Hey hey hey it's a new Dreamcast thread! What are some of the most creative ways devs have used the VMU for? I know Resident Evil games for Dreamcast show ammo and health info on VMU screen which is pretty damn useful.

The VMU incorporates two button-size batteries (CR2032) which act as a power source in standalone operation.
While connected to the Dreamcast, power is supplied by the Dreamcast.
Battery life will depend on the usage conditions of applications. Under the conditions outlined below, the batteries
will last about two weeks.
• VMU standalone operation
• LCD display on (refresh rate 1 kHz)
• No alarm output
• Communication functions not used
• No write to flash memory

Actually, just checked, and there's a buy it now for $60 that includes VMU, console, and controller. You could easily get it for less

The GD drive is notorious for failure and very hard to replace.

If you buy a Dreamcast, you really should buy an SD-Card adapter as well, and install Dreamshell.

That way you can play your games from an SD card and only use the GD drive for the bootloader.

I felt ripped in 2009 when I bought my arcade sticks now I'm glad I did.

BTW I have a question, I don't know if the mod/repair thread or this one is more adequate but I'll try here since it seems fresher.

One of my arcade sticks has an issue: somehow it got a bit stiff. When I move it (in any direction but it's a bit worse downwards) it moves fine until you hear the click more or less (when the direction gets registred). After that,t he stick has a bit more travel until reaching the edge, and in my other stick the pressure you have to apply is the same one (quite soft actually, they're very sensitive), but in the "faulty" one the rest of the travel until you reach the edge is way stiffier. I recall this not happening before, I found out some days ago when I set up my DC, and I hadn't been playing in a while.
Is there an easy fix for this? I supposed there should be, since people who are into arcade stuff tweak and do maitenance of their stuff on a more or less regular basis (also, this kind of gear is expected to be abused I suppose).
Also, is there a proper way to store them? I have them both in their boxes but I have to store them vertically because I haven't got a lot of space and I don't want to stack them (in fact I had them stacked for some time and I am afraid that could have caused this issue).

I don't know if I worded the problem very well, I hope someone here can explain me what is happening and what I can do.
Thanks in advance.

The Serial port is pretty slow, and it does bottleneck games pretty bad.

If you want to take the extra time and effort, you could also add and IDE hard drive by soldering an IDE cable to the bottom of the GDrom controller.

It's your call really, but just FYI, GDEMU doesn't bypass any region-protection, nor can it force VGA mode.
In terms of loading screens, they go almost as fast as Dreamshell with an IDE hard drive, but not quite. Personally, I would suggest going with the SD card adapter. It's slower, but cheaper, and Dreamshell has way more features, being an OS and all.

There isn't much in the way of imports that I am really into with the exception of playing through Shenmue 2 eventually, so region changing doesn't really hold as much sway for me.

As for forcing VGA, for most games it should be possible to patch the disc image itself before throwing it on the SD card. Even if it wasn't, I could always just burn a disc and grab another DC for $20 or so and not have to worry about it.

I softmodded my PS2 years ago and play 99% of its games from an internal hard drive, the option to have a large collection (up to 32GB) of games available with significantly faster load times, 100% compatibility, and zero risk of laser issues is very attractive to me.

Literally the only thing stopping me is the price and the fact that they can't be ordered right now.

I wish there was a laser assembly replacement option like DGEMU that used SATA though, since the extra size of a 2.5" hard drive and the compatibility of having a direct line through to the mobo (vs going through the slow as molasses serial port) would be amazing.

I don't know how you ended up reading the precedent posts and thinking the serial port is slow as molasses.
As people already told you, dreamshell at RC3 is already fast and RC4 seems to reach almost perfect speed.

If you just want to buy GDEMU say it, but lately dreamshell is getting seriously good.

The serial port will always be a bottleneck, it will always be slow. You will never see anything better than the 1.5mbps maximum transfer speed on stock hardware. This is too slow for a lot of games.

The serial port (for now) is pretty slow to use in Dreamshell, but if you want something faster, you can always do the IDE mod and install an IDE hard drive, or if you REALLY want to go all out, SATA is possible believe it or not, though tbh I have no idea how. I just know that it's an extra step in addition to the IDE mod.

I also have a softmodded PS2 and also a Wii.
The Dreamcast's Serial port is painfully slow in comparison to the PS2's IDE port or the Wii's USB 2.0, but it does get the job done just fine.

Also, as mentioned by other anons, Dreamshell is getting better and better at using the Serial port, but if you have your heart set on GDEMU, here's a comparison video you might want to check out comparing GDEMU to Dreamshelll via IDE.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfmuJKaFrtw

Also, don't forget, part of the reason that loading screens of any kind are so slow is because the Dreamcast CPU is slow as shit.

it's safe if you can do the mod properly.

