>Arcades, at least in the USA have become a rare sight
>People still like arcades, especially the 20 to 35 crowd
>Barcades are a big seller
>Arcades aren't profitable. One main reason is power consumption.

With all the advances in technology, why haven't they made classic style arcades that don't consume a lot of power?

Now I know this is blasphemy to a lot of you but stick with me. Why not put little PC's in an arcade cabinet and emulate the game? Licensing wouldn't be a huge issue if the game company got their share.

Am I missing something? Did the time of the arcade truly pass in the states?

There's a little place in downtown Atlanta called Joystick that is a bar with a dozen machines or so, but yes, arcades in the states are dead. I didn't fully realize until I went to Japan and saw how many there were there.

Isn't half the appeal of an arcade the fact that you're playing on original vintage machines?

Barcades are about combining alcohol and nostalgia (or false nostalgia in some cases).

How would you know though? The barcade I go to has a lot of younger adults in it that wouldn't know the real cab from a fake one.

Shame. Seems like a missed opportunity if you had extra space and some wood working/tech skills.

>> No.2458930

>>2458918
Most probably wouldn't, but it seems like a huge pain in the ass to make a fake, instead of just using the machines already at your disposal.

Seems like they'd rather use the profit to buy cheap machines with shit games than go through the hassle of emulation. I doubt the owners of most barcades have even a clue about the machines to begin with.

Agreed, online gaming and LAN gaming in net cafes killed it. Arcades made the most sense to play 2-player games like Street Fighter 2. When you take off the rose-tinted glasses arcades were also a ripoff and predatory, there was a slot machine affect with them. Buy the game and play it forever.

A place near my home here in Mexico has an arcade cabinet with what I swear is a moded Xbox 360 full of ISOs, although I might be wrong. It has a lot of modern games AND classic games. The other day I saw 2 kids, no older than 7, playing co-op The Simpsons Arcade Game

How do you think they're making money? Here's a clue: it's not from games. The only way for an arcade in the US to be profitable is to sell alcohol. Of course that comes with its own set of problems, but it's still highly profitable.

>> No.2459376

>>2459349
No idea, I'm not too knowledgeable about it, I've just seen kids play a lot of different types of games on it, it also used to have a 360 controller out, but the owner recently changed it to a regular arcade stick. It's a small shop that sells miscellaneous edibles and household stuff, the arcade machine they got is just an extra since there's a lot of kids living in the area. I've never bothered to ask the owner either, it just brings a smile to my face when the kids choose the Simpsons arcade or TMNT Turtles in Time.

>> No.2459387

The last time I went to some kiddie amusement place with my nephew I saw a cabinet with dozen or so older arcade games on it. I wish I had paid more attention to it, but I remember seeing a bunch of Capcom games. It was either emulation of a CPS I/II with a bunch of games shoehorned on there somehow.

They aren't frequented anymore because people are on to their shit. These days I go through them looking for people on head-to-head games to play those with them. I haven't caught anyone on them in years and the whole arcades are usually mostly empty. The only reason I think there are still 3 at Ocean City are dumb Eastern European menial workers.

>They aren't frequented anymore because people are on to their shit.

No that's not it. At least that's not the main reason. It was the fact that consoles got to the point when they were good enough to match or exceed the same game in the arcade. I remember playing Soul Caliber on the Dreamcast for the first time thinking "holy shit this is as good as the arcade". Why go to the arcade after that?

>> No.2459891

People paid money for arcade games back then because you could never afford the hardware. Now days they're using PC hardware that anyone can afford then not releasing arcade games on PC. It's not that Americans are to lazy, we'll wait hours in line for a cheap amiibo. It's that arcades are obsolete. Anyone that would go to an arcade for fun, has all the stuff they need at home already. Then if it's a place like dave and busters, it's $2 for a play on sonething like the Mario Kart game. Why spend $10 for 5 races when you can have 4 people playing on a couch for the price of Mario Kart 8? I can't speak for Japanese arcades but I know the most popular games are ones that a person can't own.

Xboxes usually have fitted some external timer circuitry that lets them play for something like 5-10 mins per coin/credit. There is also a number of PCs (in arcade cabinets) running a front end made to look like the Xbox dashboard with PC games, console ports, emulators and other shit (saw one that played music videos once...).

And it goes way back really. Back in the 90s there were many ghettorigged NES/SNES/Genesis cabs with timers like that. That was the first time I saw one of those Chinese 999 in 1 carts, haha.

Yes, but I literally mean it was one of those old TVs with UHF/VHF knobs inside the cab, behind a piece of plexiglass (didn't even bother with a bezel, haha). The pad PCBs were soldered to regular arcade controls, the NES and timer out of sight in the lower part and overall it looked the part, but the TV was just lazily put there so it was all dusty, off center and slightly turned to the side.

Most weren't that halfassed, but it was usually apparent they weren't official.
