Yesterday there was a Super Nintendo that looked pretty clean with 2 controllers, and 9 games (notably super metroid, smw, smw2, dkc, dkc2) asking $50. Not retro but a bunch of people have ps4s for ~140 dollars on mine (or best offer)

Have to wonder if it's safe buying stuff on there and if those offers are even legit.

Also, someone's trying to sell the PT Demo on a ps4 for like 7.8k lol (I guess a bunch of people are, though)

But actually related, nothing really screams out at me on the first few pages; most things seem to be priced evenly with amazon or slightly higher...

There's a final fantasy NES in box with manuals in really nice condition for 150, but not really sure it's worth it at that price.

Also a pretty nice looking dreamcast for 40, but again that's probably slightly higher than auction sites/amazon.

Seems like actually great deals are kind of rare on cl to me.

Yeah to be honest, if it's complete in box, 100 bucks is pretty reasonable.

It's a sorry state in Toronto I'm afraid.

Kijiji fuckers (that post ads on craigslist linking to their Kijiji ads) regularly try to charge $70+ for just a console and a single controller.

Slight update: At first I thought this price was incredibly stupid, but then I checked Ebay and apparently a number of these things are selling for around that price.

When did it get jacked so high up?

It's funny. The best places to buy vintage games and electronics is the country, where no one seems to give a shit about them. Problem is stores with old video games are like needles in haystacks.

It depends.

Like >>2414537 said, a lot of the cartridge stuff of any value or even interest has probably been long gone. Even when they're not, the prices can be pretty "scalp-y".

That said, there are some thrift stores that actually don't rip you off, and will charge you reasonable/acceptable prices for older vidya. Again it's the country effect. Thrift stores and game stores in the city tend to rip you off when it comes to this stuff. However those same stores in the country will happily part with older games. I once got a gameboy micro (with a carrying case and charger) + Pokemon Fire Red for 25$. It all worked perfectly too.

So,if the thrift stores you're thinking of aren't too far away, go for it. It's always fun finding nice deals and friendly staff. Most of the time you'll probably come back empty handed, but those few times you don't make it all worthwhile. Plus as you go around, make sure you mentally (or even physically) record the stores prices. The landmark prices are stuff such as the older Pokemon Games, Super Mario/Donkey Kong/Mario Kart 64, and your "classic" NES and SNES games. It's fun seeing how much those prices can vary from place to place. I once saw a store try to charge $60 for Super Contra, cartridge only.

Fuck that noise.

Thankfully though I recently discovered an indie store that doesn't rip me off. Their selection of older games isn't great, but it's well priced, and I don't feel like I'm being fleeced.

On the subject of craigslist, I haven't had any issues. Sometimes people will try to talk you down 5 dollars once you meet up with them, but just make sure you tell them via text or email that you won't put up with that, and you'll simply refuse to sell/buy from them.

But that's pretty rare, and I haven't had any poor experiences yet. Make sure you meet in coffee shops or crowded public places though. For obvious reasons.

Does saying names of stores count as adverts? Hopefully not, but I'll change the names a bit so if you know of the store, you'll know which one I mean.

I actually found a decent store that doesn't gouge you as much. It's in a mall off Charles St W by the Bloor subway station. Selection isn't amazing, but the prices are relatively fair. Holy shit, I am so glad I stopped collecting around a decade ago, now I just buy the occasional Japanese game. In the late 90s nobody wanted this shit, old electronics were considered junk. I used to buy NES carts for $3 or maybe $5 all over the place. I actually bought a bag of SNES games, maybe a dozen, for $10 at a Value Village one time. My Virtual Boy was like $5.99. I used to see Atari stuff for practically nothing, people we're giving them away. These prices are fucking crazy; if you had told me five or six years ago that N64s were selling for over $100 I would've laughed. I'm lucky enough to have a decent collection but I've never paid more than $10 for a game. I feel bad for you guys now.