The new BIOS chip will piggyback on top of the old one with a switch that goes between the two.

The only thing you'll be installing on the new chip is the Dreamshell bootloader, so you wont have to boot from CD every time. The actual OS will be on either SD card or IDE hard drive (whichever route you chose)

Dreamshell has a BIOS flashing program which I've never had any problems with, but if something should go wrong, you can always switch back to the Read-only SEGA BIOS and then try again.

If you just use a CD every time, then you still need a working GD drive, and using a burned disc to load Dreamshell will wear it out little by little, but you'd literally just be loading from CD for like 5 seconds every power-on, before the SD card takes over and the CD spins down, so it would help very much.

hi /vr/

>> No.2428012

>>2427983

A DC with a controller and a VMU and regular composite cables shouldn't cost you more than like $30-$40 in most places in the US.

VGA adapters are a little more rare though. More hard to find than expensive.

As for pirating games, you don't need anything more than a CD burner and some blank CDRs. Getting Dreamshell up and running for pirating from SD cards will set you back around $20 plus shipping for the SD card adapter, plus whatever the cost of the SD card you use is.

Basically, this.

An SD card isn't needed, but playing burned CD-Rs is really bad for the laser, and is a bit limiting.

If you want to buy an adapter, that's like $18 from DC-SD, plus a blank disc for the bootloader.

pretty bad. The GD drive is made for GD-ROM discs (obviously) so using CD's puts extra strain on the thing, and using burned CDs (as opposed to factory pressed CDs) makes it work extra hard to read data.

This isn't a very big deal on most consoles, but on the Dreamcast, replacement parts are damn near impossible to find, since the only systems to ever use GDs are the Dreamcast and the SEGA arcade system it was based off of.

If you can spare a few dollars, you REALLY should consider getting an SD card adapter, and installing Dreamshell

>> No.2428187

So a store I know has a Dreamcast for $40, and I could get a copy of Grandia II for $30. An old friend of mine accidentally left his Soul Reaver DC copy with me, too. Unfortunately I lack CRTVs and I didn't see many other games to stick my head out for, so I don't want to impulse buy an old console and a couple standout games willy-nilly. Anything else I should keep an eye out for when it comes to the Dreamcast?

>> No.2428189

>>2428165
>>2428096
I guess it's also worth mentioning that burned CDs are only good for games that are small enough to fit on a CD.

Skies of Arcadia for example (best DC game ever) is 2 discs long and each one holds about 1gb.

If you want to play that game, you'll have to either buy it, or use Dreamshell, because it's too big for CD.

Finally, CD loading only works for self-booting games. Not all work that way. Even if a non-self-bootable game fits on a CD, burning it to CD will just appear as a music CD on the Dreamcast.

>> No.2428196

Burned ones do.
If you make sure to burn at 4x, then it's about as good as an actual pressed CD, but not quite.

Besides, optical drives have moving parts. Using any kind of disc wears it out eventually, that's why Dreamshell exists. That's also why OpenPS2Loader, cIOS, Nintendont, and Xecutor exist.

It's not that bad at all.

It's harder for any laser to read the burned marks (as opposed to pressed pits on a retail game) on a recordable disc, but having further spaced marks compared to the compressed ones on a GD-ROM actually helps out somewhat. It's no worse than playing a burned CD in your CD player or a burned DVD in a DVD player. The actual impact compared to a GD-ROM is negligible.

Long term, like any optical disc based console, it would be best to move to a method that uses no moving parts (like GDEMU or Dreamshell), but GDEMU is $130 and Dreamshell is slow and has terrible compatibility (although this is slowly improving), so you're looking at either spending a lot of money on something that works fine but is expensive or spending very little money on something that isn't ready yet.

Basically, your best option for Dreamcast games right now is to keep burning discs like normal and wait until GDEMU (or something like it) gets cheaper, or until the compatibility and (more importantly) speed of Dreamshell over the serial port hits 100% (if ever).

For right now, a pile of cheap but high quality CDRs, a VGA adapter, and some extra VMUs are all you need to have a rock solid Dreamcast experience.

It's slowed down, but also the disc itself has pits placed closer together than a normal CD-ROM in order to fit more data.

The drive is only slowed down to make the compressed pits easier for the laser to read.

You mean a replacement laser assembly for the Dreamcast that only reads CDROMs instead of GDROMs?

forwhatpurpose.jpg?

