I have to say though, if I weren't emulating, this replay never would have happened. There's just sooo much backtracking and random battle grind in the early game it's nauseating. Less so at 9001x speed. Thank Eva for that fastforward button. I was able to do just about everything in 3 evenings.

I will also settle for Bleu/Deis :D

Nice that you mentioned this game OP, i just played I and II for the first time a few days ago.

In my opinion the first is crude and unpolished, as expected to be, yet somewhat fun and interesting, the atmosphere of the world is on point, not too dark and sad, not too bright and colorful. The ost is alright too. The dragon transformation system could have been better, and 'morph' is too op.

II in my opinion was much better, it has a GREAT story, it's so immersive and interesting, it can make you happy, sad or angry. It's a beautiful and powerful story that has a very mature theme. The music is amazing, it fits the dark atmosphere so well. The summon system was good too but they made the same mistake of the first game where the dragons do fixed damage.
I love this game, the ost, the characters, the art style, the houses, the monsters, the bosses...
And the build up to the final battle is one of the most intense i have ever seen, that place that looks like the depths of hell, that dark music, the death/suffering of many characters that you witnessed, everything makes you truly want to destroy Evan and end the suffering, unlike many other games were you just destroy the final boss because he is the final boss, all the things that happen through the game make you really want to fuck his day up.

There are many moments of the game that feel so intense they give you goosebumps, but the two most remarkable moments of the game for me that i'll never forget are:
When you face Barubary again, it feels so intense, the monster that could have smashed you like a flea when you were a small kid, but choose to let you live so you could one day meet him again, it's like he wanted you to become strong and defeat him one day

Two is full of opportunity costs and miss-able shit, and feels a lot more like roleplaying. You're half right about the dragons having fixed damage. The MAX damage is fixed, but Ryu will only do a fraction of that based on the % of missing MP. It was great for keeping you from spamming the most powerful attack. I think they nailed the creepy/evil/demonic theme right from the start with that genius childhood scene and the eerie eyeball and sound effects and talk of this morally ambiguous god. Story is compelling the whole way through. At no point do you stop caring about what's happening. Most goosebump moment for me? Maybe the evrai scenes where you can't leave the city and have no clue how to get out or where to go, and suddenly everyone's giving you that weird laugh and saying "brr it's cold", then right after that when Habaruku straight up kills two story characters during a sermon. I thought that was kind lame at the same time because your fight against Tiga is unwinnable and I put a HURTIN' on that dude. Then he just goes and dies like a bitch to a boss that you can trounce with ease. Straw that broke the camel's back? W/e long as he takes his hands off my waifu.

OH and Katt is hot. Looking at the art that came out with this game though, almost every female character is hot.

Bleu/Deis had some hilarious dialogues in BoF1, but in BoF2 since she's kind of a secret character, she hardly says a thing for the whole game. Still hella overpowered though :D. At least her house in BoF2 is kind of funny by itself. Did you notice the place was littered with her shed skins and what I can only assume is empty bottles of wine or some other alcohol?

Though the gameplay of BoF3 is kinda neat the master system was a cool idea BoF3's dragon transformation system I feel is the best in the series there's all sorts experimental stuff you can do with it.

There's also some of the smaller stuff like the fairy village for one.

Damage dealt by dragon forms in 2 doesn't vary in proportion (based on max dragon damage and max MP of the caster) to remaining MP of the caster, which would have made dragon forms overpowered. It rather scales exponentially. Outside of full MP caster dragon forms are not that useful.

BoF gets a few threads now and then, even if it's stuff like post dead series threads. I've always liked the BoF games. BoFI is as basic as it gets but there's some charm to its simplicity. BoFII I never paid much attention to and thought it was just meh up until I replayed it with the retranslation and now it's my favorite in the series.

It's been too long since I last played III and IV and I don't think I can judge them fairly anymore. I keep starting III but I can't stick with it, even though I considered it my favorite before BoFII. It's too bad I'm OCD with games and will only play IV after beating III but I can remember loving IV.

If anyone reading this plays or re-plays BoF3, I recommend doing a mage-Ryu run. Have him be Lvl 1 until Mygus becomes available as Master (after Nue), then Emitai. You can do Deis/Ladon if you want. Make sure to get Magic Ball from Mygas before you leave the area for the first time, and it would be helpful to get Tyhoon as well

Ryu as mage is a fun way to replay it. He's a really good one, and he's always with the party, and he gets enough MP to be able to cast his support spells and heals without worrying, and Magic Ball does decent damage.

I love BoF to pieces but the only one I haven't finished is 3. Every time I try I just get irritated with kid Ryu and Nina, that part of the game just goes on way too long. I would honestly rather play any other game in the series again.

the game opens up with you killing innocent miners because you perceived your life was in danger, the miners were just doing their job, it really sets the entire story up for what is to come because the entire point of the story revolved around whether or not anything Myria did for the world was actually an evil thing.

Rei and Teepo are thieves but they steal to survive, the villagers sees them as a nuisance but Ryu is persuaded otherwise (Rei saying they wouldn't harm another living being on the job, they're just stealing food)
The Nue was considered a nuisance to the villagers but as it turns out the Nue was only just acting for the benefit of its already-dead children, it was only doing what it could.

it pretty much tackles most of the initial part of the narrative, but if you've played BoF3 through its entirety you can probably remember a lot more events that encompasses the gray area.

other notable events is when you have to end the life of Palet's mother, who was in the process of being revived through the use of Chrysm running amok in the plant. Through the sole benefit of himself he was only doing what he could to revive his dead mom. He acted for the benefit of self.

