Night Warriors and Vampire Savior are both good, and they're different enough to stand apart on their own merits. The original Darkstalkers doesn't hold up well, but it has some funny quirks and an odd sort of charm. Savior 2 and Hunter 2 are just shittier versions of Savior. Chronicle is weird and inaccurate to the games it's supposedly representing. It's like if Super Mario All-Stars was just Super Mario Bros. 3 with some bad recreations of Mario 1, LL, and 2 level layouts thrown in as extra worlds.

I think the first game is the most balanced, it's also a bit slower paced which is more my style. I've heard this criticism about it before but I think what people really trying to say is that it doesn't have BB Hood, Q-Bee, and Hsien-Ko.

If you crank it up to its fastest speed setting, the first one can actually be the fastest in the entire series. But I don't think many people tried to play it on that speed. The few times it still gets tournaments they run on the middle speed. I will say that I think the first game has the best presentation in the series. The whole monster move vibe really comes through well in everything. The stages' original color schemes are also a lot better than the Night Warriors recolors.

On the subject of the first Darkstalkers game, here's a video about it released back in the day by Japanese arcade gaming magazine Gamest. Features narration by Demitri's voice actor Nobuyiki Hiyama. There's a similar video for Night Warriors in which Morrigan's voice actress Yayoi Jinguji also joins in on the narration, but it doesn't seem to be view able online anywhere.

Yes, the Saturn port would be preferable to the PS1 one. As with pretty much any Capcom fighter of that generation.

The PS2 Darkstalkers Collection is also really good. Has accurate ports all 5 of the original arcade releases, plus full 18 character roster versions of all 3 of the Vampire Savior-based titles. Also the first release in which Darkstalkers 1 Huitzil and Pyron were playable without hacking.

Hunh, I always thought the first game even on the fastest setting wasn't that much speedier than SF II Turbo. The fact that there's no real break between rounds in Savior does make it seem like it goes a lot quicker and for some reason just really throws me off.
But my real gripe is that the first game is really the only one where all the characters are more or less balanced. Some of the cast they added in the later games were just broken, Jedah is probably the biggest offender but I dunno characters like Victor an Anakaris only really seemed viable in the first game. Granted I haven't played against a human player in a long ass time, I just really struggled with beating the later games, especially with those two characters, even though Victor is my preferred main and I have no problem clearing the first game with him, but now I'm wondering if it's not just because the first one is the easier game?

Broken as in not working right? Jedah is one of the shittier characters in Savior. Even if you only play vs the AI, his AI is probably the worst and most predictable of them all.

Saturn version was great for the day and for playing for fun, but you wouldn't want to run a tournament using it. It really isn't arcade perfect.

Of course if you only care about more content then Chronicle and/or PS2 have the most content, just keep in mind PS2 will run at 480i instead of 240p.

As a Jedah main I can tell you he's one of the shittiest characters, he doesn't even have all that advantage against most characters in the meta, and his supers while being pretty strong are really easy to avoid and leave you wide open for punishment.
Now, Victor on the other hand is a monster if you can get him working right, same with B.B. Hood/Bulleta.

It is also the last great 2D fighting game from CapCom, all the other were just Mugen-like rehashes of CapCom VS Marvel or CapCom VS SNK or CapCom VS Your Mom.
Sadly, there will never, NEVER be a new Darkstalkers game, with new creatures from every folklore, it would sell like cakes, but CapCom prefer to release another RE HD remake instead.

Also, what about Vampire Chronicles on Dreamcast?

Saturn version runs at 32px lower resolution so some graphics are slightly different and so is the aspect ratio.

You also have the VS2 characters already there by default. But, I'm pretty sure the rest of the cast plays like in VS1, however (Buletta for sure - she has a huge delay at the start of her combo super in VS2, which is not there in the Saturn game).

Also some voices are lower quality and a few tracks sound slightly different as they were ported to use the Saturn synth instead of streaming audio. This was necessary to keep loading speeds up - the game plays the synth tune already in memory on the character select screen, versus screen, and win quote screens, while it is also loading the game from the disc.

And all of those are just technical differences. I don't know if it has any significant gameplay ones, other than the 3 extra characters being available.

