Heroes of Might and Magic 1-3 thread.

Recently used a fix for homm2 and 64bit, but there's a problem.
Only Slugfest is selectable in the editor. (I can play other maps though)

Plays fine, but I'd like editor access.

Anyone have any ideas or know of a better 64bit fix?

I’ve been playing that map Jedi Story lately. It’s pretty well designed but I seriously need pro advice.

A lot of people seem to be able to rush this map and get thousands of archangels as soon as month 8or 9 whereas I barely reach 500 by month 15. I spend several months just recruiting so I lose a lot of time (the worst part is that for some reason the game crashes at the end of month 30day 1).

How can I play this map more efficiently and minimize my recruit sessions (I have considered boosting knowledge instead of balancing it with power but I don’t know whether it’s a good idea or not)?

if you really dont want a campaign, like >>2364805 said, just play random. jebus cross XL is a really rich template that is pretty easy to mess around on since the AI doesnt know how to 'break' into the middle for at least 6 weeks, sometimes even longer, so its easy to get your bearings and just practice clearing the map, plus jebus has pretty much everything enabled so you'll get a good feel for the different artifacts, spells, monster types/dwellings, map locations, etc.

I liked HOMM 1 and 2's art style better than the rest of the series. The 3D turned into sprites looks ugly to me for some reason
Also I tried to play the campaigns in chronological order in the entire series but got stopped at one of HOMM3's expansions. It felt ridiculously hard. I forget which campaign specifically but, it involved me playing as rampart VS a necromancer faction. I was on the second map and failed to actually get anywhere. I was only playing on hard (or normal, which gives you equal footing with the CPU).
is HOMM3 really a massive step up in difficulty?

thats pretty much my setting. Sometimes when I play on larger maps I build up some other town and create secondary hero just to clean the annoying mine stealers. I also play on impossible, I really like that more challenging start, still learning how big army can you destroy with a few troops.

as my starting strategy I usually take gold bonus and try to hire second hero first day. then I use the troops to start fighting with my main. secondary either loots free shit, or sweeps after the main clears the paths. We always called this secondary hero a Shadow. Main reason is that main doesnt spend the precious movement points for taking resources and shit, but focuses purely on fighting and statups

also gold from chests, always! no exceptions! there is never enough gold. when you have enough gold, you already won and are just clearing the map.

Why is Inferno so fucking bad?

They've got nothing going for them, all their units are shit, gogs are arguably worst lvl 1, gogs are slow and the upgrade fucks them over, cerberi are eh, demons too, pit fiends are nice but really expensive for what you get, Efreets are fast but frail and devils just feel lacking for a level 7

>Why is Inferno so fucking bad?

Because you have to play with them as a devil would do, instead of steamrolling your opponents with magic buffs + fast units.

Get efreet sultan and drop nonstop Armageddon, use multiple stacks of fodder + pit lords to snowball demons (even when you are fighting neutral units, let your fodder get killed first before you beat them), use efreeti in suicide rushes so their fire shield dishes out unblockable damage, or even just abuse the Armageddon + retreat tactic...

They are still weaker than other factions even if you abuse all their tricks, but they'll also become WAY more annoying to fight against.

Okay everyone, rank your towns from best to worst, and tell us why

>1) Tower.
Best level 1/6/7 units in the game, and the rest are better than average aswell. Mage Guild lvl 5 + Library is great, too. Decent heroes, too.
>2) Dungeon.
Expensive, but very strong. Beholders are great midgame, both as shooters/hand2hand. Black Dragons + Armageddon is so much fun. Great heroes aswell.
>3) Necropolis.
Purely strengthwise this is number 1. So many skeletons. Vampire Lord are THE best unit in the game, a stack of 40 can easily solo any griffin observatory or dragon utopia
>4) Castle.
Dem archangels. Has 2 fliers and shooters. Also has my favourite hero in the game (Orrin) Champions are expensive as shit.
>5) Stronghold.
Battle Mage is the best hero class in the game. Gundula or Crag Hack easily snowballs into an unstoppable force. Behemoths week 1.
>6) Rampart.
Grand Elves are super nice, but other than that they're meh. Pretty much a worse Dungeon.
>7) Fortress
Very high defense. Dragonflies are good for scouts. However I personally find it very boring to play. Wyverns are really weak, and only lvl 3 mage guild. Besides, great defense aside someone like Crag Hack can use his offense as a defense (killing creatures off before they can hit back) but a defensive hero can't do that.
>8) Inferno.
THE worst town no question about it. Both units and heroes are lacking. ONE ranged unit, and a really bad one at that. Devils are expensive and underwhelming. Efreets are nice tough.

