It was my first fighter i digested and took seriously.

I was droped into a world of options grove grove to 1,2,3 character teams. plus character ratio.

I loved it. so complex yet so simple.
the groves made it very deep even picking the same team in a different grove ment the player was going to try different shit.

about a year after this 4 came out and i've been hooked on fighters forever.

I remeber seeing this title in the arcade and thinking "i wish i could push the buttons as fast as these guys so i could be good at the game"

I can't tell if you're joking or not, but the actual in-house Capcom fighting department that developed all their 90s fighters was essentially dead after the release of CvS2. That's why they released no fighting games from then until Street Fighter 4 in 2008, which wasn't actually developed in-house. It was outsourced because, like I said, their fighting department was dead. Everyone in it had left the company.

Avoid this game at all costs, it was shit. This was made at the point in time when SNK had no idea where to go to KOF. The only good thing about the game was "new" fighters that aren't in every fucking SNK or Capcom game like Tessa and Goenitz.

KOF 98 Anniversary Edition, by EGHT.
It's not on Mame set, it can only be played in a different version of Kawaks, "Kawaks Ultra Plus" or something, iirc.
It also requires doing something with the .dat files, but I don't remember what.

I was going to offer a zip with my folder but I Look it up and try it, if you can't find it or get it to work just ask and I'll try to help.

Also, it's a fun hack, but be aware that some things are kinda broken, like sound effects for the new characters, for example.

That's 9 characters in a cast of 36, so 25% of it's cast. Mr. Karate (with the mask on) was technically never in kof at that point, and Violent Ken is made up, but I'm not counting those guys.
CVS1 was literally "KOF vs SF: Featuring Nakoruru and Morrigan."
CVS2 was more varied than 1, but that game's cast was pretty big, I believe SvC was more varied as far as percentage goes. Though I don't recall how many characters CvS2 had nor how many non kof/sf characters, but they weren't much iirc.

Then the Capcom side would look woefully out of place. I didn't like a single aspect of the game. Even most of the artwork bothered me. Some of it okay, but for the most part...well, take a look at Ryu.

I remember when the game was going through the unveiling process, the general crowd bemoaned the artwork. Guile's in particular was bemoaned due to his forearm being a completely different color than the rest of his arm in a way that wasn't convincing as shading.

Wasn't that NONA? Yeah, his stuff was really hit or miss during this time but when it hit it fucking Hit. I love that he's willing to take risks with the characters and do really expressive, almost abstract kinda weirdness. You do still end up with shit like this sometimes, though.

He toned it down a little for 2k2 and I thought that was much more acceptable, despite still not being a big fan.

The problem isn't even his art, but have you seen his designs? Not only are most of his new characters atrocious things that shouldn't be in a fighting game, but he also redesigned the classic characters in the gayest ways possible. Just look up the MI2 alt costumes in case you haven't seen them.

I admit some of those costume those costumes looked rather cool and made some pretty clever homages to other characters, but the majority of them were just hideous.

I'll give you Nagase because Falcoon wished to be the little girl, but what was wrong with any of the other characters? Alba and Soiree aren't really out of place. They look a hell of a lot like those two new dudes next to Ingrid in >>2441072 actually. Soiree is a duster and armband away from God Hand's Gene. I get the feeling that what rubs people the wrong way about their design is that they were created in a time where you didn't have to distill a character to the basics to maintain readability; you can't do this with most characters designed nowadays. You get accused of being overdesigned or too busy. I can see the criticism working for some things, but not here. Meh.

I'm going to ignore your comments on the alt costumes, because they're fucking Alt Costumes. Shit don't count. It was sure as hell better than that 'Rigging model' bullshit in the first game. My only complaint on MI2's design is that they turned B. Jenet into a titty monster and ruined her dress.

Maybe that's pretty much it. A lot of those characters did look overdisegned and needlesly flashy. Even the default costumes for some Classics were added needless details, like Iori and Clark having nonsensical zipper things covering the back of their paints, or Terry having that poach. Those are just examples off the top of my head, and while they're nothing too bad, you can see that it's just adding needless detail for the hell of it.
Since you mentioned Soiree, he's also very similar in looks to Shen Woo, a character created around the same era. But Soiree has much more "fabulousness" to his design, from all the frill in his clothing, to the cowboy hat on his back and his rather loud and bright color scheme. Shen on the other hand, had much more somber colors, and was less detailed. At the end of the day, Shen Woo kinda looks like a stylized street brawler, while Soiree looks more like some some fabulous cowboy cosplayer.
Alba was basically a self insert, Minon and Ninon were moe/lolita as hell, the TKD chick was alright, but needlesly suffered from Falcoon's white strands hair fetish, I guess Jivatma goes withouth saying, Butterfly chick basically had Chizuru's role but with a more over the top design and was also an alien, and I don't remember all the others tbh. I thought Duke was cool, his design was more straight to the point and somewhat looked like a classic SNK boss.


I don't see how Alt Costumes are completely invalid though. Alt colors/textures, sure. But the default "Another" costumes, regardless of being optional, still shows Falcoons mindset on character design, and to be fair, I actually liked some alts more than the defaults.
Ninon looked much better with the Kimono than the lolita dress, Another Terry (Normal, not MOTW) looked sorta cool, and I actually like Another Mai better than her classic design, to name a few.

He let me down with Athena I guess; 2k3's outfit was just too damn cute to follow up with another uniform and that other one. Mai's was neat since it was Hokutomaru's, yeah.

Some weeks ago I was with a friend playing it (with arcade sticks) and most of the time I couldn't do anything interesting with any character (even hadoukens didn't always come out), meanwhile my friend picked up M.Bison (japanese Vega) and just doing a down+C combo was pulling a cheap low sliding kick all the time, and that took quite a lot of damage.
We're not pros or anything but c'mon. Is M.Bison that OP in the game? Is there something I was skipping?
Next day we loaded King of Fighters '99 Dream Match (KOF '98) and I felt it was miles better. I could do a lot of stuff with most of the characters and all the fights were more balanced. If someone started to cheap out the other would find an strategy or character to counter and every fight felt like an advancement over the previous one.
As I said, we're no pros or anything, but KOF98 felt a million times better.
Also the graphics, CVS2 has some weird shit mixed (like hi-rez 3d bgs with sprites like the Morrigan one) while KOF98 feels very coherent (it's got 3d bgs in the DC version but they blend wonderfully)