Most retro stores will try to charge at least 20 dollars for pokemon stadium. They'd also probably charge at least 30 if not 50 for a working N64.

No one really knows why. Five or six years ago, only a few games like Earthbound of Final Fantasy 3/6 were expensive.

If I had to guess, I'd shift the blame onto viral video game reviewers. A lot of people review vintage video games now and that probably inflated the value of them. However this is all just speculation.

Finding deals in pawn shops is more or less out the window, but garage sales and flea markets usually have better outcomes.

Again, if you want to start a collection again, and you lack an N64, go for it. It a good enough deal to get back into it, but it's resale value is pretty meh.

I'm not suggesting you resell shit anyways, but you can use resell prices to determine whether or not you're getting ripped off.

Well here is the thing.
I found a Genesis for 15 bucks, and a PS1, complete for 20 with GT2 inside. The same location had a copy of SMB3 for NES at 30 bucks when it actually goes for no higher than 15 bucks. 18 being the max. So there is a bit of fuckery going on because whoever prices this shit isn't the same person I assume. Overall, they're worth checking out. They always have cool electronics and shit.

I visit the location near me every Friday because they always renew their inventory. Gotta beat the reseller scumbags.

Is there a good place to check for the going prices of games? I'm kind of making my own table with ended Ebay auctions but it'd be great if a site like that already existed so I don't have to make a massive spreadsheet.

Anyway, I went to Kensington Market today. Admittedly, I probably saw only about a third of what is has to offer, so I don't know if I overlooked a place with used electronics there unfortunately.

I went straight to a store there called Iceman video games, and they had a pretty massive selection of retro stuff. I'm kind of on the fence about them though. The easiest way to describe it is like a physical version Ebay. Pretty much all of their prices are what you'd pay if you won the average Ebay auction.

Pokemon Crystal was 50 dollars, yellow was 45. Which seems to be the going asking price these days on Ebay.

It did feel like they overcharged for consoles though. N64's were like 100 dollars I think, brick gameboys were 50. Kind of overpriced in that department if you ask me.

But they did have a few variants like the Spongebob SP and the Pokemon Gameboy Pocket and I think those too, were the going Ebay rates.

All in all, it's probably worth checking out once, but I doubt I'll ever go back because it is a bit of a TTC hike for me (as well as a literal one), and their prices aren't worth going back for. If you don't mind paying a buy it now price, it's a good store, but otherwise, it's nothing special. The staff was nice though, I have to credit them there. Very friendly and approachable.

Speaking of TTC hikes, it's kind of a shame that all of the value villages are half hour walks from the nearest subway stations. Gotta learn the streetcar routes.

Interestingly enough though, the store I mentioned earlier had another location on Queen St west, which was the exact same deal. But I found a neat store which probably doesn't have anything, but I'm gonna do a more thorough check tomorrow. Just a load of random stuff.

Yeah, Iceman has a great selection but they tend to have the highest prices of the game stores I go to. Plus, I know for a fact the sit on games to raise prices (looking at you, Team Buddies and Azure Dreams). Occasionally you'll find a deal or if you have a Vicinity card, get a decent one e-mailed to you every once in awhile but it's few and far between.

Since you're using the TTC, have you tried Gamesmania off of Keele station? They don't have the best retro selection, but the prices are pretty good, generally $10-$30 for common used stuff. Though there are exceptions, they are charging $230 for a copy of The Misadventures of Tron Bonne.

Only other places I go to regularly are Game Center off of Bloor/Younge station and VG+ on Wilson and Keele, and neither of those really specialize in retro. Besides what's already been mentioned like A&C I think that covers all the ones in Toronto.

Yeah as it stands Game Centre (in the bloor mall) is definitely my favourite one. Their selection isn't too great, but god damn those prices compared to all the other stores in Toronto are a refreshing change. Not to mention they've got decent prices for used current gen stuff too.