Relatively balanced out so there's no extreme weak point but nothing that stands out.
>Barbarian
At least they're not as bad as Knights

No fliers, only one ranged unit and that's a low level one to boot. They have the most upgradable units but that can be more a curse than a blessing.

Sorry but Knight are by far the best starting race in Homm 2. You don't have to buy a single building except the statue with them.

The thing about Knights is that their heroes have a very high chance to learn Diplomacy. With expert Diplomacy you can buy complete neutral stacks for their normal gold hiring price so you can easily buy a Black Dragon or Titan stack during week 1 or 2 and steamroll the other players with it.

You can do the same thing the AI does though. Using spells then retreating is often the only way to fight against the AI when you're heavily outnumbered. Once you get the dimension door spell you easily chase any enemy hero down.

As annoying as the AI is in this game series, it's not nearly as bad as those in HOMM clones like Disciples and AoW.

Eagle Eye is not that bad if only one player has access to great spells.

First Aid is insanely useful early game, when you only have 1-2 level 6 or 7 units. You can basically use them as invulnerable meat tanks, because you can heal back faster then they can kill them (at higher level, first aid can heal over 100 points). It also leaves you open to cast magic (instead of wasting mana on Cure), and it is the only way to heal Dragons.

It's only in late game on huge maps where both skills become over shadowed by things like Expert Earth Magic, or high level Necromancer/Offense/Armorer specialities.

A lot of crap skills have uses like that.

I think the only truly useless skill is Scouting.

Train, train, train. Never use your main hero for anything other than fighting/picking up stat boosts. I always have atleast 2 heroes following my main hero so I can pick up the resources/flag mines, aswell as giving one of the following heroes all the main heroes troops except the fastest one

That way you get maximum amount of movement points next turn, as it's based on the speed of the slowest creature in your army

Also practice your chaining. At the end of the week, place your heroes as good as possible so that you can get your fresh troops to your main as soon as possible. So, like, one hero in the town, which runs to the next hero, switches thr troopes, and runs to the next etc.. You follow?

Also, learn to fight as effectively as possible, with minimum loses. Use a shooter and then a fast one as a bait, and always stay just out of reach. That way, you can keep shooting them while your fast unit keeps them from getting to your shooters. In that way you can beat Minotaurs week one with just Master Gremlins and Stone Gargoyles, for example.

They're the best faction to play vs map because Devils are very fast with non-retal, and that means a single stack of Devils can clear out a ton of encounters like vs Throng of Zombies or whatever slow unit is there, and once you add Expert Slow to the mix you can easily tackle anything. Spirit of Oppression helps make sure you never get an uncalculated morale streak ruin your day.

Efreeti are very strong units too, and if you snowball a shitload of demons from sacrificing level 1-2-3 units and whatever you find from external dwellings, you can play it like Necropolis Lite.

>Decent heroes
Tower has the worst fucking heroes in the game
>Alchemist class always starts with one shitty skill
>Shitty main skill progression
>Wizards are mediocre, mostly advancing in Knowledge over Spell Power, which you do not need
>Solmyr is overrated as fuck, you want your magic hero for early game to cast Magic Arrow a couple times per day, meanwhile Solmyr expends his mana pool in just 1-2 fights and then needs a well, if there ain't one he is a sitting duck, late game Solmyr will be wrecked by any other magic hero (C.Light specialty doesn't do any worthwhile bonus damage), not to mention any might hero, especially Neela from his own town.

Tower is really fucking expensive and doesn't fit every map, it's a far cry from the single best town because it has probably the clunkiest design stemming from trying to be a "high magic" town which doesn't work because might heroes and might oriented playstyles are just plain better.

Necro and Conflux trounce everything else, then Castle (easiest and simplest to play with strong units), Stronghold (strongest, fastest start, easy Earth Magic), Fortress (you DON'T NEED a mage guild higher than level 3, you can conquer it from someone else + the best combat spells are level 1 and 2 anyway, thanks to how broken Expert Magic is; with Fortress you just clear the map faster than others because of Wyverns and Hydras who are broken for fighting the map, and then snowball into an advantage) and maybe Dungeon if you can get a good early game with Trogs.
Tower is superhard to play. The Titans aren't even as good and versatile as Archangels or even Black Dragons. Gargoyles are bad units aside from flying, Golems are too slow to work as much more than protectors, Genies only are good with upgrade, and the whole town remains horribly expensive anyway. You CAN wreak havoc early game with a force like 5-6 Naga Queens though.
Rampart is good because strong start and great heroes (Mephala, Ivor).

I don't remember the details, but I think it was either a wandering monster stack of maxed out azure dragons (their quantity grows over time, 4000 is the cap), or a guard tower or Pandora's box that mixed up multiple stacks of lvl7+ units, maybe lvl8 ones as well.