Garr was created to slaughter the brood, and through Myria he was convinced the Brood was a race that must be exterminated. But when the Brood showed no signs of resistance whatsoever he started to question his own actions and Myria's intentions.

While traveling through the shitty ass desert Nina falls ill, but with you stuck in the desert help wasn't going to arrive anytime soon. You the player ends up making the decision to kill your only ride away from a desert you could very well die from so that Nina can surive. You risk everyone's lives for the sake of one person's life.

Emitai and his family throws a convincing performance begging you and your party to throw the match so that he can win the cash prize for his sickly daughter. You the player ends up kicking his ass anyways. Even though there wasn't any choice to begin with, the game was kinda giving you an ultimatum: either forfeit and save the life of one sickly girl or kick Emitai's ass and save yourselves from Balio and Sunder.

And then there's Myria herself. She explains how everything she did was for the sake of the world, cause if it weren't for her the desert would've killed everyone by now. Everything Ryu's been through leaves him with a tough decision which is either staying at Eden forever until he dies and keep letting Myria keep watch over the world, or fight against Myria because he wants to live life how he wants to.

Ultimately, the good end has you choosing the latter, which results in the final boss fight. You could say after all this that everyone was acting for the sake of themselves, and Myria was acting for the sake of the whole world, but at the end of the day no one was doing anything wrong nor evil.

BoF4 kinda tried to do something similar but failed miserably because everyone still wants to kill Yuna.

BoF3's story is one that often flies over people's heads because >RPG narrative. But if you look at it closely you can tell they didn't slack when making it.

tl;dr: Ryu goes on a quest in search of his origins, goes through shit that makes him think about the definition of good and evil. Inevitably ends up throwing a middle finger to everyone cause he just wants to fucking live for the sake of himself, just as everyone he's met through the whole game has been doing before.

but that's why 4 excels though. The whole point was that Fou and Ryu's separate paths showed them the best and worst humanity had to offer which changed their outlook on life. It's not about Yuna it's about Fou and Ryu.

Ryu saw plenty of shit but to him the bad people where aberrations, Rasso massacring the children was seen as a horrible act by his own countrymen (Ursula) and the party was there to give him a sense of belonging.

Fou Lu was on hos own and even though he saw some good in people like Mami they where similarly aberrations to him. He was hunted without mercy, innocent people got drawn into it, he was magic nuked and his girl murdered and tortured to fuel it and the emperor when given one last chance for mercy breaks on the centuries old promise and tries to kill him when his back is turned

Eventually the two come to a head and we're given the choice. Destroy the bad people at the cost of the good, or protect the good at the risk of letting the bad go unpunished.

In both cases both sides have valid points and you can see where each one is coming from. Fou's not wrong to want to punish the wicked but his madness is too much, and Ryu for all his desire to protect is only one man and can't do everything and save everyone from all the horrors that exist.

We simply don't see enough of Myria to not see her anything more than a crazy fascist. There's not doubt that she's sincere but there's no real evidence to suggest she's even remotely right in any regard. Hell the brood allowed themselves to be slaughtered at her hand, which really doesn't paint her in a good light. And the shit with Teepo comes completely out of left felt in the last act

and the problem is we never get inside her head. We don't see WHY she thinks that just that she does. It's boring.

A villain needs a motivation but that motivation also needs weight. Fou goes kill crazy too but we see him. We experience it all first hand and we see him break over the course of the game. the game goes out of the way to show what makes him come to his conclusion.

As for Myria we know she fears the brood but we never see why. the game goes out of the way to make the brood look like Martyrs

So I think it's time we talk about the Dragon Tear! I'm not really sure how that effects gameplay. Like, there's one in each character's status screen. The one in dialogue boxes changes colors based on events and player replies, but does that change the color of the on on the status screens? Does it effect Condition? Or Guts? And what exactly does Guts do? Or condition for that matter? I found it astoundingly easy to play through this game multiple times without ever finding the answer to these questions. Very little conveyance. I'll bet the answers were tucked away in the game manual or something.

If you blame Bosch for stealing (after Trout), his mood drops down and he replies differently after each accusation up to some amount where it stalls and you are forced to stop. I didn't see anything previous done differently affecting the main events, shame on the developers.

It's some sort of visualization of mood and the latter affects gameplay in several cases. At Wildcat being not polite results in worse mood of the owner which is shown as a Dragon Tear of a different color. Mood droping below a threshold results in him treating current party to a meal which increases max HP by 16 instead of teaching Chopchop skill to overworld party leader. If you were polite before reaching him but still desire HP bonus, by looking at the color you can approximately determine if you've passed the threshold or not and, if it's the latter, continue accusing him.

Barose citizen which can be found in the dream can teach many spells and each of those, as I remember, lies in its own mood range.

Guts by leveling up.

Condition changes through the game (didn't you notice?) randomly(?) and I have only assumptions about it. But it's not exactly or at all by leveling up like other stats. Steroids for it (CondUp) are also of temporal effect. They cause Super (absolute best) Condition at mid level for some time. Super itself has different levels and thus can come better naturally than provided by steroids at fixed level. There is no equipment that buffs Condition. There is ILL (absolute worst) Condition only when you are cursed. After the curse is cured, Condition becomes whatever(?) but better and changes as usual.
