2428795 No.2428795 [Reply] [Original]

This is one of the best 2D platformers ever and still beats 95% of modern platformers, share your love for DKC 2 here.

Well it's not Rad Gravity but it's fine I guess

>> No.2428821

Deserves all the praise it gets.

The biggest criticism of the DKC games is that it's style over substance, but I feel like that's something only people who haven't played it say. Yes, the ad campaigns were centered around the sweet grafix, but it also had the gameplay to back it up.

>> No.2428879

It's pretty good, the game manages to ease you into it but then keeps increasing the difficulty that a lot of games don't do anymore

>> No.2428885

But the Cult of Icycalm called DKC "the beginning of inanity for platformers."

>> No.2428887

>>2428821
I played all three of them and I share that exact criticism. I enjoyed them all, even 3, but the graphics and music are the main stars of the show. The gameplay is very shallow and the platforming is pretty imprecise.

On another note, the DKCR games are infinitely better than any of the DKC games.

>> No.2428891

The only platformer I like. Beats Mario and shit like that by a mile. And I wasn't wowed by the graphics due to the fact I first played it in like 2005.

Tropical Freeze is awesome and I can give credit where it's due, putting it on equal terms with the original DKC and DKC3 (though 3 has a special place in my heart for being one of the first games I learned how to speedrun) however there's no way in hell I would play DKCR over the original three.

That's the sort of conveniently believeable claim that people would rather not spoil with any actual argumentation, lest they miss an opportunity for instant "serious gamer" self validation.

Since it's a mainstream game with unusually high production values, it MUST be shallow tripe! Were it a modern indie retro-style platformer, it would be a minimalistic, rollercoaster-like sublimation of classic platformer functional tropes.

If you're to claim stating an opinion constitutes criticism, maybe you should not rely on random words carrying any meaning on the sole apparent basis of your willingness to use them. Is the gameplay shallow because there are no real items of powerups? Because the level design is based on core gimmicks and linear obstacle escalation instead of exploration? Is the platforming imprecise because the maps are not obviously built with blocks? Is it that you judge a fast-paced game based on broad momentum, reflexes and memorization principles should be implemented through pixel perfect obstacle display instead of error threshold tweaking? Dude, make a case; it's healthier for you and more fun for everybody.

DKC3 is pretty meh, tho.

DKC2 > DKC1 > DKC3
I like all three games, but 2 is just amazing. The boss fights are pretty lousy though, but at least they're better than the boss fights from DKC1.

The soundtrack is fucking great. Probably my favorite video game soundtrack ever. Nothing beats Aquatic Ambiance from DKC1 but the soundtrack overall is better and more memorable than the one from the other DKC games.

DKC3 is...An acquired taste.

Interestingly, it's a game that I find plenty of non-Donkey Kong fans tend to enjoy, whether it's the different art direction or clever obstacle level design (some naysayers would argue "gimmicks")

All things considered, it's a very SMART sequel. DKC2 hit it's landmark perfectly, so how could you possibly live up to it? You don't, instead you create your own identity. A new atmosphere, new headlining animal buddies, new camp-like music, new exceptionally crazy enemy designs, a hub world styled map based on item collection, and the air of the game itself felt less perilous than something like DKC2, which encouraged, and allowed for more amusing interaction between different characters in the world of DKC3, since for a SNES game it was surprisingly talkative. Even the ending itself was pretty funny.

Also I thought it was cool that they made Dixie the main star of DKC3, it goes back to the point of it's own identity, but it also solidified Dixie as a legitimate Donkey Kong/video game character, enough to come back in the later DK games like Tropical Freeze (sucks that she didn't make it in DK64 or the Smash games, she was always my favorite DK character)

>Ugly as sin

I discovered SNES gaming through a later life (I was white trash so I only owned a Genesis) and games like Star Fox and Super Mario RPG were 100x uglier.

Honestly, it wasn't until I discovered 4chan that there was some stigma against DKC being ugly, I always loved the backdrops and level transitions in places like Jungle Hijinx. It was a very magical experience.

I have come to love the challenge of the DKC games hidden bonus barrels. Where you really get to sharpen your skills. And finding all of those barrels in 2 is a pretty good challenge. The DK coins are only moderately difficult, but fuck the one that is on the end of level barrel, I miss time it and I have to do the whole level again.

Tropical Freeze is just as good as DKC2. Take your nostalgia goggles off.

I think one thing that bothers people is the lack of Kremlings and how that artwork isn't as dark/gloomy.

In terms of level design, control, and music, Tropical Freeze is equal to, if not superior than, DKC2.

TF is pretty great, but the soundtrack isn't quite on par, IMO. Close, but not quite.

Level design is great, but the use of the most boring animal buddy is kind of annoying. Though he fits the gameplay, I suppose.

I haven't actually seen anyone ever complaining about the lack of Kremlings in TF. DKCR, yes, but not TF.
>>2429083
Eh. Tbh, the bonus rooms weren't really adding anything in DKC2, and in DKC3 they were downright annoying. Simplifying them was a laudable decision.
>>2428997
'Objectively', I think that DKC2's Kong-team worked better from a gameplay perspective, but in terms of level design, I actually rank DKC3 slightly higher. and I definitely enjoy it (Slightly) more. Ace soundtrack, too, even though I know that subject is somewhat divisive.

The character- and especially enemy design in 3 is /really/ hit and miss (Far more misses than 2 has), but for some reason this has never really bothered me.

And I don't mind gimmicky levels. Well. If I did object to them, I'd have to hate DKC2, too.

It's perfectly fair to say that Kiddy Kong sucked as a character, and that DKC3 has an excrutiatingly slow start, but beyond that... A fantastic game.

>bonus rooms
The DKCR bonus rooms are fine at first, but the fact they are repeated almost exactly throughout the game is a negative. Perhaps a bit similar to DKC in this regard.

Not that it really matters, but those renders were not done in regular "old" PCs, but high-performance graphics workstations, which were a thing back then. Even if the general modeling is a bit crude and unsophisticated for today standards, in some ways they look somewhat "better" (lighting and surfacing excluded) than current stuff because the average surface polycounts in those renders - after subdivision/"smoothing" algorythms are applied - were probably still higher and more consistent throughout than what can be currently handled in real time by consoles.

Does anyone else feel it's the easiest out of the original 3? I recently replayed 1 and 2 and played 3 for the first time. I had a harder time with some of 1's platforming and random bonus room locations, and 3 has a bunch of levels that are pure bullshit.

The fight with K Rool at the end is p. hard. That final cannonball psyched me out the first time I beat him and killed me too.

This game was only okay for me. The Mario series is way better imo. DKC series feels like a rail-platformer, for the lack of a better term. Gameplay-wise, I feel like I'm constantly jumping through hoops like some circus animal.

That's the song from the git gud levels in the last world. So many hours playing those levels as a kid.

Replayed the other day and didn't have much trouble. Oh well.

ANd you have to be insane to think that Stickerbrush SYmphony isn't the best DKC soundtrack out of the whole bunch.

>TF is pretty great, but the soundtrack isn't quite on par, IMO. Close, but not quite.

You should really give TF's soundtrack another chance. It grows on you like most of Wise's music. It's absolutely on par with DKC2's soundtrack.