You normally get a maximum of 2667 power liches for a maxed out stack, so I was quite surprised to get double of that - it had to have been because I was fighting 2 times 4000 units.

I think it was on this map (it was littered with rust and azure dragons, that ended up growing to max amount, and some of them actually joined me - hence the 15k rust dragons). Don't ask for the map title, I don't remember, and it was an awful map too - one inferno player had the grail, so the map was almost impossible to navigate through due to all the imps.

What do you guys typically do with the new towns that you capture? I'm just starting out playing on medium maps on easy, but usually I just upgrade them to City Halls and maybe Castles. If anyone attacks I'll just buy up whatever creatures are there, and I usually don't bother getting a hero since my main is the only one really worth a crap.

It depends on the situation, type of town compared to my main and whether I expect a counter attack.
If you lose the town everything you build up will be used against you so it may be best not to invest anything. Defenses can be useful if you intend to use your hero to defend against recapture attempts but wasteful if you can only muster up a token force. Throwing money at your enemy mainly makes sense if you have too much of it and want to deprive him of as many resources as possible.
If a counter attack is unlikely and I can't use the troops getting economy upgrades is obviously the priority. Mage guild and special buildings can also be useful depending on the situation.
Ultimately it can be worthwhile to raise a new army but that's more of a long term investment.

It works a bit easier for Inferno because they get a few things that make it easier.

Specifically, a fire immune lvl 6 creature, a very high probability for Armageddon to appear in their magic schools, and a support building that boosts magic power.

It comes with understanding how it will choose its next target. It most often tries to avoid retaliation.

>Is demon farming really worth the headache?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm-y2b48Y3k
As you can see here, yes. It can really make your army work.

>you can't base a strategy around it.
Multiplayer Kreegan players pretty much rely on this as a strat.

The only things Inferno has going for it is the relatively cheap cost resource-wise for initial buildup (it's easy to climb up tiers of units, which can be important on poor templates) and the massive, massive PvE power that are Devils (fast non-retal that can solo kill a ton of tough creatures you'd require to endure some losses or bring an entire army to kill, which is sometimes superfluous).

General pointers are to
>sacrifice all your Imps, Gogs and Dogs to become Demons once you're capable of farming
>don't improve your Demons into Horned Demons until you're done farming
>collect all the +HP trinkets because Pit Lords ressurect off HP as well as off unit quantity; with no artifacts you need 9 (35/4 = 9) imps to raise a single Demon, but a single +1 HP trinket makes you only need 7 (35/5), that's huge
>visit all the dwellings with your heroes, every shitty Pikeman counts

Anyway, as the video shows, you can raise a legion of Demons in just 3 months without diplomacy.

You're playing the most powerful faction in the game once it gets rolling.
The best starting hero will be Galthran. +1 speed to Skeletons can be a big deal, and you will start with a lot of them as him, making them your early game powerstack. Isra is also pretty good, but more late than early game. Thant's unique spell is good if he can get Expert Earth, but he can also teach it to your main in the future (I prefer might-oriented heroes to magicians).
Get that Expert Necromancy ASAP. Get all your dwellings+Castle ASAP. Your priority is also to improve the Vampires. Vampire Lords self-ressurect by attacking enemies, making them absolutely ridiculous. Just a couple of them will win any mediocre encounter, because not only do they self-ressurect, they're also fast and don't provoke retaliation. You can probably kill a legion of Dendroids or Dwarves with just properly microed Vampire Lords. Once you amass enough of them, on a bulky enough hero, you can even do this with just them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhM36Vd-6dI

The most efficient way would be to have a couple of Expert Necromancy characters, split your army between them and amass skeletons from all sides of the map, but there's no need for that if you're a beginner. Just get a single strong hero, win battles, get a shitload of skeletons.

Remember that every dwelling on the map is your friend because low-tier units from other towns can be turned into Skeletons with the Transformer.

DO NOT upgrade your Skeletons into Warriors! If you have all slots filled, your Necromancy skill will raise the dead as Warriors, but only at a 2/3 number efficiency. That's not worth it. Only upgrade Skeletons once you're done farming them and you're about to finish your opponents off. Otherwise, don't bother, it's not such a big upgrade anyway.

Necropolis guy here, again.
Dungeon is a sweet town. The hero classes available are some of the best in their category (both Overlords and Warlocks are solid). As usual, I prefer a might hero, preferrably Shakti, because he can start even with 100+ troglodytes, which are a massive force in the early game, and also has Tactics. Shakti is a really fun hero and you can do a lot with such a starting army. Gunnar is a very solid hero with Logistics specialty, and pretty much every other Overlord (Ajit, Dace, Damacon, etc.) is good (don't pick Lorelei, though, level 2 specialists always exchange around 20-40 level 1 units for 4-7 level 2 units, and that's a terrible deal unless you're Tyraxor/Stronghold). Notable Warlocks are Deemer (Meteor Shower is a strong spell), Alamar and Jeddite; I mostly like them because they can teach my main hero Ressurection/Meteor, but on their own, Warlocks are good because Dungeon gets Mana Vortex and Warlocks advance a lot in Spell Power (which is way more relevant than Knowledge).

