Semi-related to the OP image, I came across a graphic hack for SMW that changes the art to use assets from All-Stars and Yoshi's Island. I've always thought that SMW had a weak art style in comparison to the other SNES Mario games so this is pretty nice to see.

I looked at the list posted above and checked google... but I am not having any luck.

Are there any Genesis hacks that aren't of Sonic games? There are several games I would like to see get something but it just seems like no one is interested in them like they are the NES and SNES. Is it a matter of difficulty or just lack of interest?

Ideally it wouldn't just be a reskin of something but a complete overhaul like Parallel Worlds or Super Metroid Redesign.

There are several games that I feel could really benefit and have new life breathed into them.

This here is an interesting little hack. Ultimately, very little ends up being changed, and Norfair ends up becoming a much friendlier place in the process, but the different route you have to take after beating Kraid is a nice mix-up. (Don't let the tube room fool you, you're supposed to head up into Maridia after beating Kraid.) Also a little challenging, because you have very little health and Maridia enemies do huge damage when you only have the Varia suit.

Anyone here familiar with PSX game script extraction?

I'm playing around trying to extract the Japanese script of Wild Arms. I created a hex -> kanji table file and can extract lines just fine. Problem is, between different portions of the game they reassign different characters to some of those hex values, so I'd have to update my table accordingly, and to do that I'd have to figure out where and how they reassign those values. Or I guess manually go over every line, see if it looks fucked, navigate to that portion in-game and see what characters are supposed to be there.

Is this shit common for PSX games, or did I just pick the worst game possible for this?

I think most powerups are ported too but the tool/patch is pain in the ass to use, and the other/new one isnt finished yet.

I'm a frequent lurker on /vr/, but I never thought to post this here before. A few years ago, I made a patch of Grond's Final Fantasy that improved the graphics, and initially whored it out on GameFAQs. I doubt I'll go back to working on it any time soon, but it's fairly complete. Check it out:

Not sure if there's any interest, but I have a rebalancing hack for Final Fantasy Legend 1 that aims to make the game more difficult. Many of the boss stats are pumped up, but transformable monster stats are left alone.

I've also slipstreamed some other changes into the patch, like bugfixes and grammar / translation fixes done by other parties.

https://www.sendspace.com/file/dqwizf

I've played through the hack several times with different party combinations, so I'm confident any combination can beat the game. I even managed to beat it with a solo character.

Hey, I'm really enjoying all of the MSU1 hacks coming out, but why does everyone make the volume adjustment a separate patch?

Is the volume hard-coded in the ROM so a menu couldn't be ASM'd in? One game in particular, Top Gear 2, even has volume options in the menu already, but obviously they have no effect when using MSU sound.

Or even better, could we just normalize the volume between the emulators and SD2SNES?

Lunar Magic came out years before byuu's autistic anti-header crusade. Good roms straight to/from the copier had them, so it made sense to keep them.

The important part is consistency. If LM didn't force everybody to stick to one all the SMW hackers would randomly pick whatever rom they had on hand. Half the patches out there would break your rom and the other half would break the other rom. If you applied a bunch of patches you'd potentially have to flip flop between headered, unheadered, unheadered, headered, and good luck keeping them all straight.

And to counter-act your other points: Essence Star has good palettes, diverse environments, music that works well on the SNES (emulated) hardware, and best of all, level variety.

As far as I've seen of Gives Up, the palettes are unchanged World palettes, every level has been grass plain or beach (very uninteresting) or generic gfx ripped from Secret of Mana 2, music that is just "song from another game" which sound shit when converted to meet hardware requirements, and every level has just been "go left and jump on things" -granted that's the basic Mario Formula, except games like Essence Star like to add a bit of exploration and occasional backtracking.

Bit of a long shot but this is the right thread for it.

I've been trying for the last few weeks to hack The Weakest Link for the PS1. All I want to do is change a few textures and a sound file. My gf was on the show a few years back and I want to put her in the game. She plays it all the time on a modded PSP I gave her so want to give her a little surprise.

Any ideas?

Not sure you would.
While the visuals look nice, the game suffers from having enemies become bullet sponges. This is compounded by the fact that the Spazer has been modified to make your shots much weaker instead of stronger like it normally does, but with the benefit of rapid fire, the Wave Beam has been modified to deal equal damage to the regular shot with the same rate of fire, and the two beams that actually increase your shot strength (Ice and Plasma) are modified to have an abysmally slow RoF.
All that, and enemies are so strong that some can deal a full Energy Tank worth of damage with both the Varia and Gravity suits equipped.

Yes, but after re-reading the comic, I can't seem to find a single instance where he's actually called "Armstrong." It's just "Houston" for the entirety of it. Makes me wonder where "Armstrong" even come from.

It's important to not the comic he was introduced in also introduced the concept of Samus' origins being an orphan raised by the Chozo, as well as the characters of Keaton and Hardy, all of which were re-used in the Zero Mission comic, which is apparently considered canon, but Houston himself was nowhere to be seen. So his status is ambiguous.

