2408715 No.2408715 [Reply] [Original]

Hi,

I'm using DiskJuggler to burn my cdi's to a standard cdr disc. However my dreamcast doesn't seem to read any of the discs I burn. I've tried several games and even the utopia boot disc. It spins the disc for about 4 seconds before stopping completely, nothing boots. Normal games and CD's play with no problems.

Any help on how to get them to run? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

>> No.2408720

Not all dreamcasts play backups.
Make sure yours does before burning more.

Mine has the '1 Pal E' on the back, which I think supports it. Or am I wrong? Can't find much information on which ones do and don't

I have, again to no success :(
I was thinking it could be something wrong with the laser? but surely it wouldn't play normal games either.

Try also with using the boot disc first. I still use the boot disc before playing my images of HotD2 and DOA2.

Which one are you using?

http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/dreamcast/homebrew-apps/all-dreamcast-boot/

I use 1.3 (or 1.2). Used Discj and put and burned it on a disc. I don't think 1.5 was working for me back then.

>> No.2408764

Okay, stop everything you are doing.

>Get alcohol120% so you can burn shit in Dreamcast mode
>Make sure you are opening the cdi and not just burning it to a disc

Also, shocked nobody has asked: How EXACTLY are you burning these discs?

Okay, sorry if I came off as an ass. The most common thing people tend to do is burn the cdi to the disc as a file.

It no problem :)
Are those methods good? As its a pain trying to find the root of the problem lol. I don't know if im burning them incorrectly of if my Dreamcast is shit or if the cdi's I'm downloading are naff

Try an ISO instead.

What brand are your discs? SUPPOSEDLY Dreamcasts are picky with what brand you get as far as discs.

You'll come to a page where you pick disc at once/track at once, data type, et cetera. Click data type and there should be a Dreamcast mode.

pretty sure I used imgburn and crappy CDs from the pound shop on my pal (1)

burn slow i guess, and what are you trying to burn? is the game not over 700mb?

I know there is a certain file structure to dreamcast games on the disk, that may be a problem.

Could it be that your laser is somehow damaged so that it can't read backups anymore? I've heard that some Playstation 2 lasers may get damaged so that they're not able to read DVD's anymore but normal CDs and PS1 games work fine.

Do original games work fine? Does it play backup music CDs?

Absolute best of luck to you if you choose to try adjusting the laser. I never had much luck and have ended up frying them.

Can you tell me how you did it? I've heard several people say the same thing but after years of adjusting the odd laser when it starts acting up I've never managed to fuck it up. I've even tried turning the pot large amounts in each direction and the laser worked just fine when I got it in the right position.

>> No.2412627

>>2412550
No idea. I've spent hours trying to get it to work. I don't know what you mean by "large amount" but it was only about a 1/4 turn to fry it.

Anon who linked it here. I did it just fine several years ago. I just kept tinkering with it in very tiny amounts, powering it back on, seeing if it booted, and repeating.

It's quite possible that I just don't have the patience for it. If I was smarter I would have just waited until I had a multimeter. Right now I'm trying to find info on using an oscilloscope to adjust it back to perfect.

Make sure your Dreamcast can do it. After the initial release they did some copyright protection.

Burn at 1x

bad advice, Imgburn sucks for anything that isn't a completely vanilla data disc. Any protection, multisession, subcodes, or multi-track formats, and it is a toss-up if it works or not.

>>2416983
>And still no program to auto convert GD-ROM to .cdi and burn on a CD-ROM.

How stupid can you get? GD-ROM dumps physically have more data on the disc, you have to downsize all of them manually on a case-by-case basis.

>> No.2417034

It really may just be the laser. When I finally got high-speed internet back in the ancient past I downloaded quite a bit of Dreamcast games only to find I could no longer read any new media I burned. That specific Dreamcast was just kinda fucked. My others read the media just fine. Try out the laser adjustment. Most of these weird tutorials for burning are unneeded. I think I ended up using CDI2NRG for my shit and it all works just fine. Just burn as slow as you can. Most drives/applications will no longer burn at 1x.

So people must able to create a program to downsize the disc right? 64-bit don´t have programs running 100% by 32 or 16 bits.

>> No.2418421

>>2418327
No, they don't downsize the disc per-say, they downgrade the video/audio quality or in extreme cases cut out extra content like demos