Anyway, as Dungeon on a non-200% difficulty level, you should have no problem with either approach - either mass of Troglodytes or Magic Arrow goodness. You want to get Manticores to block shooters in the early game - they're perhaps the worst level 6 units, but they will still be essential for fighting those pesky shooters.

Late-game, your army is one of the best in the game, and your units are just plain solid, particularly Minotaur Kings.

When fighting shooters with Harpies, remember to first fly adjacent to them without attacking them, otherwise they'll fly away and not block the archers.

More Dungeon tips:
If you have a hero with high Spell Power, you can outfit them with only Black Dragons and abuse their immunity to all magic by painlessly casting Armageddon. This makes an unit that is already a really efficient map clearer on its own even stronger. You can even use this to employ hit'n'run tactics against enemy heroes by rehiring the same magic hero over and over again.

Make sure to abuse the Dragon's 2-hex attack when at all possible, and avoiding it from roasting your troops.

The Portal of Summoning is one of the strongest unique buildings in this game. As Dungeon, if at all possible, make sure to not flag useless dwellings. Portal of Summoning works off the dwelling you've last *visited* (not flagged!), and it effectively doubles your population from that dwelling (because you can hire from town and also from the dwelling at the same time). So, for instance, if you last flagged a Dragon dwelling, you can make your Dragon population even more massive, furthering your domination.

If your strategy is reliant on Ressurection, it might be wise not to upgrade your Red Dragons.

If you're on a poor map and have no perspectives towards getting Mantis and/or Castle in the first week, and want even more mileage out of your strong early game, consider upgrading Troglodyte dwelling for that +1 speed. If I were you, I'd actually focus on learning how to fight battles with meager forces, so that might help.

And you're right. Sorry. To make it more clear, when you use Portal of Summoning, it only works off the dwelling you last visited in the first week from it being bought.

I got a little ahead of myself because in some MP matches on random maps it isn't that hard to envision getting a Red Dragon dwelling in week 1 if you start near one and have good luck with getting troglodytes early on (Shakti+level 1 dwelling+two Dungeon heroes in tavern can earn you 200 trogs day 1 if you're lucky).

Isn't there a keyboard combination to disable their swoop-back, so they attack and stay there? On a second read I realize it's for dueling so it's not as autistic as it seems since it's prolly on a tiny map and shit is gonna be decided in like a week or two anyway. It'd get annoying having to remember all the rules on a larger map though.

Any chance of ever getting the source to HOMM3? From what I understand everything is done via code injection which works for existing mods but if you had the source you could probably make multiplayer settings that would take the memorization out of stuff like this--like you have a "game rules" option to select whatever specific ruleset to play by, and then you don't have to worry about adhering to them.

>> No.2430778

Since the rules are for dueling on a small map it's probably because with DD/fly/wings you can hop over shit to get to shit without fighting stuff or ambush like you said, but with town portal you can only go to towns you already control and the distance between them isn't going to be much more than you could travel by foot anyway, compared to a longer game on a medium or larger map where it's gamebreaking.

He has an obscenely better mana to damage ratio than other low level magic heroes though (especially considering access to spells they have), which makes him great for busting through fights you otherwise wouldn't be able to get through in week 1 (and maybe week 2). If you're using him correctly, you should be just barely able to win those one or two fights and have been unable to win them otherwise.

He's pretty fucking useless as a main hero later on though, so after he's done that I move my main army to my real main hero. After that he's a top tier scout character, as with just a couple of fast units he can get through easier fights pretty well so you can expand in areas away from where your main hero is.

That's hyperbole at best. He's a Wizard. He's 95% the same as the other 50 wizards. Specialisation isn't the character, even in this case. It's not like he's got an Eagle Eye specialty.

>> No.2431695

>>2431150
No, Tower is nowhere close to top tier due to bad heroes (all Alchemists start with one irrelevant skill and have weak skill progression, and Wizards are never going to be main hero material), huge costs, difficulty taking banks due to difficulty of getting them on your native terrain (which is a big deal), low overall speed of the army (makes it difficult to take initiative), awkward build order, etc.

>>2431325
Castle can get Angels week 1 on a rich map and they're immediately useful due to being fliers with high stats. Tower is highly unlikely to achieve the same effect due to being pretty much forced to upgrade Workshop day 1, you can at most afford Nagas+Castle. Furthermore, Giants, straight out of the box, are mediocre units, being oafish walkers that you'd really hate to lose but they're not that tanky either. It takes too long to get them rolling, and their late game isn't even *that* stellar.

