but then

I had to get help to beat La-Mulana, I couldn't do some parts of it on my own ;_;

it was fun exchanging hints back then though

when I sort of had friends

This. I don't see how why a guide is even needed. The game is very straightforward and simple.

>> No.2430180

Every Dragon Quest game.

I'm horrible about using guides, honestly. If I'm playing any game for more than like 3 or 4 hours at a time and get stuck I'll break down and look up what to do next, or check to see if I missed something.

>> No.2430190

I don't see how La Mulana is possible guide-less.

The puzzles combined with the unforgiving nature of the game make it simply too hard for its own good, in my opinion.

>> No.2430195

Hands down one of my most used. There was a lot of things to figure out in this game and being young didn't help.

not really dog, it's pretty non-linear and open-ended. This is a good thing of course, but as the game starts getting bigger and bigger, the need for a guide gets stronger

I think I finally broke down and used a guide to find the green monster that takes up half the screen. For some reason I figured they wouldn't hide anything in an elevator room.

James Bond - The Stealth Affair

Specifically, the part where you get thrown in the ocean, and you need to be wearing a life jacket under your tuxedo and then deflate it in order to make the rope you're tied with loose enough to escape.
Spoiler alert: if you didn't get the life jacket an hour earlier in a completely unrelated location, you're dead from the moment you get on the boat.

>> No.2431117

Just beat this quite recently, and had to use a guide for quite a bit of Maridia and only a couple bits of other areas. I've never used a walkthrough for any of the other 2-D Metroids, but even with a guide Super Metroid is still one of my favourites.

his name is Kraid
after a while you learn where things might be hidden in metroid games and just check by default, you've got infinite bombs and it's easy to refill power bombs so it doesn't really cost you anything to check

There's a couple parts here and there where I was never going to figure out (the zodiac order thing, for one -- apparently, you can get the answers from a guard if you spend some gald for each one, but it's not even clear that they're the answers).

oh, and leaving the very first town is mildly confusing the first time around (you need to find some passports, and the game doesn't tell you shit on where to go or where they might be)

>> No.2431178

Used a guide the first time I played MGS. Still had a blast but afterwards I really felt like I cheated myself out of an awesome experience.

I try very hard now to never use a guide unless it's a last resort and only for the part I'm stuck on.

La-Mulana is the worst offender in this regard. I love the aesthetics and the atmosphere, but the obtuse nature of the puzzles combined with bad platforming, combat, and a lack of convenience features (limited amount of tablet text saves), makes it a chore without a guide.

I use walkthroughs for a large majority of games I play, especially retro. I still cannot beat some games - mostly stuff like Mario and the original Kirby - but that's due to skill level.

I could only beat Mario 64 with a walkthrough. It's so confusing finding the stars

Most RPGs I'll have to consult a walkthrough for a part or two. For Zelda I had to use a guide for most of the game. They went a little too far in the emphasis on exploration. The Chrono games are another series I have to use guides for. They are way too vague in telling you what you need to do in those games.

Only for the sidequests. The main storyline was about as straightforward as it gets.

>>2435615
Yeah, I can understand needing a walkthrough for Phantasy Star. It was decent at telling you what you needed to do if you wrote down what every single NPC ever said (outside of the few times where you have to think for yourself), but nobody does that shit. The fact that some of the NPCs lie isn't too helpful either.

Great game, though.

Those bloody Dezolians? There's a guy who blatently says that everybody on the other side of town is a liar. Should be pretty easy to tell which side considering some of the tall tales they spin.
