Speedrunners tend to get their wads off DSDA in general, though. Some mapsets have "fix" wads included with them because of the original version having a map thats unfinishable (cc2 24), or has a large enough reject overflow that demo desyncs are inherent (requiem 21), among other things.

not so much a jail as a standard mid nineties fortress map (most prison maps have you breaking out, not in) but i doubt many players would reach that far as the first thing you must do is press on a completely unmarked section of wall to make a second completely unmarked section of wall lower to get a key to enter the place.

inside there was a central courtyard which gets swarmed quickly, a barrel puzzle, a poison floor and obstacles puzzle, a pillar jumping puzzle, and a cyberdemon with two invulnerabilities. strange progression, too, i can't fathom how the author intended you to play. in order to find the key mentioned above i had to resort to a map editor, which revealed a secret passage right inside the fortress entrance which gave you the red key and allowed half the level to be avoided.

it was all a bit annoying, i can't really recommend it.

this is true, the dsda mirrors all wads for which it hosts demos. this is quite useful, for example, alice88 never uploaded kusok.wad to /idgames but since j4rio did a demo of it, it gets hosted there instead of on some fly-by-night japanese file host that, as i recall, half the board couldn't even access (it needed someone to mirror it)

however the dsda has an annoying interface, requires a browser, makes you search, all urls based on meaningless numbers, no easy way to just look up a filename and download with wget.

tangentially, i have a recurring nightmare that /idgames will get replaced by some "rich, modern" web interface that requires a browser and is unmirrorable.

a large part of the reason we're all still here is because /idgames was a central store of every wad ever made, trivially accessible with any braindead ftp/http client, and mirrored on several continents, so nothing ever got lost.

and if you think i'm worrying over nothing, this is not an idle worry, it has actually happened before -- remember drdteam hosting, which hid everything behind a shitty web interface and when it went offline the whole thing was lost forever?

for me i agree the original game is a bit empty of enemies on lower skills, but on the other hand it has been pointed out episode 1 in particular is balanced better on HMP, because UV adds vast numbers of sergeants, so you are constantly drowning in dropped ammunition. for example, it is difficult not to finish E1M1 with a full load of 50 shells.

I've hit a bit of an issue for GMOTA's online play: I want subweapon chests and spellcubes to respawn after being destroyed in multiplayer sessions, but no matter what i try, they simply will not respawn.

Currently weapon spawns are replaced with a random spawner that drops things like health and ammo pickups, those respawn just fine. However when the RNG picks a chest or a cube, they refuse to respawn, and I've added -DROPPED to the chests and cubes, so now at this point I'm completely stuck.

Blaz has everything he could need to function without picking up subweapons. And chests aren't exactly rare anyways.

If chests respawn in singleplayer this would be rather dumb because people could just sit about waiting for their free POWs.

This could happen in multiplayer too but everyone is such a rusher that I doubt it would be relevant.

Dropping subweapons would require a complete overhaul of the subweapon pickup system right now, two subweapons at a time could be a mess too, and I agree that chest drops from monsters is pretty common, so that leaves me either with a token option, or just say fuck it to the whole thing and just leave it as is, though subweapons are a neigh impossible to get during co-op.

backpacks are already replaced with item crash expanders to boost their max item crash count, and honestly that shit is broken online too, the counter gets all fucked up and gives players the wrong information regarding how many item crashes they currently have. Term claims this is not an issue but I fucking beg to differ.

To be perfectly honest I'm unhappy with the current state of GMOTA's multiplayer, but I alone can't do much about it as this is all shit over my head.

Most probably yes.
Multiplayer has separate options to respawn weapons and actors. A weapon just lying around is that - "weapon"
Chest that drops weapons is an actor, and "respawn weapons" would noot affect it.

Isn't there a check or anything whether the current game a multiplayer or not?
In the least you could check if there are more than one Player actor on the map, and if there are, set Chest actor to regenerate to normal state every once in a while.

Okay so two things here:

1) I tweaked the nailgun to fire increasingly faster the longer you shoot it

and 2) I'm not happy with the BFG right now. I'll need to talk with Shivers and see what we can do about it

I'm also not happy with my pistol either, after all of these crazy exotic weapons the pistol feels super underwhelming seeing as its altfire function is just a reload, I might have to do something about this

You should make the slower firing mode have to reload eventually when firing nonstop.
Even if it takes 2-3x as many bullets compared to the burst mode.

It just looks out of place to have a reload like that but you're able to fire forever if you shoot slower.

If I recall, those aren't so much screenshots as they're concept images for potential Doom 4 which Carmack made sure got canned while he still worked there, because he thought it was complete rubbish.

As for a "doomfootage" file in Rage, I don't know a lot about that, but there's an easteregg with the rocketlauncher, if you idle for long enough, the player will flip down a display and you'll see a couple of seconds of gameplay from Doom 1, before he flips it back up.

Like the other Anon said, add some broken tiles. This is a crypt, it should be old and in disrepair.
The lighting is pretty good--you can't really adjust it to look the same with and without dynamic lighting, but it still looks good either way.
I like the detail on the ceiling, most people don't think about the ceiling.