Tower can be a strong late game town, potentially beat Castle, but there's good reason it's hardly picked in MP. In SP, of course, you can do anything with anyone and still win, but still, I'd rather play something like Barbarian Breakout with Stronghold or Fortress.

>>2431627
He's useless as a main hero because a magic hero is useless as a main hero. With the existence of Orb of Inhibition, Attack/Defense scaling much better than SP/Knowledge, and bad secondary skills for mages, plus the magic system working in favor of might heroes, you just don't want a Wizard. If you want a magic hero, you want a Warlock or an Elementalist because they get high SP. Or a Battle Mage, because they're basically more versatile Barbarians (less brute force, tho). High level Solmyr's Chain Lightning is maybe 20 damage higher than any other mage's.

If you play Tower, you want to buy yourself a Barbarian/Overlord/Ranger/Knight (preferrably Orrin). If you can't, pick Neela.

The artifact was located south of your starting castle IIRC. It was way closer to you than your ally. Still annoying that ally can casually steal it from you.

Having Angelic Alliance made Tarnum into unstoppable demigod and made the last maps very easy (I was able to easily take down devils with pikemen). So unless you like feeling powerful as hell don't sweat it. Final boss will be a douchebag without it though because he has Armor of the Damned.

My friend bought me HD version of HoMM 3 so I finally decided to finish all campaigns from Restoration of Erathia (I actually never finished them all). They were quite enjoyable however some of them didn't let you transfer heroes nor artifacts between missions (which saddened me greatly).

Anyway. I was messing around in "Song for the Father" campaign. For those who don't remember: this is the campaign where you fight off Necropolis' forces led by resurrected King Gryphonheart. This campaign transfers your heroes between missions so I could make some powerful heroes.

Here's my little story about what I did in that campaign:
>Get Sandro in first mission and level him up generously
>Acquire Town Portal and Fly in second mission
>Enemy can't comprehend my magic and gets devoured by my Spook Soldiers
>Final map
>Start with 3 towns. One of them is Rampart with 5th level of Magic Guild
>Evil idea popped up in my head
>Reset the map until Dimension Door is acquired
>herewego.jpg
>Enemy Necropolis located and conquered in 3 days
>See tomb behind Necropolis
>"Oh nice, this must be Gryphonheart's tomb. I wonder if I can get something from it"
>Teleport there
>Acquire nothing
>Picture related happened
Did someone else do this? I actually laughed at this situation with my friend.

One more question. Is there a way to play other HoMM 3 campaigns on steam version of the game?

This fact saddens me because I love these campaigns. I finally finished them all last November (even took screenshots of every Tarnum at the end of campaigns and scores so I could compare them later).

>i'd missout good portions of the story because i would complete the mission before the day which would trigger a story event
When you are ready to finish a map just save the game, give yourself some Archangels via cheat and skip turns in front of objective/enemy castle. This way you won't miss out on story and won't be ranked as cheater if you load the game. At least I wasn't.

http://mightandmagic.wikia.com has really good descriptions of story and missions (they are not vague at all).
Additionally, there is one diary-like description in polish language which is really cool.

>Like for example i didnt really know that Tarnum's crush died untill he casualy mentioned it a few missions after
Was it from the "Warlords of the Wasteland" mission where you conquer swamp people?

>my bad, it was an inferno hero who took it but the ally was dungeon, then again it doesent really make sence why the underworld guys would ally with the good guys, is it even explained in "Jorm's Ambush"?
"The Boatman" has Helm of Heavenly Enlightment. One of the Inferno towns is allied to you in this mission.
"The Jorm's Ambush" has different artifact (pendant?) and dungeon town is allied to you in it.
IIRC, it was explained in Jorm's Ambush. At that point of the game, you know that Jorm stole Gryphonheart's soul and was quite unpopular in underground (because he sought duke position in underworld). Tarnum decided to seek Deezelisk (an actual duke of underworld) because he would be helpful in finding Jorm. I assume dungeon is either enemy of Jorm or underling of Deezelisk.
But still, what about Inferno town from second map?

Also, how far are you into Heroes Chronicles if I may ask?

If it triggers you so much then just start playing other chapters. You can pick up everything that's not "Clash of Dragons" or "The Sword of Frost" (these are the last two chronologically IIRC). Ah, and "The Fiery Moon" continues story from "The World Tree".
"Masters of the Elements" is my favourite probably. The story is very funny and the gameplay is sweet in this one (and you transfer some powerful shit between missions).

