ITT: The highest rated games by year.

For those who don't know how Famitsu reviewing system work, they assign four players with different gaming taste to rate each game on a scale from 1 to 10 and then these four scores are accumulate to make up an overall average for up to 40.

All the top-rated games from 1986 through 1987 were Famicom only (counting Disk releases).

Been a LONG time since Famitsu had any credibility. They used to be the harshest reviewers in terms of scoring. The fact that 34/40 was the highest score for an entire year is insane. You'd never see that kind of restraint from western gaming media.

Now they're a joke and don't even hesitate to give out the once near-mythic "Famitsu perfect score".

>> No.2391947

>>2391506
There was one scan in RetroMags from late 1990 (the cover artwork was a parody of the Pretty Woman poster and the magazine itself had a preview for the SFC Final Fight), but it got lost after the site switched hosting server. I could've sworn the first issue was hosted somewhere, but my googling leads nowhere.

>>2391568
I would argue Famitsu is just "harsh" as they were back then, it's just that they're more friendly towards big budget mainstream releases.

I find some of their top rated games to be questionable though. I can understand why Contra and Ninja Ryukenden (which are both 10 worthy for me) might not be so highly regarded by Famitsu's reviewers, but there's no reason why they should be outranked by a mahjong game, Igo, a company training game and all those interchangeable sports games.

I might do separate posts for SS and PS.

Man, the Saturn really had a lot of Adventure game type stuff in Japan... including a lot of ports of PC games exclusive to japanese regions. I guess that comes from them liking adventure games but hating PC gaming.

It's a shame a lot of that stuff will stay untranslated, probably forever.

Famitsu reviews are more like consumer reports than critical evaluations of the games. They're good to gauge which games were popular or praised at the time, but they shouldn't be taken as the be-all end-all gospel of Japanese game criticism.

They probably gave Sega Rally Championship Plus a lower rating since they felt it was not different enough or fresh enough from the original.

Being a saturn fan is suffering. Nice to see PDS that high up though, I'm playing it right now and it's rad as hell. And yeah, I think the saturn still had a couple years left in japan, they were probably just desperate for the international market. So a hasty release helped contribute to the eventual downfall of their console market. A shame too, because they were the go-to consoles for arcade stuff, really.

Of course the traditional arcade is basically dead now too so maybe it's for the best. ┐(-。ー;)┌

For me, "credibility" in a review comes from whether or not the reviewer spent enough time playing the game to form a solid impression of it (generally more than half of the game) and whether or not the review reflects that.

>Famitsu were the only magazine that didn't just give out perfect scores like it was nothing.

And? Does that suddenly make their single-paragraph reviews that tell you nothing about the game worth reading? You can slap a number onto anything and idiots will pay more attention to the number than they will what it's attached to.

Review scores have always been meaningless. They're just things used by fanboys to circlejerk. A score tells you absolutely nothing of value.

This. Famitsu tended to pander to popular trends in the Japanese gaming industry at the time.

I find it more fascinating how Japanese developers weren't hesitant to explore with the first person perspective during the early days of the PS1, what with Kileak, Jumping Flash, Crime Crackers and King's Field. Hell, even the Dreamcast and original Xbox had Maken X and Breakdown respectively. I wonder why they don't experiment with the genre that much often anymore.

Re-releases and ports for the most part were rated lower by Famitsu than the originals, even if the newer releases were better or offered more content. Just look at the ratings they gave to Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil 2 and compared them to what they give to the International and Dual Shock editions respectively. They were likely reviewed by different people or they probably thought the game was not that fresh anymore back when it was first released.

Famitsu likely reviewed ports/re-releases under the assumption that most of their readers probably played the original release and were judging it based on what the new versions were offering compared to newer titles and not necessarily on whether it was a better or more accurate conversion than the previous version. From a casual standpoint, why would you want to play another version of ZERO 3 on a last gen console when Double Impact is out?

I was under the impression that ZERO 3 on the Saturn was not as good as it could've been.

>> No.2413441

>the shitty PS1 port.
Alpha 3 on PS1 was pretty impressive when it was released, given the handicap the PS1 had when it came to sprite-heavy 2D games, plus it had extra content that was carried over to subsequent releases. Just because the later Saturn and Dreamcast versions were more accurate doesn't mean the PlayStation version was shitty.

It was also the only console port of the game when it was released, so it's not like there was anything else to compared it at the time.
>PS1 version should be 30, Saturn should be 35 (or even higher)
I've never played the Saturn version of Zero 3, but I was under the impression that it was not as good as it could've been, since it required the 4 Mega RAM cartridge and it still suffered from loading times and missing animation frames. I could be wrong though.

They dropped support quickly in order to focus on the Gamecube, but for some reason Famitsu ignores some N64 games, for example the aforementioned Goemon titles.
In 2001 I remember playing Conker's Bad Fur Day at my friend's house, although I can understand Famitsu not rating that one, it never came out in Japan (I think?).
In 2001 the japan-exclusive Bomberman 64 was also released.

Front Mission and Riveria are actually 2002 releases. The Wonderswan didn't had that long of a lifespan, since practically all the third party support was dropped in 2002 and it was eventually discontinued by 2004. Shame that Final Fantasy III remake was scrapped though. I didn't like the 3D remake on Nintendo DS and that seems to be the only version being ported nowadays.
