Hey /vr/. Never posted here before.

Throughout my life I've never owned a fucking N64, and it feels like blasphemy since I've played tons of games (with friends, emulated, etc.) that I've loved. Could be wrong, but I don't think Nintendo put out a single bad game for this console. So, wanting to right my past wrongs (of being too poor to ever buy one), I bought one for $30 because it was impossible to say no to that price. I've also bought a ton of accessories and have looked at some mods online. What I bought:

-HDMI upscaler
-2 mint condition HORI mini pads
-2 OEM controllers
-2 redesigned joysticks (http://www.amazon.com/Redesigned-REPLACEMENT-Joystick-Controller-Thumbstick/dp/B009MRZAUC))
-Tamper-proof screw screwdrivers for cleaning, modding, etc
-Everdrive 64 v3 (100% rom compatibility and better saving than v2)
-metallic paint, as I plan to disassemble, clean (fuck this thing is dirty), and repaint my console.

Is there anything else I should get? Am I retarded for not emulating instead? (fuck you emulation doesn't have 100% support and has a lot of errors)

You can also discuss N64 more generally if you want.

I was gonna reccommend getting the controller pak (aka memory card) so you could save in games like Goemon, Castlevania, Hybrid Heaven... but you already got an Everdrive, and it allows saving, right?
It seems you're ready and set to go.

I would also reccommend playing the N64 (or any other non-HD console) on a CRT TV, if you want a better display you could try getting some RGB cable, not sure if there are actual RGB cables for N64, or if you need to mod the console, but I'd still take even composite on a decent CRT rather than HDMI on a modern TV. Just a suggestion though, if you're fine with how it looks then it's a-OK, I just prefer CRT for SD systems myself.

Be sure to check out non-Nintendo games on it, there's actually some really great games that need to be played, especially if you have the Everdrive.
Can't miss on games like Bangai-O (IMO better than the DC version, better controls), Wonder Project J2 (it has a translation patch), Custom Robo, Ogre Battle 64.

>>2419713
Glover looks decent. I only played it for a bit but it can't be worse than Gex or Tonic Trouble so it's okay.

>> No.2419763

>>2419741
I believe the everdrive v3 saves directly to the SD card in the everdrive. If not, the memory pack is cheap, so no worries.

I don't own a CRT anymore. I know of the delay on LCD screens but it's not really something I can avoid. I even bought a HDMI upscaler. Sorry anon :(

There are mods to allow RGB cables for n64 but my console is not compatible. I can only do standard AV. Not complaining though, considering I only spent $30. You need a very specific model of n64 to do the RGB mod.

I also downloaded a pack with every game ROM ever made for N64. My everdrive I bought has the ULTRA CIC which allows me to play EU and NA games, but no JP games. Doesn't really matter since I can't read moonspeak and translations are rare as fuck. Either way, I have every Nintendo and non-Nintendo game released in Europe and North America :3. My goal is to play them all (at least for a bit). There's around 310 I think if you combine the games released in EU and NA

sorry for the tl;dr by the way

The replacement sticks are pretty shit.

>> No.2419784

>>2419779
Really? :(

The redesigned stick had good reviews... it's like a "modern" stick which has been used from PS1 to gamecube and PS2 up until now. The mechanical sticks, as you know, use two plastic actuators which break down and become loose.

There are ways to repair the mechanical actuator sticks but it didn't seem worth it to drop money on a stick which would inevitably die on me :(

I will try the replacement "modern" sticks since I already paid for them. they haven't arrived in the mail yet, but hopefully they turn out okay. I've heard good things about the specific one I purchased.

>> No.2419827

>>2419784
The OEM sticks are about as good as it gets for n64 games. They're pretty different from other analog sticks, and despite the fragility they offer a really high degree of precision that you'll miss using the gamecube style stick. It'll work ok for most games but for shooters like goldeneye/starfox you might want to stick with the oem. Same goes for the Hori pads unfortunately. They're damn good otherwise.

If your sticks are in good condition you can lube the internals with ceramic grease and that will basically make them last forever, provided you keep up with the lube every few years and don't play the first mario party.

>> No.2419836

>>2419827
one of them is in nice condition. I plan to hold onto it. the other one is loose... it's not unplayable and I could still repair the little actuators (wouldn't inhibit funcionality) but it is somewhat damaged :(

if I play a game, and the new stick/HORI minipad is not working for me, I can always put the old stick back in. it seems to be a very easy procedure :3

Cheaper option is like lithium grease. Wont last as long as the silicone grease above though.

Get some non-water-based lube for the sticks. Never hurts to give them some.

>-Everdrive 64 v3 (100% rom compatibility and better saving than v2)
Good for you. The N64 itself is largely PAL\NTSC agnostic, and can play NTSC or PAL games and will automatically adjust the Hz to match. But I've heard NTSC N64's can have problems playing some PAL titles for some obscure reason.

Also, you should play Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.

>Also, for the record, the N64 had the memory expansion already in it. Was gonna buy one but I guess I got lucky. I assumed it would have a jumper.
Important to note that the (U) version of Space Station Silicon Valley won't boot with the Expansion Pack installed due to a bug.

Hello anon :3

I bought my everdrive straight from the provider (krikzz) because he offers an ULTRA CIC unit which allows you to apparently flip a switch to support any NTSC or PAL rom. Would this solve my issues regarding NTSC/PAL compatibility? I tried to educate myself before my purchase.

And that's rather unfortunate to know that Space Station Silicon Valley won't boot. I've never heard of it, but I don't have a jumper... so unless I buy one I guess I can't play it :(

Is there maybe a romhack?

The CIC chip in an Everdrive merely controls whether the N64 will accept the everdrive cart itself. But a PAL N64 will happily boot an NTSC game rom running on a PAL CIC Everdrive, and the game will run at 60Hz -- same (should, but not always) go for NTSC N64's running PAL game roms.

>And that's rather unfortunate to know that Space Station Silicon Valley won't boot. I've never heard of it, but I don't have a jumper... so unless I buy one I guess I can't play it :(

You *might* be able to run the (E) region version, which was fixed, to my knowledge, assuming your TV can handle a 50Hz signal.

Clarification - a PAL game running on an N64 via an Everdrive should run at 50Hz, which is correct. However, I have hear there is some inherent technical problem caused by colour signals running at a slightly different frequency. There may be somebody here who knows more, but unfortunately, it's not a topic many people seem interested in because a lot of people are all, "But who would want to run a PAL game on an American N64? Who would want to use a PAL N64 to play games - buy a US N64! It can be RGB modded!" - that sorta thing.

drop the HDMI scaler, its a hunk of shit and buy a CRT and maybe some S-video cables
Grab a rumble pak and memory card best option is one of those tremor paks that either have a built in memory card or port for a card
Don't waste your time painting it, it'll look horrible and isn't worth the time because in time if you come to really enjoy the system you'll regret the hack job, in fact the only time to mod/paint a system is when it's been damaged
Also if the stick that come with your controllers are fine just lube them up and do general upkeep instead of jumping right into swapping out the sticks
