don't think it matters how it happens, because the alternative is no Shenmue 3. If they have to be a bit unethical about it than I'm ok with it if it means two years from now I'll get to have awkward conversations with people, collect capsule toys, and hopefully punch Lan Di in the dick. Yu had been planning on a kickstarter for years anyway, so all I see it as is him jumping on a chance to crank the broadcast signal up to eleven.

The only real downside is that legitimate copies of Shenmue and Shenmue II spiked in price the instant the announcement was made, but that's pretty normal (Silent Hill prices spiked after the movie came out, but I think they normalized after a couple years, for example). Things like Dreamshell and GDEMU will only get better and cheaper over time, so if you want to actually play the games instead of just collect them I don't think the price increase will be too bad if you are patient.

Losing UG was a goddamn heartbreak. It was the videogaming Library of Alexandria. I lucked into registering when they had a couple of open slots so I could burn some games for my freshly modded (with an old Racketboy chip) Saturn at the time and it just so happened to be the start of a Golden Torrent Week. I seeded my ass off and as a result my ratio was "infinite" for a while.

I remember grabbing ancient Echelon rips with their awful intros and hearing my Dreamcast's laser sound like a chainsaw as it slowly loaded whatever game I was playing. We've come a long way since then.

I figured I may as well ask here.

I've been using Composite cables on my dreamcast and finally I've decided that I should get on this VGA train for it. Most of the boxes I find are in the $45+ price range and I think that's a bit too much. I did find this Tomee cable for $20 and, while the Amazon reviews look good, 1 reviewer on Youtube said nobody under any circumstances should buy the Tomee cables and that shelling out money for a VGA box is a much better option. Is it really worth spending more for a VGA box? If so, what VGA box should I get then?

>> No.2500390

>>2500374
I think there's been a few people talking about the cables here and so far, it hasn't gotten any bad reception. The box is there mostly to have the option of actually using something like a CRT monitor which already has a VGA cable, and having the option of s-video output and an audio jack output. The VGA output is native for the dreamcast so it shouldn't matter that much.

I'm personally getting cable since I already have a retro bit box, which as I mentioned before has had some issues with the audio jack making interference, but that's a manufacturing issue I think, but otherwise works just fine.

I hear some brands like Toro are better if a bit pricey, and also the actual first party vga box which is fairly expensive too.

It was a tighter fit, but I didn't have to "Take apart my controller to get them out". He also said the D pad was awful, but in fighting games like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, I preferred it over the Dreamcast controller.

At the most some games have downsampled video/audio. Any .nfos (do we have those in the spreadsheet somewhere?) will detail what exactly got downsampled. Any game under like, 600MB or so compressed will likely be the full, untouched game. Larger games unfortunately do need some tweaking and shit to fit on an 80minute disc, but a lot of 99minute versions exist, if you can get your hands on high capacity CD-Rs.

But... I'm up to work on something. I like how vndb is structured and what information that playstation database (psx datacenter) has in it. If there could be (or is) a lightweight, functional version around dreamcast with share links (pointing to wherever.. even IsoZone or similar sites), that would be my ideal setup.

In terms of data structure, what would be the best file format for handling atomic changes, for contribution? ex: I could represent a logical design in a PNG coming from a source xcf or vsd(x) file, but how would that fare with a git repository and multiple contributors?
