I have a hard time keeping all the Wily fights in my head, but for some reason I seem to recall MM2, MM3, and *maybe* MM4 being the most enjoyable. I just played MM8 so that's still fresh in my mind - it's not bad.

I swear, Megaman must've been the original case of "let's reuse Morrigan's sprites from 1994 all the way up to 2001". That would be like using Mario's SMB1 sprite in SMB3.

There are almost no rooms in the game in which enemies are placed in such a way that they're even the least bit threatening.

Also I hope whomever was in charge of choosing color palettes got fired because good god there are so many awful color choices its ridiculous.

I'll give you Wily 1 and 4 (and on thinking about it, I'll give you 3 because of the fucking boss), but there's nothing horrible about crash man's or quick man's stages. If anything, air man's stage belongs on the crap tier list before those two.

I agree with you on the items except for the crash bomber. Sure, you never had any reason to shoot enemies with it, but it was cool being able to break open the walls with it.

>> No.2453610

All of the classic megaman games have problems. Whether its shitty/overpowered weapons, shit bosses, shit levels, etc.

There isn't a single megaman game where every level is fine, every boss is fine, and every weapon is balanced.

The biggest problem with most of them is that they just didn't do anything different or unique. You look at MM6 and MM1, and mechanically there isn't any significant difference between them.

9 and 10 are my favorites because they trimmed all the unnecessary shit and just focused on good level and boss design. Capcom kept trying to make MM better by adding new shit, when they should have just done what they did hear. Focus on polishing what they already had.

For the "true" classics, 2 and 3 are pretty much about the same. They both have some glaring flaws that really bring down the game. 4 isn't too bad, but you could tell they were starting to run out of ideas. Charged shot could have been interesting, but you never really need it. 5 and 6 are just uninspired. Nothing stands out as being particularly bad, but you can just tell Capcom shoved those games out to rake in money.

>> No.2453901

has there ever been a romhack that put all the weapons from all the games into one game?

or all the stages?

>> No.2454094

>>2453090
>I'll give you 3 because of the fucking boss
Wily 3's crap cause it barely registers as a stage.

fall down -> jump right 3, 4 times? -> spike drop -> go right into boss door

Pretty much the same as Heat Man's stage, less annoying, but there's nothing to it. It's dickish by putting all those crash walls in with powerups behind them. Waste Crash Bomber here, don't refill since you never use it save for breaking walls, get to Boobeam in the next level and... fuck.

>>2453090
>Sure, you never had any reason to shoot enemies with it
They one-shot the tin can enemies for the whole 2-3 stages they show up in... one of which is Crash Man's stage iirc.

>>2453610
>The biggest problem with most of them is that they just didn't do anything different or unique.
GB 4 added the shop system, in-engine and newly drawn cutscenes, has a unique robot master select screen and selection style, and had really really good stage design. It shook things up, as did GB 5.

Those are refinements and some minor enhancements. On a core mechanical level, the game remains the same.

Something new would be like the wall jump in Megaman X. The limited vertical mobility that offers totally changes the way you can design levels and bosses.

The slide introduced in Megaman 3 could have been used to do something like that, but few levels rarely used it other than "here's a part where you slide", and if you took it out, the game wouldn't change at all. Although some bosses were designed with the slide in mind, so that's good.

But that was Megaman 3. After that, nothing significant changed in Megaman. The time and effort they spent on adding a bunch of bells and whistles could have, at the very least, been spent just working on designing levels and bosses around things they are already familiar with.

That's why I think Megaman 9 and 10 are so good. Strip away all the fluff, and they know how to work with the fundamentals. Jumping and shooting, and how to make that fun and engaging.

>Strip away all the fluff
Sliding and charging are in way more MM games than are not, so I don't see how anybody could call them fluff. 9 and 10 not even having sliding really put me off of them. They really didn't do a good job with the difficulty or fun factor. Inti basically OD'd on false nostalgic memories made a MM2 clone based off of them. 10 was somewhat better but still pretty annoying to play.

>You're complaining about shit weapons and you say 4 is good?
Charge Shot: nice all around weapon
Dust Crusher: Good easy fire power weapon
Drill Missile: Good if properly detonated
Ring Boomerang: Spammable, pierces so good
Dive Missile: Homing, surprisingly effective on certain enemies
Skull Barrier: First melee shield weapon and really useful in many spots
Flash Stopper: Freaking great.
Pharoah Shot: Powerful and can act as overhead shield
Rain Flush: Really good
Wire: underutilized and not so great, but it can do 1 line of damage to enemies above you so that's something?
Balloon: A comfier Item 1
Rush: shit

Dunno, to me it looks like one of the best weapon lineups the series had to date and would have until many years later.

The slide didn't add anything to the game aside from making it a bit faster. Some bosses you have to use it to dodge attacks, but that's it.

Take it away, nothing really changes at all. Only they no longer have to put the requisite "slide here" segments in levels, which allowed them to focus on actual level design.

It wasn't until maybe 4 and 5 GB that they actually managed to use it in interesting ways, and more solidly justified its existence.

There's tons of redundancy in this list though. Vs mega man 2 which offers nearly an identical line up, only with more variety in their execution.
