I barely even scratched the surface (as >>2411067 points out) by leaving out some of the lesser known or debatable titles like Shatterhand, Vice: Project Doom and Street Fighter 2010.

>Cave Story doesn't even look like a Famicom game, more like a 16-bit era game. Even 32-bit.
The 16-bit and 32-bit eras brought us Monster World IV and Symphony of the Night respectively. Cave Story wishes it looked as good as either of those two games. At best, Cave Story looks like an early PC Engine game and that's being generous.

>This is the problem with young kids born in the 00s playing modern indies and thinking "oh, so this is 8 bit". Yeah, that isn't 8-bit. it's a modern game.

Agreed, I just played it for the first time a couple of months ago and had a blast. The setting and storytelling are both very unique and I love how the battle system emulates the core Panzer Dragoon titles. It reminded me of how much I miss the 90's when there were a ton of JRPG's being released that experimented with new kinds of battle systems.

The ambiguity of the ending is completely undone by Panzer Dragoon Orta though, that that that's necessarily a bad thing. Although I think it's kind of bullshit that over a century later the Empire is back and now they have dragons too.

Orta was next on my list, actually, was gonna hook the 360 up tomorrow and finally play that. I've had the copy for ages, just never got around to playing the Saturn games.

Kind of a shame about the ambiguity thing, but at the same time it -is- a story continuation.

Playing 5, which I adored, just before playing 6 didn't do 6 any favours either given 6's gameplay was considerably weaker and the story was only a tiny bit better.

Final Fantasy VI was one of those JRPGs that was pretty impressive at the time, but it's been outdone by other games in the genre since then. Graphically, it's a huge step up from IV and V and the colorful sprites and photorealistic backgrounds looked pretty beautiful at the time and they look less dated than the low-poly dolls of the PS1 trilogy (especially VII, which had an inconsistent art style). I would argue it holds up slightly better than VII in a way, since it allows a lot more customization, but the introduction of Espers (why did they called them that anyway) kinda blurred the differences between characters a bit too much for me.

It takes time to develop character you moron. If you play games for plot, then "it takes X hours" actually IS a valid argument.

If you play for the gameplay, then it's a different story. But FFVIII lets you basically do whatever you want from an hour in (as far as refinements and junctions, ect. So that's a non point anyway.

Also, a character being emotionally scarred because he never knew his father, his mother died, his "sister" was taken from him, his only mother figure disappeared and then he was raised to be a soldier isn't exactly "le bad writing" when he's stoic. It's actually rather realistic. Also, the fact that a girl pulled him out of his shell is VERY realistic.

So kindly go fuck yourself with your shitty arguments and generalizations.

(Repost of mine, but)

I had heard all the rumors, watched all the videos.
I knew it was bad, but.. OH GOD!!!

That game was awesome, but it also kinda depressed me as kid.

Has anyone tried the 3rd one ? I've just watched a video, and it looks like they have completely replaced the dark tone by some cheap cartoon humour.

Yeah. It's one of the few action games where I've felt kinda sorry for all the enemies I had killed.
It also made me want to play well just not to see the tombs and the casualties screen.

You know I think the general masses opinion of what the fuck FF7 was like has been horribly colored by Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus.

I replayed it not long ago and it's still as upbeat and goofy as I remember. Hell the only moment Cloud is an emo git is when it makes sense to the plot.

What even is a steam "Curator"?

>> No.2422745

>>2422735
Steam Curators is basically a new system on Steam in which groups can suggest recommendations on your store page and activity tabs. There's people like TotalBiscuit that have a group, and you can follow specific curators like "doujinsoft addicts" that recommend Japanese PC games, or "Old But Still Gold" and "Niche Gamer" that are self-explanatory.

An annoying thing is that you can't really block Curators from showing up on product pages, so you would have to see annoying people like Jim Sterling or Kotaku on occasion.

This is how I felt when I first played it. The gameplay was fun and all, but the real stellar thing to it was how it felt so much like living through a second childhood. I've replayed it to experience it the same way, but I haven't gotten that sensation back yet. I still think the game is great though.

So it's something you can sign up to, but people you don't want to see show up as well anyway even if you don't want them?

Basically. It's a neat feature to have if you find groups of interest/special people you can relate to, because I usually find some interesting gems that are either on sale or I can add to my wishlist, but ultimately it's a feature you can't ignore.

I'm not exactly surprised that there's no "off" for an integrated store feature, but at the same time, it is surprising that you can't opt to ignore the popular Curators at least.

I loved the game, but there was so much fucking text. On the plus side, I've learned English just by playing Death Gate and, ironically, it has helped me a lot with my studies .
I couldn't find the books in the local book stores sadly.