All you would be doing is making a Dreamcast that could only read burned games, all retail disc would not function on it. At that point you'd be better off just using one of the SD card solutions.

>> No.2428585

That makes sense.

I'm not seeing the appeal on a personal level, mainly because there are games that are truly best played from a GDROM because their size means that satisfactory rips can never be made, and there are also some games that although they have been ripped, they are more niche and their rips are old or substandard, and they are best played from a retail disc as well.

Also, the joy inherent in finding an old retail disc for $2 at a yard sale or used game store, taking it home, and firing it up.

If it was cheap enough to sell as a small replacement unit I suppose you might be able to work it, but anyone smart enough to be able to remove a GD laser and solder in a CD laser is smart enough to build (or buy) their own SD card adapter, so I don't know if it would really have an audience.

> hundreds of dollars

Dreamcasts are dirt cheap (for now).

Unless you live in a country where they are super rare or something, in which case you have my pity.

>>2430673

The PS2 is pretty easy to emulate, and there were like a hundred and sixty million of them manufactured worldwide (and they are piss easy to softmod), so that console is covered.

The Xbox will never be emulatable thanks to Nvidia/Intel/OpenAL shit, but most of it's library was also available on the PC. A decent chunk of its stuff is playable on the 360, so that will buy people some time.

The Gamecube has Dolphin, and it's pretty solid. Hardware piracy is a little more difficult on a physical Gamecube, but softmodding a Wii is also pretty easy.

If you're a collector than yeah, 6th gen is going to get rough over the next few years, but if you're a gamer than it'll only get better.

The Dreamcast though, I'm not sure. Software wise it's rough to predict because literally anyone with a CD burner can have nearly any game on the system, and as time goes on Dreamshell and GDEMU are only going to get cheaper and easier to use. Hardware wise though, we might start to see some spikes I think as more people get into DC gaming due to GDEMU/Dreamshell and start looking online to buy more controllers/VMUs/consoles/etc.

Right now I have 5 VMUs and one 4X, plus a Jump Pack, plus four controllers. I'm not a collector, I just want to have enough storage space to store all of my gamesaves (at least until I get a serial port adapter), and I want to have enough controllers that if one or two of them die over the next five to ten years I won't be stuck trying to source a replacement that is in decent shape and isn't super overpriced.

If you're in the market for a fishing controller or a lightgun, I'd recommend buying it within the next year or two to save yourself some money though.

Download IMGBurn

http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/pc/other/update-v13-imgburn-2570-w-dreamcast-drivers/

After imgburn is installed, unzip the "CDI files for imgburn" file and inside you'll find three files

pfctoc.dll
pfctoc.h
pfctoc.lib

Take these and copy them directly into your imgburn install directory (which should be C:\Program Files (x86)\ImgBurn

Fire up imgburn, click "Write image file to disc" on the top left. Then click on the little folder with a magnifying glass near Source on the top left.

Find your game (most likely in .cdi format).

Set the speed on the bottom right to something like 16X if possible, it your only option is MAX don't worry about it.

Click the burn button on the bottom left and make a sandwich.

I'd make you an image tutorial but my optical drive isn't hooked up right now because I can't find a spare SATA cable.

If this doesn't work post again and we can try to do some troubleshooting.

People generally don't upload non-working rips, if you're burning coasters it's usually a problem on your end. I burned two or three coaster copies of Unreal Tournament using imgburn once and then switched to Alcohol 120% and got a working disc the first time, for example.

Answer the questions above and we can help you troubleshoot.

It's awesome. There is no reason why you shouldn't buy it.

Semi-related, I own the Dreamcast and GameCube versions of this game, and they are both compatible with Dreamshell (via SD card), and Nintendont (via USB hard drive).

Both are awesome. Buy it now.

Didn't the GC version speed up the battles a bit? Or was it the encounter rate that got lowered? Both are minor complaints of mine.

>> No.2439545

>>2439535
Kind of.

The air-ship battles (and a handful of other things) have a bit of slowdown in the Dreamcast version thanks to the uber-slow CPU.

On the Gamecube version, the whole game runs nice and fast thanks with no slowdown anywhere.

Also, loading through USB 2.0 is WAY faster than through the DC serial port

Also, the encounter rate is basically the same, except you can't encounter enemies underwater at MT. Kazai (which is very nice).

Dude, the Dreamcast's region protection is like the easiest thing to work around.Utopia will chain-load any game from any region on your console, and Dreamshell will run basically any software (official and unofficial) from an SD-card or IDE hard drive.

The bootloaders for Utopia and Dreamshell just need to be burned to a blank CD-R (preferably a good quality one)
