2420826 No.2420826 [Reply] [Original]

Is it possible to install Project 64 on a USB flash drive so I can play inbetween computers?

And if so, is there also a way to transfer an installed copy of the software over to a USB device so I do not lose my progress?

Also, what would be better? Buying a N64 controller as well as an adapter for it or just look for a USB N64 controller?

I haven't ever really played emulated games as much because it always felt weird playing with a mouse and keyboard. The N64 not so much, but for games on SNES and NES most definitely. I guess a Wii Classic controller might be better for a wide assortment of games, yes?

Good lord, what a NOOB

1. Yes
2. Yes
Literally just drag the files. It'll work.
You'll have to start the program and tell it where your folders are (paths)
3. This one's tough. N64 controllers are... well they don't age well. Personally I have a GCN controller and Mayflash GCN USB adapter.
Don't get a third party N64 controller, I don't know any good ones. Stick with first party and an adapter (mayflash is alright) or go with a different controller altogether.

4. >mouse and keyboard
>mouse
Actually, the classic controller would do pretty good with these in theory, (I've never used one for PC)
Mayflash has adapters for them.

>> No.2421464

I use Wii classic (might be the pro), and yes, they are excellent for retro gaming.

The problem is that there no company I trust to manufacturer decent third party controllers for the PC. I went through a couple before just paying for official Nintendo controllers with an adapter, which turned out to be a great choice that I should have done from the start.

Once of the reasons I look forward to the steam box is that Valve might have it in them to manufacture a controller with a D-Pad that does not suck, with buttons that do not make cheap clicking sounds. There is a big hole in the market for a high-quality native PC retro controller.

For real. How hard is it to make a good Dpad?

What's the best Dpad, in your opinion.

Mine is the GBA SP and DS

I guess it was kind of dumb to ask if the Wii classic controller is perfect for retro gaming when that was the main purpose of it's design, right?

By the way, I think they're going to just sell these controllers separately.

I just assigned my mouse movements to the D-Pad.

Is Project 64 really portable? Because I try to play on my other computer and it told me it was not recognizing my roms as N64 roms despite the fact it was playing. This lead me to re-download them from emuparadise. Now I am having an issue where all of my controls are being unassigned and when I finally got Orcarina of Time working it is not recognizing my controls I re-set. This is frustrating.

>> No.2423148

>>2423115

It has an installer so technically not completely. When installing it creates registry keys, these mostly save the settings for the main program and the plugins, including the controller plugin.
When just copying and running it the program can start and emulate but if it cannot find a reg key it will use default values and if it cannot create one will fail remembering settings. It can still save states etc cause these are written to the sub folder without a registry.

>> No.2423206

>>2423148
I assume this is also why on my other computer it didn't recognize the rom as an N64 rom?

>> No.2423439

>>2423206

In how far "recognise"?
Recognising roms is done independently from registry keys. In the currently browsed directory in that rom-choosing menu it searches for all files of a type that can contain roms via file extension (.rom, .?64 the ? being a wildcard meaning everything can be before the 64 etc.), then it looks for zip- archives (ONLY .ZIP!) and quickly scans them for roms. All it can find and detect are then presented in that menu. If a rom file cannot be opened or sth like this, even via the "open rom" option, then it's faulty.

>> No.2423489

>>2423439
By the way, I got the rom from Emuparadise.

>> No.2424984

Why don't you just make the save directory in a dropbox folder?

>> No.2425559

>>2423206
Sounds like the default rom directory was set to the one on the other computer. Just change it to the new directory on the other computer. The emulator doesn't update the roms in the list unless you force it to manually, so if the roms in the directory are suddenly missing they'll still be in the list.

>> No.2425580

>>2425559
I tried adding the roms via the file menu option too and it still told me it was an invalid N64 rom. The ROM dictionary is located in the root folder for Project64 on my USB.

Also, I uninstalled the emulator on my PC. Not sure if that was a good idea or not.

WHAT THE FUCK?!!! I WENT TO MY USB DEVICE TO MY NINTENDO 64 FOLDER WHERE I INSTALLED THE FILES TO AND NOTICED IT WAS EMPTY. I DIDN'T FUCKING DELETE THE GOD DAMN FILES AND NOW MY ORCARINA OF TIME SAVES ARE GONE MEANING I HAVE TO START ALL FUCKING OVER AGAIN FOR A THIRD FUCKING TIME. WHAT THE FUCK?!!!!!

I'M GOING TO FUCKING MURDER SOMEONE CLOSE TO ME.

All caps because I'm fucking mad.

You can use the built in gameshark cheats to skip to where you were. Just add whatever stones/medallions you got from the temples to your inventory.

Or do bosses reset along with the dungeons anyway?

Can these cheats also give me hearts? I had six of them. I also had songs and 2 stones.

Like I said, you don't need to finish a temple if you just add the medallion/stone in your inventory. Just by having the 3 stones in your inventory as a kid will trigger the zelda running away on horse scene and getting the ocarina of time/becoming an adult thing. Just by having all the medallions in your inventory will trigger the going to canon's castle thing as an adult.

Modern PJ64 is.

Modern PJ64 doesn't rely on the registry, far as I know.

>wanting to use an N64 controller

Just get a fucking 360 controller. It's a shit console, I'll give you that, but the controller is honestly one of the best I've ever used for PC gaming and emulation.

Not to mention that it has better analogue than ANY N64 controller. So games like Mario 64 actually become GOOD and fun to play with a 360 controller.

>> No.2425819

The 360 controller vaguely sucks when playing games that use the C-buttons like normal buttons - Tony Hawk, for example. Or Spider-Man.

>> No.2426156

>>2425816
The PlayStation controller far better than the 360's, mate. It's more proportional and fits your hand better. The only thing it lacks is the lowered trigger buttons, but that not a huge adjustment to make. Plus the overall tone of your post more or less gives you away as either a troll or a kid. I go to Minichan and Tinychan so I know how to spot a liar.

>I go to Minichan and Tinychan so I know how to spot a liar.

phew, and here i thought your post was legitimate

DS3 has shit triggers, inferior analogs, and a bit too small.

Growing up i loved the DS1 & 2, but once you go 360 pad, you can't go back.

The only pads i use for emulation are SNES, GC, and 360.

Okay, now it just sounds like you're doing that thing where you promote a company regardless of facts or opinions that I will not say because it's apparently a banned word now.

But the PlayStation is still the overall better controller followed by the Wii classic controller.

Also, spending a lot of time on chans, specifically those chans you tend to learn when someone is lying. You seem to have heard of those two websites. Who are you? Green, Matt Miller, t04str, Autphag, Walter, or Kimmo perhaps?

In which I must...

How've you been? Why haven't you played your taxes? Why are you such a weird difficult to pen down in regards to sexuality pervert? I hate you. How's your transgender girlfriend? Are you an admin of a wiki for Neo-Nazis?

Please answer the question that applies to you if you're one of the people I mentioned above.