Protip: Their location on Danforth is ded. Not sure how long but I went to check it out today and the building is totally empty and up for lease. Added about 40 minutes to my trip but oh well.

The only places I've been are Iceman, A&C, Gamerama, and Game Centre. So, I'll give Gamesmania a try, as well as VG+. It's good if they don't specialize or hold any attachment to retro stuff because then they won't jack up the prices to resell values.

I was just checking the review for Gamesmania and some guy suggested a place called Hi-Tech which is right around the corner from Dufferin station. I'll probably check out both places tomorrow, as well as the place I found on Queen.

I don't even know how to describe it. It's more or less filled to the roof with random pickings, and I think I spied a few electronic devices in there but nothing vidya yet. Hopefully the guy will let me give it a more thorough check because there's no sense of organization here. No cashiers, just a guy telling you how much things are. The store doesn't even have a name.

Also, flea markets. Probably going to go to a few on the weekend. Which ones are a waste of time in your past experience, or do they all give you reasonably prices for vintage games?

Wow that's incredibly helpful.

Do people really offer only a dollar to vendors? Jesus Christ.

I remember one time I was some charity garage sale to help out with our local fire hall. I found a genesis and a few games, as well as a copy of Doom 2 in the box. When I asked how much it was the guy told me "How much do you think it's worth?". I didn't actually know how much any of it was worth, but 30 dollars seemed fair, so when I relayed that the guy replied with "Well how about 5 dollars?".

Any other time I probably would've have done that, but I thought fuck that, this is for charity, so I gave him 30 dollars and went on my way.

Not much into the flea market scene. Dr. Flea has two or three video game places with decent-ish prices. I think one of them, Extreme Games Interactive, has a location somewhere in Toronto, though I've never been.

I've never been to Gamerama, but I believe my cousin did and she had a horrible experienc so I don't feel I've missed out. Anyone in this thread know more about it?

I think I went to Hi-Tech once and wasn't too impressed, but this was a few years back, maybe they've changed?

Also, if you have to do business with A&C or Iceman, get a Vicinity card from them. It's a free points card that sometimes sends you deals for both places (10% off next purchase, $5 of a $50 or more item, etc).

I'm actually heading to the Anime North convention over the weekend and they have a few game venders. Iceman and Gamesmania will be there, as well 1UP Games and Blue Gryphon which I think are up north somewhere. New York Games are there too, but I dunno if I'll get anything; the have a great selection, especially imports, but ye Gods the prices.

I actually know a fair bit about Gamerama.

Really, the only bad thing about them is they tend to really, really overcharge vintage stuff. They charge 70 dollars for a loose cart of Mario Kart 64. That should give you a good enough indication of what the rest of their retro prices are. It's a shame too because I remember shopping their in 2010 when their retro collection was nigh nonexistent, but it was all way cheaper. I got an original gameboy there a long time ago (with super mario land 6) for a combined of 20 dollars flat. It was awesome. They also had a gameboy pocket for 20 dollars, but I regrettably never picked it up.

But aside from that, it's a decent store. I'm a big fan of their return policy on used games, where if you return a used game you bought from them within two weeks, you get the whole thing back as store credit, meaning you could effectively keep hopping from game to game until you either found one you wanted to keep or whatever. I'm pretty sure you can do this indefinitely too, but don't quote me on that.

Their trade in prices are pretty bad, but everywhere is so I'm apathetic on that front.

Customer relations is pretty good. Most of their employees are really friendly and approachable (and so is the owner), but there was one guy who just seemed really grouchy and impatient. Not sure if he still works there.

The funny thing, half of their clients are people fixing their cell phones, it's kind of become a go to place for it. Never had them repair anything of mine, so I can't comment on the service on a personal level.

All in all, good game store, shitty vintage store, good repair store.

I've never been to doctor flea, but that wasn't the market I had in mind. There's a few more whose names escape me, but I wouldn't mind checking them out.