At least you got Diplomacy in your skillset. I don't remember if I had an opportunity to pick it. And we both ended up without Logistics which I find funny.

nah i really gotta finish the campaign, i dont mind the lack of stats from the set but i do mind the lack of free expert prayer every battle

after i complete this chapter i will probably switch to heroes 4 and to the heaven campaign and with that i would have pritty much completed all of the heroes 4 vanila and expansion campaigns

would having two heroes with maxed out tactis stack? like 100% creature offence from 1 hero + 100% offence from the other?

Jabarkas. My 2nd choice (1st is Orrin) for perfect Tower hero (high Attack progression and starts with Archery), and boosts Stronghold's already stronk early game. Even if he's used outside his town and his specialty goes to waste, he remains a Barbarian (one of the best hero classes).

All Archery people are IMHO some of the strongest early game heroes, even on towns who have poor shooters. Wystan and Calh aren't bad at all, and can be a savior on really poor maps where even the cheap towns have issues.

And, of course, Gurnisson for that OP early game ballista.

I believe it was stated somewhere that Conflux was supposed to be a campaign-only town and also supposed to be even worse in those respects to give the player a really challenging AI opponent, only it had to be put into the spotlight once fans unfamiliar with M&M lore reacted in outrage over the Forge. As such, it probably would have been fine.

Well, I can't say if they made Conflux deliberately overpowered but it certainly looks like it. I feel that if they remade all elementals and fixed Phoenixes (increase their cost and/or reduce their growth) it could be balanced town (despite having Magic University).

Two more things:
Pixies are not the best level 1 unit (even considering their growth).

>Pixies are not the best level 1 unit (even considering their growth).
It's a fast flyer with no retaliation who happens to synergize very well with Conflux strategies and units.

A powerstack of upgraded Pixies can easily run circles around enemies like Throngs of Zombies/Dwarves/Dendroids and pick them off one by one, with little skill involved, especially if Spirit of Oppression is in play. Pixies can block shooters, Pixies can do hit'n'run against walkers, and when split are a great bait for faster enemies so that your Stormies can shoot their shit up.

You want your level 1 units for early game, primarily, unless you're Necropolis. Pixies completely crush it, and also help with strategies like Luna's firewall abuse because they fly and are fast. Halberdiers, Centaur Captains, Master Gremlins etc. have better stats and fill certain niches but they don't allow for so many options in comparison.

>Are Elementalist really the best heroes in the game? I seriously don't know.
They're not might heroes so not really, but they do have a bonus primary stat point over other wizard classes (for some reason) and they have Ciele and Luna, both extremely strong heroes.

To be fair, the audiences for HOMM and M&M were mostly separate and NWO hadn't really put any M&M lore that was outside of tolkienesque fantasy into the games.

Sure there was some stuff in some of the single scenarios for homm2 but it wasn't clear that those were related to the overall world and not just a story for those certain maps, and there were only like 2 anyway iirc.

If they wanted to really have M&M stuff in HOMM they should have started earlier; as it was it didn't fit the existing HOMM universe and some of it was plain retarded anyway (the Kreegans are actually space aliens that look exactly like devils and live in medieval castles because reasons.)

I'll assume you meant to reply to me with this one.
If he had just linked a copy in any fashion, I'd have thanked him, downloaded it and we'd each have been on our way. Total time: about 5 minutes.
If he had never replied to me in the first place, fair enough I wouldn't have been hanging on while expecting anything and could have gotten on with finding an alternate solution. Total time: about 2 hours or so.
If he had replied back today with "sent", well I'd have already found an alternate solution (as happened today) and wouldn't have even bothered checking my mail to see if he was telling the truth or not, so legit or not I would have just thanked him then been on my way while playing the copy I was eventually able to get. Total time: 18 hours+

However, he kept finding new problems to every solution last night that weren't even valid, then most of the day later he replies asking what version? That makes absolutely no difference, was his followup going to be that I hadn't told him if it needed to be in a .zip or .rar? That I hadn't specified what the archive needed to be named? what uploader it had to be on? He's just taking the piss. Total time: Until the eventual heat death of the universe, give or take a little.

I think the level caps are throwing me off a bit. However, it seems like in the campaign you're supposed to be leveling everyone you can up as much as possible. Should I still stick with the single super hero strategy in the campaign or is it more of a hero-by-committee?

I'm on the 2nd mission of Long Live the Queen, and I can take 8 heroes to the next mission. Should I be trying to level all of them up to lvl12 or just focus on my main 4 heroes? Or just 1-2 heroes and everyone else tags along?

Wut? In H3 that takes maybe ten seconds if the map is XL (and you can even remove hero traveling animations if you want), a bit more in H4 and actually quite long in H5 but if it's multiplayer you can have that ghost mode and do shit even if it's not your turn. So I don't see a problem, tbh.

