Them originals are getting hard to find, so lets have a thread summarising and reviewing all the third party controllers that are actually worth the money.

I'll start:
These motherfuckers right here, The Competition Pro III, are the best damn Genesis/MD controllers I know. I much prefer them to the official controllers since the buttons have much more feedback and the controller is physically larger. The downside is that the D-pad can be a bit loose.

I think there is a SNES version which is almost identical, I can only imagine they're just as good.

Had many 3rd party controllers as a kid for Genesis, SNES, N64, but this was my favorite.

ugliest controller I've ever seen but I'm interested in what that programm-pad thing does. could you elaborate on that?

You could program different commands, for example doing a shoryuken by simply pressing one of the 3 keys surrounding the face buttons. I think it even had pre-programmed commands for games like Mortal Kombar or Street Fighter.

I never actually used it to play fightans, mostly remember using it playing DKC2. It was comfortable.

We all love tierlists right? Lets make one, maybe with manufacturers first. Add to it as you see fit.

>High Tier
Hori
Honeybee

>Mid Tier
Logitech
China clones

>2nd player tier
Mad Catz

disclaimer: before you make any observations. yes, it looks clunky and uncomfortable but it's actually not at all.

haters gonna hate. it's a pretty good and sturdy replacement controller and it served me well.

no it's not hard in the slightest. it takes a while getting used to it coming from the original N64 controller but the significant difference in that regard is that this build is a little bit more elevated in vertical size than the orginal controller which is more flat in design.

so you actually have more of a claw grip as result but it feels fine. otherwise this wouldn't work and yes, I'm aware it looks completely misleading on first sight.

another thing: the wider control stick radius helps you steering better and sharper in games like Wave Race 64, F-Zero X and Pilot Wings. it's useful to have.

How does it work for games where aiming precision is important such as Starfox or Sin and Punishment?

>> No.2413397

>>2413385
I don't what makes you think it would be that much different in that regard but really, just the same way as with the normal N64 controller.

the gamester one is no hindrance when you're aiming at something and I finished all 3 Lylat Wars paths with it.

its grip is especially better if you just have bigger hand and you start noticing that the space between your finger and the z-trigger is too narrow with the regular controller. then this one helps having a more comfortable position reaching the z-trigger and to answer your question, the z-trigger is usually for aiming and shooting so that felt a bit better coming from the original controller which didn't fit my hands perfectly anymore.

btw aiming precision barely matters on consoles and I'd say that this is more of a question concerning the game programming itself rather than what controller you use.

most console games use auto- lock on anyway.

I already said I finished Starfox/Lylat Wars with it and I also mentioned how I'd use it for F-Zero X etc.

so I'd rather let that anon do some logical deduction himself to figure out the answer to something so glaringly obvious.

I haven't tried 3rd party N64 controllers yet, but I've played Sin and Punishment using the Gamecube controller, on the Wii, and I had a hard time aiming, it wasn't as precise as it is on the actual N64, which I got to play on later.

>most console games use auto- lock on anyway.

On S&P you can switch from lock on to manual anytime, this is key and useful because the lock-on shooting makes less damage, but comes in handy in certain parts, it works more like a dual shooting type mechanic than actual handicap. Typical Treasure switching mechanics.

This is still my favorite third-party controller ever.

>> No.2413502

>>2413486
I can't comment on Sin and Punishment since I only emulated that once and I didn't use the gamester controller but instead a regular DualShock 3. I tried manual aiming with the DS3 and it was still ungodly hard. but that is due to the fact that this particular rail shooter has a weird perspective when it comes to 3rd person aiming. you almost always shoot diagonally up left and what not.

regardless, the gamester controller doesn't differ that much from the original N64 controller to make such a crucial difference when it comes to aiming. it's a bit better than the original though as you'd have an easier time going from one enemy to another one far away, I'd assume since the control radius is just wider.

Lets get a list of suggested third-party controllers for retro consoles. I guess it can go in a pastebin eventually:

>Genesis/MD
Honeybee Competition Pro III

>SNES
AsciiWare AsciiPad

>N64
Honeybee Competition Pro N64
Hori Mini Pad
Gamester

>PS1

>Saturn

I'd put dreamcast down as well but the official controllers for those are so readily available and so cheap there isn't much point in getting a third party one.
