Has a game ever scared/shocked you so much that you immediately shut it off or ran out of the room?

When I played A Bug's Life on N64 back when I was a kid, I had a crippling phobia of bees and wasps. Whenever the wasp enemies showed up, I started panicking, hyperventilating, and freaking out. When I turned a corner and saw one flying right at me I just shut the system off and never played it again.

Never, although sometimes when I played alone at night as a kid some games would randomly glitch out and that kind of scared me, but I just reseted the console.

I haven't been *that* scared of a game but Shao Kahn's laugh and the gritty dark environment were pretty creepy to me as a child.

I was five or six at the time.

Is this general fear encounters, or fear encounters that are relatively irrational?

Because I had a hell of a time trying to force myself to play chex quest as a kid. I would literally go through the first 2 doors, and have to psych myself up to opening the door I knew contained the first monster. usually I'd just restart hundreds of times.

>> No.2469346

The '99 Aliens vs. Predator terrifies me to this day, I have never completed the marine campaign because I get extremely nervous and have to quit.
Other Aliens games have similar effects, even the Aliens TC for Doom is fucking scary.
I don't know what it is about the Xenomorph specifically but they're the stuff of nightmares. Brilliant horror design.

The facehuggers are actually maybe the most terrifying monster I can think of, I had many moments where I restarted the mission because one of those fuckers got too close to me.

This fucking music triggered me fucking hard. It got so bad that I could only play the top floors of the level for a few minutes and then I had to run down to the basement where that circus music was playing ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW3noZzIIj4& ) and it would calm me down for a few seconds. And I was already terrified of circus and clowns to begin with, but it was a lesser evil. When I mustered up the courage I would go up again for as long as I could withstand it and then go back down again to recharge the courage.

Boo's Haunted House scared the living shit out of me, but quite legitimately scared. I couldn't for the life of play that fucking level, I could only play it during the day and I could only barely stand it. I remember one day I tried playing it during the night and was legitimately freaking the fuck out to the point that I shut down the console and went running straight to bed, but there was a problem. The consoles weren't in my room, they were in my playroom upstairs, and I had to make my way down to my room. But the logistics of it were complicated, the light switch wasn't near the door, they were far away on the other way of the room and long away from the stairs. Which meant that I had to turn off the lights and make my way through a dark room and go down a dark flight of stairs. I was already afraid of the dark (I used to think that if I stayed in a dark place Jesus' ghost would come and haunt me, church really fucked with my head) but adding my freak out session with the game I was absolutely terrified at that point of turning off the lights and make my way down in the dark for just a few seconds. I'm not sure if I actually managed to turn off the lights and run my way down scared shitless or actually just let the lights on all night, but I do remember pondering both possibilities. I wasn't that young either, I was probably 11 or 12 at that point.

Goddamn I was such a scaredy cat back then.

Might a well ask here: What are some atmospheric and good horror or spooky games that are /vr/ approved?

I've already played and loved all (retro) Castlevanias, Resident Evil, Silent Hills, etc. The last game that gave me that spooky enjoyenment was Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi that's still pretty kickass to this day.

Bonus for PC or GBA games or Lovecraftian stuff.

After I beat Spiderman on the Dreamcast, I looked up some cheat codes and found one that activated "Watcher mode", which said that you could replay the game slightly differently. I didn't know anything about the Marvel universe that I didn't learn from the Spiderman and X-Men cartoons, and I had no idea who the Watcher was.

I activated it and started a new game, but nothing seemed different. Until Level 2, when a white-eyed, gaunt figure in a cloak suddenly appeared in a cutscene, half phased through a brick building. He was staring directly at me through the tv screen, and announced in a loud voice "I AM THE WATCHER."

I was home alone and panicked. I paused the game, turned off the TV, and waited until mom got home to start playing again. I was probably 10 or 11 then.

The first Medievil was much creepier than you would imagine by looking at the boxart, like, really creepy.

It's a weird combination of sound effects, zombie moans, stilted animations and music, even though Sir Dan is one of the cutest characters ever created I was still pretty nervous when I played it back in the days, I mean, that game scared me more than Alone in The Dark or Silent Hill for some reason, some levels are just goddamn spooky.

Silent Hill on the ps1.
Once I got to the corpse in the first scene, noped the fuck out.
The game still creeps me to this day (farthest I've got is the second time in the hospital but lost the savegame), I mean, the atmosphere is well done, and every camera angle is calculated to make you paranoid.

Ecco the Dolphin was pretty scary. I was especially scared of "Open Ocean," which is just a MASSIVE level of nothing but emptiness. I don't know, man, that shit is freaky.

I also heard, as a small kid, that if you glitch Metroid you can access rooms and rooms of maps that don't exist in the actual game. But they were well-composed, as if someone had intended to include them but they got cut off. Yet, if you go through the wrong door, the game will just crash. (This rumor is actually partly true. If you glitch the game you can access distorted versions of existing maps).

I also thought that Silent Hill 2 was spooky, even though I played it for the first time recently as an adult.

For some reason in Phantom 2040 for sega genesis. I would freak out and shut off my console when ever the yellow sewer rose up. It had a scary sound to me and I just couldn't handle it.