I'm trying to figure out if I have a higher chance of finding something good at flea markets or garage sales. Logic would probably dictate garage sales, but I feel like your chances are lower.

But you're right about their prices being weird. Most places ask for 10-15 dollars for a cart only copy of Dragon's Quest/Warrior 1, but these guys were asking for 25 dollars.

look at Truxton for the Genesis and fucking Mark from CGR ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT IT. Price shot up, boxed copy some 10 years ago was nothing, then about 2012 or so, it start going up. Loose is $40 and CIB is $70.

Any time anyone with a fanbase starts to talk about a game, they copies start to dwindle and the prices shoot up because SUPPLE N DEMUND. Fucking Truxton was a $9 CIB, I just checked my price book from 2006.

the trick with flea markets is to get there as soon as they open. its the only way i've gotten some of the shit I have now and you at least beat the resellers, but you also have competition from other collectors.

I have a group of guys I walk around with at my market. we grab up nearly everything fun or expensive and then divide it up at the end of the day. usually it goes into who needs for their collection and who wants for their collection.

like I found a box with TONS of N64 games in it, at least 30-40 games and 2 systems. had pretty much all the popular or expensive titles in it, CBF Mario's, Banjo's lots of CIB games etc etc. I took CBF, Paper Mario and Kirby 64 because I knew someone else who was looking for them and left everything else for them to take.

Sometimes we trade with each other, but we try to stay one step ahead of the resellers and hoarders. hate hoarders more than anything, one guy was trying to be nice I guess and he has a nice collection, but its like "do you even PLAY any of those games?"

God I hate people that post the same ad every 12 hours for days (if not weeks) on end. They don't seem to realize the reason no one is buying their shit is because the price is too high. They just keep it the same.

There was this guy on CL who kept reposting his Bionicles ad for 2 years. I'm dead serious, he's been trying to sell these things (not even the good ones either) for 2 years and he's never changed the fucking price.

More on topic, I wonder if people actually respond to those ads?

>> No.2423852

I wonder, is there some way to automate the reposting? Unless the guy has a mental deficiency you'd think after the 5th repost he'd either decide to lower the price or realize they aren't going to sell. Shit like that just irritates me because all it does is give a bad idea to new sellers of the same/similar items and encourages them to ask an obscene amount as well.

I think some people would rather go broke than think they undersold their junk or that a buyer got a better deal than they did.

Depends if the ad posting requires the user to solve a captcha. If not, I don't think it'd be to hard to set up a "bot" that posts the ad every [x] number of hours.

I'm sure it can be done even if there's a captcha, but I haven't heard any methods of how to get around it.

Honestly I don't mind getting up early for the good stuff, but I agree about the fucking resellers.

I honestly wouldn't care if the people buying this stuff kept it for a collection or to play themselves. But it's annoying as fuck when everyone is trying to sell their NES with no games and a single controller for 70 dollars. It is pretty hipster, but I think it's shifting towards the Gamecube next. It'll be considered retro in after this generation is over, so I'd stock up on that shit now.

Anyhow, I'm gonna try again this weekend. Resellers can't be everywhere. What I really need is a friend to go to the opposite end of the garage sale/flea market and work their way down towards me.

Also, with regards to haggling, what exactly do you say? Don't people just flat out refuse prices lower than they're asking?

>> No.2425272

It's not "hipster" at all, it's simply people hearing about the retro gaming fad and trying to cash in. A lot of these sellers aren't bad, they just don't have a clue about the actual market value, they've heard of some SNES game selling for $300 so they think all games go for that. 130 for an NES starter kit?

"Up for grabs is a nice NES Nintendo Entertainment System Bundle.
Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, and Super Mario 3 are all included.

Everything you see in the pictures is included.

I just replaced the 72 pin connector on the NES console. The red power light still blinks sometimes and the system still requires a little "love tap" on the sides from time to time. Other than that, the system works great considering its age.