It also introduced the concept of the Power Suit being a part of Samus, being powered by her will, though in a very different way than later games (especially Other M) would portray it. It's a separate, physical suit of armour in this comic, rather than some sort of energy projection/construct as later games portray it.

A little epilogue skim, hopefully it doesn't sound autistic: Peach, now the ruler of the self-declared Mushroom Empire after the abdication of the Mushroom King, is now the suzerain of Sarasaland under a treaty with Daisy. Peach and Daisy then begin to mobilize against Bowser's Koopa with the help of.. well, Mario. The invasion is a success, and the Empire begins to use their newfound power to conduct traveling expeditions to far-away places. They reach an uninhabited archipelago named Sunspire (which is the setting of this hack) and Mario and Peach's guards claims it for the empire. Suddenly, a unit of Peach's guards go rogue and decide to claim the islands for themselves. Now, in W2 the uprising's leader (p. much known through the game as The Regent) agrees to work with an underground Koopa group and a man known as "The King". That's pretty much all I can say for right now, but let's just say the King was a final boss for a Mario game once

>> No.2640490

In the first castle you defeat the rogue Toad leader but he returns later as a boss in the game, then in W2 an airship fleet arrives under the command of the same Toad with the help of the Koopa rebels but you don't fight him again until W7. From W2-W7 it's securing the islands and defeating the rulers of each world, in W7 you finally defeat the regent for good, then you meet The King and W8 is a world where time goes absolutely in reverse, the King reverses time to get rid of Mario by going back in time through the games, you'll find that each level has a gimmick (The Subcon level has a Birdo fight, in SMB1 level you can't go back or change your jump direction, etc), then you defeat the boss, do this and that, and head into W9

How hard is it to learn ASM?

>> No.2643809

>>2643784
Do you got any programming experience? Or experience with low-level programming languages? A low-level programming language is one where you have to write down everything you want a processor to do. ASM is basically one step above machine code, so there's very little abstraction involved. Compare some random, high-level language

X = Y + Z

to

PULL Y FROM MEMORY
PULL Z FROM MEMORY
ADD Y AND Z
STORE THIS NUMBER TO X

That's all pseudocode (the syntax is correct, but the commands obviously aren't), but as you can see it takes a lot more effort to do a relatively simple thing.

Not to mention the type of assembly the Super Nintendo uses, 65c816 assembly, isn't used very much any more, so don't expect too much support if you run into problems.

Tl;dr it's certainly not the easiest programming language out there, that's for sure.

Regardless, if you want to start learning, try this out:

I don't care much for the randomizer function, but the Ancient Cave thingie is awesome. It's nearly a rogue-like. ancientcave for 200 floors, speedcave for 100 and ancientcavez for I think a vanilla version? Unlike the FF5 version, this one doesn't throw a time limit on you, and you have three teams to run. Plus many levels have multiple exits, some of which lead back to earlier floors, some loop around, some lead to treasure, and some just lead nowhere.

The random abilities your team will have is pretty cool. I have one guy with Quick as a free skill. Another has some randomized Ice-based attacks. One dude has nearly a full list of Magitek and Jump.

Why is it that while there is an abundance of Super Metroid hacks and an infinite shitton of Super Mario World hacks, there are basically no complete A Link to the Past hacks (all there is is the much controversial Parallel Worlds, and that's basically it)?

Is it because it's really hard to make dungeons which are good on their own, and additionally a good overworld which makes a coherent whole with the dungeons? Or that a complete hack of a Zelda game is expected to have too little replay value in proportion to the amount of time it takes to make a good one? Or yet something else?

> If I have to face another boss that doesn't telegraph its attacks or even react to getting hit I will stab myself in the eye with a fork.

I remember actually checking out Toad's World walkthrough on YouTube, because few of the bosses didn't play any sound effect when they got hit. I thought I was doing something wrong.

>because few of the bosses didn't play any sound effect when they got hit
Are you kidding me? That's the very least you should add.

Are there any hacks with good custom bosses people would recommend? And no-one please say Brutal Mario, because besides the bosses that are just ripped off from other games, they all have the same problems as Toad's World's bosses.

>> No.2671256

it's because the original creators knew what they were doing. amateurs can build platforming (although most hacks are too kaizo for my liking) but designing bosses takes alot more skill. which is why custom bosses in romhacks tend to be sloppy work.

I had an idea for a custom SMW boss. a magikoopa that would shoot two or three shots at once and warp around. it would turn boxes into yellow koopas, then you'd use those to hit back. you could kaizo it up by having one magic shot use the same movement pattern as rip van fish.

that's just one of those ideas I've had on the back burner. I haven't had the time to execute my own SMW hack.

go ahead. I'm probably not going to get around to making a full scale hack, so if my ideas can come to fruition elsewhere that's fine with me.

while I'm at it, here are more of my ideas:

a level where you have to fly through and avoid obstacles. there could be a solid platform in the middle with a checkpoint (long enough for a running start) to make it reasonable.

an underground level with a giant slide where you'd jump over muncher pits.

a maze full of springs that you have to bounce your way through.

if any anons use my ideas, all I ask is that you don't abuse munchers or invisible coin blocks.

it doesn't add an atb system, it changes WHEN you give commands to your characters.
normally you give all 4 members their commands and they'll do them when it's their turn.