Relays often help a lot. Mobility can be a key factor in victory, and thus having an extra crappy hero or two to transport new troops to your guys far from town can save you a lot of time.

Considering carefully on wether to take the gold or experience from chests. From 500 xp chests, the 1000 gold is often more valuable considering the low practical level of XP.

Don't forget that often the weakest spells are often the best. With expert level spellcasting, spells like haste, curve, shield, and bless, can prove to be extremely effective, far more so than damage dealing spells. Haste particularly. A lot of the time you can cross the entire battlefield with most of your army before they get a single activation.

Keep an eye on the day of the week, and consider the value of creature dwellings. It's probably a better idea to get a new creature level, or a castle/citadel, etc, than to upgrade something else, if you're on day 6 or 7, as you'll almost immediately get a creature burst as the week rolls over, rather than building it on day 1/2, and only getting the small amount of initial creatures before growth occurs.

Also pic related. Both are valid for different situations.

>>2467818
Yeah I always go for early army instead of economy, I feel like in the long run that's the safest way to ensure you don't get rushed, and people love to rush you in gameranger a lot.

How about actual logistics, I find myself often taking too long in transporting troops from my castle to my main. Should I just make a note not to venture too far? Or should I place more heroes in-between the routes? I always lose the game when some guy pops out of an underworld and just takes my main castle like it's nothing, and if I do make an army there based on every single week I haven't taken for my main, I end up losing the castle, gold that was used to buy the army and the army itself. That's why I keep attacking dragon lair's, hoping for that Earth book.

Extra heroes might help. You might also consider alternatives like leaving the creatures at midpoints like mines, garrisons, etc.

Also, explode past those gates. At least give yourself some forewarning. Plus you can get town portal through regular magic guild development. Or something equally nice, like fly, or waterwalk. There's also always the possiblity of pressuring the enemy and preventing them from taking the initiative.

>> No.2467849

> leaving the creatures at midpoints like mines, garrisons, etc.
Do you think that's a good idea just leaving your forces in a building far from the castle and your hero? I was always afraid of losing it to enemies since there's really no reason not to nuke a small army like that with your main/alt AND get a building, little risk big reward.

>Plus you can get town portal through regular magic guild development.
I think the proper level for TP is around level 4-5. It's such a resource sink that I've given up hoping for a random spell spawn in any new castle I get. It's such a slim chance and such a BIG investment.
>Or something equally nice, like fly, or waterwalk
I believe both of those, and overall any logistics changer spell is around level 4-5, so my only hope for +movement
is leveling appropriate skills and finding arts like boots/gloves

>There's also always the possiblity of pressuring the enemy and preventing them from taking the initiative.
So take the fight to them? Yeah that's viable 1x1 but I just play pugs with 5+ for now, when pressuring one guy usually ends up in the third one fucking you over in the meantime. Any tips for an XL map with underworld and water? There's so many ways into your castle that that's where I get lost...

>> No.2467864

>>2467849
>Do you think that's a good idea just leaving your forces in a building far from the castle and your hero?
Typically no, but it's on the assumption that the chief issue is that your hero can't easily get back to town, not that you'll be flanked like that. Your supply guy rides a day or two out, your main hero rides a day or two back and they meet in the middle. Leaving the creatures somewhere means they don't have to worry about the actual meeting point.
>nuke a small army like that
Assuming they both know that it's there, and that they can reach it.
>TP
Level 4. Dimensional Door and suchlike are 5.

Beyond that, just play efficiently. Where's your hero not that they're in such trouble? Are your opponents consistently winning battles against you? Massively out-teching you?
>pugs with 5
Depends on where the other towns are. In times like that, a more defensive strategy might be better. Let them wear themselves out against each other, but obviously that's contingent on the midfields. Success in that case might well come from control of the various mines, etc, AFTER the guards have been cleared off.

Beyond that, you just need to do more with less. Predict what's going to happen, scout as needed, adjust, and do well in the actual battles with what you have.
>so many ways into your castle
But not many that you don't have forewarning, with a little scouting, or that aren't chokepointed off.