All the games and controllers have been tested and verified to work. The Zapper has NOT been tested. I cannot say for sure that it works. I do not believe that it will work on a flat screen. I think it needs a curved or tube tv to work. Don't quote me on that though. "

I can tell you for France, yep the retro fever is hitting hard too, we have our retro games shops, ours resellers, even selling at yardsales, so as soon as you see one you can assume there's no more games to grab.
Games "in english" (non pal if I understood correctly) can be expensive, mostly if they are US exclusives, but since they aren't pal and often need an adaptator or a mod, they aren't as expensive as pal games for the simple reason that there ain't enough demand for US games.
Also as soon as it's a pal game it comes with french/netherlands/german/english version, I don't know a lot of French-only games, do you ?
I can also tell you that jap games worth nothing here.

Yeah, that makes sense. The only Saint Seiya game we've gotten in the US is one of the PS3 ones.

Wonder if europe got any mazinger games or anything exclusive. I know italy or somewhere loves that shit.

>major reseller bastards
Yeah, they're everywhere, the worst thing is that I go to a lot of yardsales (lower normandy fag) and every time there another reseller, I rarely see the same person twice, as if they're reproducting or something.
And when you come early you can see them buying absolutely anything videogames related, as this guy who bought randomly game cube memory cards / snes games / game boys.
I mean damn, I found one day a bag full of N64 games and consoles, this old lady was asking for 50€ (2 N64 and like 20 games) and I just picked up what I was looking for.
>And you can still get lucky
Yeah, of course, if you go at 6 am, I have made some good deals too, but you gotta be fast, spot that one guy asking for videogames at every seller and overtake him, but hey it's part of the game I guess and I still like it, but it sometimes makes me rage so hard...

The situation looks pretty bad on your side. Here (Nord Pas-de-Calais) on every decent sized flea market/yard sale you will encounter one typical muslim thug (along with a few mates, 'aight) selling a lot of random (and I mean really random, like fucking girls and horses games) games for modern systems... I wonder if that's common to other parts of the country and if that counts as a reseller, or a receleur :^) ...

Anyway, keep fighting the good fight man, if you stop those fuckers will get even more games.

Not as bad, you just have to wake up earlier on sundays, but having seen the rise of the price on yardsales on the last years, I can't help being mad when I see those resellers who didn't even exist like 5 years ago when no one gave a shit about videogames.
I'm just wondering how much games they manage to sell every sunday, because they're here like very week as if it was really paying off.

>Muslim thug
>like fucking girls and horses games
kek'd, here it's more like fedora-wearing retro-store keeper wannabes ("Hey this one is listed at 100€ on ebay, you're doing a very good deal at 95€ and won't find it anywhere else, trust me"), and / or random 50-60 years old guys with random prices (like anything videogames related worth gold) and sometimes stickers on games like "omg super rare" / "impossibletofind" on TMNT1 nes games as if they're trying to justify their 50€ stickers.

Anyway, good to know there are frenchfags on here, I'll try to post on bst sometime.

But to stick to the thread, frenchfags should know that on the toutcash website you can find some pretty acceptable deals (I recently bought dynamite headdy MD and nightmare creatures 2 for less than 8€ each).

Thanks for the website; those shops sometimes have very nice surprises (a friend of mine found King's Field IV for 1€).

And yeah, you're right about those people thinking anything video games related worth gold. I've lost count of how many times I had to ask twice for the price of zelda nes/64 games because I thought I heard it wrong, just to be answered: "hey it's a gold version, it's rare!"...

>"hey it's a gold version, it's rare!"
Makes me think of those kids on school playgrounds getting ripped off because some other kids trade holographic pokemon cards with entire decks cause it shines and so it must be rare.

$2 a game, plus a 7800 system. Not bad to launch a collection.
Some will argue certain titles are dirt common and should only cost you pennies, but factor in convenience, and all is good. You're getting it all in one sweep and not dozens of individual purchases.