The PSP version is the same as the Dreamcast version. It's sort of like Hyper Street Fighter 2 in that you can pick modes based on each game, but said modes don't actually recreate the source games all that well. Even the Vampire Savior mode characters have a lot of inaccuracies.
>I wonder why did they make her blonde on VH's intro.
I think it was part of the whole recolor thing Capcom occasionally did to signify updates of games' Like how in Super Turbo Ryu's default color became black with yellow headband. everyone's default color became different in VH/NW, and that even carried over to their win portraits. I guess they decided to do the same thing with Morrigan in the intro, but it ends up looking odd for two reasons: One, everyone else in the intro is using their original colors. And two, that isn't even her new default color, it's one of the other alternates.

PS2 has more delay in versus, but less delay in training, considering this is a fighting game versus is more important. It has more content, but few people play DS1, VH2, and VS2. PS360 also has GGPO online which is always a plus. The training in mode in both is the best addition, since proper training modes for VS and VH aren't that easy to find. You get some features with PS360 that you don't get with PS2 and vice versa. You can also get a script for MAME to have a training mode, but that gives you different features than the console versions would.

PS2 would be the best way to do that. The issue here is you aren't getting 240p out of that. Saturn will look nicer on a CRT even if less accurate.

Most people that are big on playing VSav care more about arcade accuracy than the extra 3 characters.

If you want the training mode either PS2 or Resurrection will do. You can also get a decent MAME training mode, but it won't be as fully featured as the console versions. For online just play on Fightcade. There are more people there than on Resurrection.

Well, reading some wikis around I think they just mean VS on Saturn became obsolete because the PS2 and PS360 versions came out and have more content I guess. But then I'm also reading these versions have input lag and also the whole 240p/480i issue.
I wonder if there is any actual inaccuracy on the Saturn version, as far as I can tell from playing it and the original on mame, I can't notice the difference in gameplay. I can when I play VS2, but I prefer 1.

But Resurrection actually has less content. Vsav there only has the Arcade characters, not the old characters like the Saturn version. When it comes to competitive standards, arcade accuracy>content.

I trust what the fighting game people have to say about this stuff. They take accuracy and performance pretty seriously.

>What version is the most played online? 1 or 2?

VS is far more popular than VS2. VS2 doesn't even come in Resurrection. If I were you I would just play VS on Fightcade. If you have an older ATI graphics card you can use CRT EmuDriver to get it to output the correct resolution. Would look really nice on something like a PVM, and you get the added bonus of modern netplay.

I think by extra content they meant training modes and online play, yeah the Saturn has the 3 extra chars + Shadow, and the PS1 even got another extra character, marionette, but PS1 is the less accurate of the bunch, with missing animation frames and all. I still haven't come across any information regarding differences between Saturn and arcade gameplay-wise, as I said to me it plays just like VS1 on mame, but I might be missing stuff since I'm not a pro at this and I only play a few characters.

Looking back without context it's easy to think Savior 2 and Hunter 2 were just another one of Capcom's slightly-tweaked fighting rehashes. But the primary player base in Japan had a very, very bad reaction to it at the time. The split roster deal was bad enough, let alone all the "rebalancing" that just made everything worse. Not even bringing back the 3 previously-dropped characters was enough to hold people's interest. Then there's the fact that you had a good number of people who preferred Hunter to Savior. When they heard that a "Vampire Hunter 2" was coming out, obviously they got excited. Then were summarily disappointed when they found that it was just a shittier version of Savior with a slightly different roster. To this day, long-term Japanese players of the series still view Savior 2 and Hunter 2 with disdain. Many of them even credit those titles with killing the series (and they might have a point, given that every release since then has been some sort of port of the previous games).

All the tracks feel like dance remixes of their original counterparts on Vampire Hunter.
I especially loved Demitri and Victor's themes on DS1.

And also, that reminds me on Tatsunoko vs Capcom's original japanese release, Morrigan (or rather her stage, the Aensland castle) got also a remix of her theme, but in the american version "ultimate all-stars" where they remade all the music, her stage got a nice gothic tune with harpsichord that actually sounds like it'd fir on DS1's soundtrack

I checked and that page is from the Secret File flyer, which can be viewed in full here: http://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=2043

I did find the scans of All About Vampire Savior I mentioned earlier and am currently uploading them. It's missing the last ~100 pages though, which seems to be where most of the "fluff" material is (story notes, sheet music, etc.)