>> No.2467884

>>2467864
Ok I think I'll try this next pug
* establish at least one specific route from the main hero to the native castle
* hire two heroes to stand in-between the route on mills/dwellings
* leave creatures in dwellings that are near to that route and are as far from the possible entrances from udnerworld/portal/water then relocate heroes to other routes/alts, repeat/rinse
* let the opponents wear out before engaging anyone ( the problem though is that by the time they wear each other out the level/EXP differences between our mains is colossal and there's no amount of army I can throw at them to win, any tips here? I was thinking at pushing out when I have at least 3 castles and two main heroes)
* try to anticipate where the opponent might come from, scout with trash heroes on chokepoints and try to wear them out as best as possible with the least amount of army I have

>> No.2467910

>>2467884

>leave creatures in dwellings
Remember that's all just to facilitate getting them to your main hero quickly. Everything is in service to that. With 2 helpers, chances are you can get them from town to hero in a single day, maybe 2.
>wear out
That's probably for the best. Experience is a pain, but if you time it right and they're still fucked up from the fight, you could pull it off. In the meantime, try not to let things build up that much. Don't waste your own guys, and learn to make the most of things in smaller battles. Also, don't forget about retreating. For a good spellcaster, it can be a big help.
>3 castles
Big ass maps you're playing on if getting 3 is a starting step.
Really, it comes down to the specific circumstances. Like I said, scouting is vital. If you can get in there early when you're strong and they're weak, do so. Don't let them recover. But again, it's down to knowing yourself, and the enemy.
>anticipate
And try to quickly get a 1 day bubble around everything you have. No surprises.

Man.... these crazy russians are just on a whole other level

They push out on 2nd week with 1 stack of a few end-tier units, 1-2 stacks of any ranged unit, usually around 80, and fill the rest stacks with just 1-10 units of randoms. SECOND WEEK. They're level 18, and have at least one fully geared hero. What is this shit? Then when they're attacking a castle THEY BLOCK THEIR RANGED STACK WITH THE RANDOMS so you can't melee them, proceed to spam meme spells like firewall, slow, curse or any CC on your shit until you die, all in the while having perfect morale and luck, like what in the fuck is this shit?

The normal strategy is to just pick the Warlock Castle and kill everything with your skeletons. The AI will never attack your skeletons if an ranged unit (Centaur) or a flying unit (Gargoyle) is in attack range. You can abuse this hard.

>> No.2478230

>>2478192
Knights have a bonus to morale, Barbarians don't have a terrain penalty for movement, Warlocks have better sight range and Sorceresses have more movement on water.

And the heroes have different primary stats as well iirc.
I think primary skills work the same way as later games.
Primary: Attack-Defense-Spell Power-Knowledge
Barbarians: 3-1-1-1
Knight: 2-2-1-1
Sorceress: 0-0-2-3
Warlock: 0-0-3-2

Each level up they increase one stat.

Knight: 35%, 45%, 10%, 10%
Barbarian: 55%, 35%, 5%, 5%
Warlock: 10%, 10%, 50%, 30%
Sorceress: 10%, 10%, 30%, 50%

Something like that I think up to level 9.
Then Sorc/warlock have: 20%, 20%, 30%, 30%
Barbarian: 30%, 30%, 20%, 20%
Knight: 25%, 25%, 25%, 25%
iirc, not sure.

The Sorceress heroes have more movement points in water.
The Warlock heroes have a larger field of vision.

Always pick a Barbarian hero as your main hero because he has the most useful stat growths. The best spells (Beserker and Dimension Door) are uneffected by your spellpower and there are common artifacts that give +5 knowledge but no non-grail artefact gives +5 attack power.

Edited the final map in the evil campaign into a coop version 5 years ago.
Some other minor changes as well other than splitting the evil players castles into 3 teams like adding Eliza for Sorceress and Haart and Halton for Knight.

Gave the Necromancer 2 Castles and 2 heroes(brother brax and Corlagon), Warlock remains at 1 with Archibald, Barbarian has 1 castle and 2 towns.

Sounds okay?
There isn't really a campaign relevant hero to add to the barbarians sadly.
Thought about adding Wyrm(uses Rialdos portrait) as a barbarian with expert necromancy to spice things up, but I don't know.

Playing it as a standard map, so no campaign bonuses like dragon alliance or carry over army.

I added the ultimate crown to archibald, I guess it could be interesting to manually add an army that would replicate the carry over army as a seperate version.

Playing as the Warlock team with Barbarian and necromancer AI.

Roland is approaching with his insane stats and lots of titans.

Sadly I didn't get armaggedon, but I did get chain lightning and the +50% lightning damage item.
As for good guy buffs:
>Wizard
The Wizard team was merged with Rolands team, so they have +1 Wizard castle and a superhero in Roland that roams around like a normal hero.
>Knight
Added an island Castle in the lower left corner with Lord Halton, he had some genies.
Named the hero at their largest castle Lord Haart and gave him his portrait, that's not relaly a buff, but nice for flavor.
>Sorceress
Added a Sorceress Castle in the forest, with Sir Ector, he starts with some extra elves and archery items.
Added portals that led up to the mountains with a barbarian hero with a dwarf theme, he has the three elemental damage reducing items, wizard and warlock towns that can't be upgraded, but can produce steel golems, griffins and gargoyles, and there are some extra cottages around there.
Did the same thing I did with Lord Haart for Sorceress, but with Sister Eliza.