With the Dynamic Action patch you give the command when it's one of your characters his/her turn and they'll do it directly.

It removes the feeling of playing in "rounds", and you'll never have "ineffective" melee attacks or magic again

So I went against my better judgement and tried that speedcave run. 10 hours worth of grinding into it, and I've hit a dead-end. Two out of three of my groups are at a door that requires all three to be there to open. The other team is trapped in an endless circle. I can go back, but every exit leads to the same two areas, which loop on themselves. The only option I can see is that one of those areas is South Figaro, and the randomizer stuck the exit I need on the corner of that one building, not knowing I can't walk over there, since the game normally expects you to go through the building, which is impossible here. So my game comes to an end not due to Atma, but bad luck.

Its nifty and fun and all, but it's a real kick in the dick to get hours deep into it only to find out the game handed you an unwinnable scenario, and to only be able to find that out by getting hours deep into it to encounter the problem, or opening the ROM up with an editor and checking all the exits manually.

>the randomizer stuck the exit I need on the corner of that one building, not knowing I can't walk over there
That exit is accounted for in the randomizer. It's more likely that at some point, an exit dropped you on the other side of the exit where you need to go to progress. Also note that there are two "hidden" exits in South Figaro, in the back of two of the houses.

If you post your seed I can take a look at it and determine whether it's impossible to play. I've completed the ancient cave mode numerous times and I'm pretty confident in the maze generation algorithm, but it's not impossible that I might have overlooked some obscure edge case.

Okay, ended up finding a very basic one from some TAS site, but it's still lacking in tons of information.

Started going through and fixing/adding stuff. Anybody got any tips/guides for making ram maps easier?

Pastebin kind of fucked up the formatting but whatever.

>If you post your seed
Damnit, and I just deleted it too. Yeah, I know about both hidden exits. The easy to reach one led back around to a previous area, and the other one I couldn't reach. Exiting the area from any side just led back to the FIRST area, Chocobo Barn was a dead end, the two exits in the lower left corner were treasure rooms, the upper left exit(the house with the back alley exit) leads to a dead end, the weapon shop was where I came from, the armor shop leads to the item shop, the item shop goes back to the armor shop, and the other two exits on the right just led to dead-ends. The other area that was linked to this was the inside of Doma Castle if I remember correctly. Again, all exits either went back to earlier areas, treasure rooms, dead-ends, or looped around.

Just wish I had kept it so I could tell you what the seed was.

Since you do seem to be knowledgeable about this thing though, I do have some questions. Why in the hell does it make nearly half the monsters I run into heal from pearl/holy damage? Why is Atma always such a dick and throwing Ultima around like it's a fad? How in the hell do you switch in party members you find in the Inn/SavePoint/Shop rooms? I ask that last one because I have one run where it only gave me four characters to start with, and I'm not sure what to do about that.

I'm the creator.

>Why in the hell does it make nearly half the monsters I run into heal from pearl/holy damage?
Just bad luck, as far as I can tell.
>Why is Atma always such a dick and throwing Ultima around like it's a fad?
Atma was able to use Ultima in vanilla, so it can get swapped with his other attacks. It will never be more than a 66% chance on a given turn, though (except where it was 100% in vanilla).
>How in the hell do you switch in party members you find in the Inn/SavePoint/Shop rooms?
You have to go back to the airship to change party members. I tried to make them swappable at the Inn, but the three-party system complicates things quite a bit. That's the main reason why "speedcave" was created, so people could start with 12 characters and not bother returning to the airship.

Ya done good. This shit is like a graphical roguelike you can play with a controller. It's the game I never knew I wanted. Airship eh? That will make the full cave very interesting indeed. Looks like I need to make maps.
>Just bad luck, as far as I can tell.
Given the way my luck usually runs, sounds about right. Thanks for the info.

Maps are rapidly turning into lovecraftian horrors. Door X leads to Door Y, Door Y leads to Door Z, Z and A are in the same room, and you need to take Door A in order to get back to the room that had Door X. RNG thought it would be funny to string a bunch of rooms with many exits together, so it gets even more interesting.

On the plus side, this run spawned me with an esper that teaches Life3.

Either it doesn't want to work, or it's not worth playing. It's been how many years since people figured out the ways they were breaking the ROM, and yet this shit still persists?

Any SMW hacks that are actually worth playing, actually work on accurate emulators/real hardware, and don't have retarded difficulty or completely shitty level design?(No, putting slopes on EVERY FUCKING EDGE isn't good design.)

I sadly can't think of much... most of the hacks I like are old and will break.

I've always liked this hack, though. This one should work on hardware: http://bin.smwcentral.net/u/18957/smp.ips

They slow the game down, especially the item acquisition fanfare. Considering how many items there are in the game, you're going to spend a significant amount of time waiting if you go for a 100% run. Even speedrunning the fanfare gets old quickly.