Remember to make sure there isn't anything that could trip a player up while they're running through the room. If the geometry of the wall is catching people in the middle of their strafing, try making some impassible lines to make the wall act like one smooth surface.

an actual jail, where you start off in a cell, with the usual "why have i still got a pistol, oh well, shoot that button on the wall to free myself" opening. there are two other identical cell structures, then you go under an exit sign and the map stops resembling a prison outright.

i was dismayed to find myself at one point in an automapless maze but it wasn't very large and didn't ruin the map. later on there seems some clear inspiration taken from the far end of E2M6, the yellow key area.

one unkillable monster, a cyberdemon stuck in a pit, a few other monsters stuck in walls unable to move, and quite a lot of missing textures and unpegged doortracks, nonetheless this map is quite playable and i enjoyed it enough to play it again almost immediately (after watching the demo).

Playing Blood 2: The Chosen
Shit's funky and jittery at high res (1400x1050) and requires some external patching to play propperly (not included with GOG edition for some reasons - so GOG version will crash if vertical res is higher than 960)

Apparently there's code that allows for some minor in-fighting shenanigans LOL. But monsters fight only for 5-10 seconds before they return to the player.

What are some good Blood 2 mods beside Extra Crispy (4th version is better than 5th in many aspects. Why they decided to make painfully contrasted textures to be mandatory? To add salt to the wound 4th version got removed from nearly everywhere)

Ijon likes working on other people's mods and likes contributing code, like to Samsara or Skullbag or the early Zandro GMOTA or all the fifty other projects that has his ACS. There's pretty much only three dedicated projects of his, Oneshot and Lelweps and Dakka. Everything else is either joint or for another person's mod.
Did it for years. Jumped from project to project depending on what interested him, leaving behind tons of rehauls and wizardly ACS. Even joined the weekly event team just to recode and fix more projects.
Then left because he got tired of Doom.

I'm still really worried about graphics.
Wolfenstein TNO wasn't terrible, but for the PC version, some textures were just unacceptably shitty. Modeling was great though, and the animations were top notch, so as long as those stay, and textures improve, we should be golden. I'm also a little scared about performance. I have a monster PC, and I can run GTA V maxed out, but Wolfenstein TNO will still occasionally stutter or drop frames. Doom, being fast paced, NEEDS to be well optimized.

You just gotta make them interesting.

What's more interesting? Having to put at least -some- focus on accuracy and making your shots count, or just holding down the trigger without really using the sights because gameplaywise, the rifle because you're playing COD and it just behaves like the SMG but with higher damage?

Not saying that ironsights should be mandatory or necessary, in fact, I'd like it if the rifle was pretty much the only weapon where you could look down the sights, and that's only so that it's useful for medium and long-ish distances. You can choose to use the ironsights on the rifle, but they're not necessary, you can still hip-fire it rapidly into scores of monsters and that works, because you can still let loose a decent salvo of fairly powerful shots in short time.

Just saying, if I were to put a rifle in a Doom game like that, that's how I would do it.
I'd make it an old battlerifle, powerful and accurate, but can't fire in full-auto and the magazine only holds 20 rounds. It's heavy so you can swing the stock like a club (preferably into the face of an enemy).

There'd still be a chaingun and maybe an SMG for rapid fire. And of course the plasma.

Regarding anonymity, the channel services on the network that #vr is on has a random name generator if you want something new each time. Serious Sam is not old school, it's different. Instead of giving you an open map to progres through and navigate it encloses you in large areas to fight of against a large swarm of enemies.
Serious Sam was a counter attack against early 2000s shooters and took the aspects that those games were lacking an amplified them (hordes and gore), however it lacks many key aspects of old school design that remained in the 2000s: Keys, somewhat open maps and puzzles.
The "Old School" games such as the new Shadow Warrior are Serious Sam clones, not Doom clones. The original Shadow Warrior featured open maps, keys and puzzles, which are rarely encountered in the reboot.

I really hope D44M doesn't make the same error.

Not really. Look at Doom 3.
It has keys (pda's and keycodes), switch puzzles and not enclosed level design (you can walk back through a level) and lots of weapons.
What it was missing was large areas with many enemies and fast paced action.
Serious Sam just takes the things early 2000s games took away from 90s shooters and cranks up the intensity.

Did you tinker with the .cfg? By default everything is disabled. Go turn on USE_ASCII or any of them that change things a lot to see if it's working

No, I left everything where it was. changing values in the cfg files seems ineffective. Scroll lock is indeed the default toggle key but that doesn't do anything.

Eh, it's not that better can't be done, it's that models clash with doom engine's aesthetics really badly. A lot of Doomsday's models are great pieces, they just look wrong in that context.

I'd love to see a good model pack, but that kind of kills most ability to be compatible with mods, and that's why most of us still play the game, so... We're kind of at a lose/lose impasse here.

Scrap decades of hard work on great mods, or reinvent the wheel, or play nothing but vanilla and a few select mods for eternity.

I'll stick with my sprites in the real world. I'd love to see fully realized models in my fantasy world though.
