2411781 No.2411781 [Reply] [Original]

So, today is allegedly the 20th anniversary of the frankly rather disasterous US launch of the Sega Saturn.
Let's have a Saturn General Thread.
What model/revision do you have?
What's your favorite non-import game?
What's your favorite import?
Basically chat about anything Saturn related

>> No.2411829

I have a Black US model 2 and a White Japanese Saturn

Favorite non-import is probably virtual on or VF2

Favorite import Tenchi Wo Kurau 2

>> No.2411838

Sega Saturn

>> No.2411841

>>2411781
There's been a lot of Saturn threads recently and I'm quite okay with this new development.

>What model/revision do you have?
I had the Model 2 (US) growing up and it came with the 3 pack (Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, Daytona USA). I now have Yabause and a Saturn USB controller.

>What's your favorite non-import game?
Probably Sonic R honestly. Love the shit out of that game even though it's short as fuck.

>What's your favorite import?
Radiant Silvergun these days. I really enjoyed Lupin III for a while when I first modded mine.

Psychic Killer Toramaru or whatever is fucking god tier. I played that game a bunch with my bro who died a couple years back.

>> No.2411848

US model 2, have it since back in the day
favorite non-import is Panzer Dragoon II Zwei
favorite import is Vampire Savior

>> No.2411856

Omedetou sega chan
I wonder why they bought atlus, they seem like they want out of the game market

>> No.2411857

I've got a Model 1 I picked up back in February. It's pretty sweet.

Favorite Game: Darius Gaiden
Favorite Import: Haven't imported anything yet. Dunno what to get besides like Radiant Silvergun.

>> No.2411904

I have two model ones and a Saturn display cab. Sooo many good games but NiGHTS has to be my favorite. Haven't played a ton of imports but I'll probably go with Radiant Silvergun.

It's kinda sad how much of a failure it was while being so God damn based.

>buy a Model 1 Saturn with Clockwork Knight, Daytona and VF2 along with a Model 1 controller for $50
>still no Action Replay
>haven't bought any games since
>even if I buy an AR, I need a $50 modchip for burned games
>PseudoSaturn essentially bypasses this at the cost of the memory card portion of the AR
What do I do?

>> No.2411936

>>2411921

Buy an official power memory cartidge and use the AR4 for the pseudo stuff and the extra RAM.
I've had bad experiences with the saves on the AR4 and got all my saves deleted, so it's not reliable as a save cart IMO.

US Model 2. I got it form my uncle about three Christmas back, he had it in storage.

>Fave non-import
Panzer Dragoon Saga

>Fave import
Both my Cotton games (2 and Boomerang)

I actually have a question for you guys: how long do modern batteries last when put in a Saturn? I put a fresh battery when I got it and haven't had to change it yet, but a guide I read said the die after about a year and a half to two years.

Anyone else have a soft spot for the US cases? I've seen people complain about them being fragile but I've never had any issues with the cases breaking and really dig the extra space for the artwork they had over standard CD cases at the time.

either Virtual On (it's so damn good, there are days where I like it more than Oratan) or Galactic Attack (which I think is the finest shmup of them all -- presentation, graphics, sound, even scoring is actually pretty deep (especially by '93/'94 standards), but I haven't really played for score)
>fav import
Keio Yuugekitai for things I own, Bulk Slash for things I don't

All this talk about saves in the thread, never had an issue with saves here, although none of the games I play other than Burning Rangers and Sonic R needed to save so it wouldn't actually matter if I dad.

>>2411841
>Sonic R
Surprisingly good game. Short as fuck, easy as fuck, handling's weird, but the soundtrack is wonderful, the graphics are nice, the course design is interesting, and it was overall pretty cool.

I like the soundtrack but it's polarizing, and the PC version ended up cutting the music anyway for some reason.

It was one of those "fine enough to play, but not as a full-price game" things.

>> No.2414880

>>2414876
Why don't you like them? Really the only issue I can find is that they take up more space than standard jewel cases but I think the payoff for larger cover art is worth it a lot of the time. Great example of what I mean is Street Fighter Alpha 2, the PS1 cover art looks way more cramped than the Saturn one.

they're fragile as shit and huge for no reason. i've also had a cd snap trying to take it out of the case.

I loved the shit out of Last Bronx back when I was a kid, though I had only played it in arcades. Tonfa chick was my main.
It was my first 3D fighter. I'd love to go play it again, but part of me prefers to keep my nostalgia rather than risk realizing just how exactly good it might not be.

honestly, I was fine with this after playing Ridge Racer and its 3 tracks, playable forward and backward to make 6 courses

and they had all kind of multiple paths and stuff
but I guess it really should have had more

>>2414221
nope
they're literally the worst (the disc can fucking fall out while inside the case during transport, they're fragile as fuck, they just weren't designed well at all), other than the larger cover art
and it doesn't help that most US Saturn cover art isn't that great anyway

>>2414909
Sega's older 3D fighters hold up fairly well. Sega knew their shit.
