played it for a while and I liked it but I think I fucked up character creation. I basically have a custom high elf adventurer who can't cast spells despite having high intelligence (like 76).

for some reason my luck stat is fucking 86 and I don't even know how that happened. probably a random dice roll issue in the beginning since it gives you random stats.
I get by just using weapons for now so I might restart. had fun though.

Every time I try to play Daggerfall something terrible happens to me and makes me want to stop playing completely. Most recently I climbed a wall at the first city I went to and immediately fell through the wall. Couldn't get out. Just kept thinking to myself "Oh my god why don't I get this game everyone says it's so great and it has to be right they can't all be in on it".

Even worse. Without a multiplier, you only have HALF your intelligence as magicka. Rounded down.

>>2405824
Try Alt+F11 next time something like that happens. Might have to press it a couple times, but as long as you use it shortly after you got stuck it should be able to get you out. You don't need cheat mode activated for this to work. Geometry glitches are just that damned common that they made this always enabled.

Bugs are as good a reason as any to be turned off. Even with all the patches and fanmade fixes certain aspects remain broken or unstable.

There's a lot of genuinely great aspects to it, but also a lot of major dealbreakers depending on the type of game you're expecting. If a lot of the praise you've seen comes from TES threads elsewhere, then beware that a lot of those posters have clearly just read about all its features and decided it's the best game ever before actually playing it themselves. A smaller portion of those posters are embittered Oblivion or Skyrim fans who are tired of Morrowind fans criticizing their games of choice for being "dumbed down" and are trying to use Daggerfall to claim that Morrowind is guilty of the same thing.

The smallest portion of those talking about how great it is are the ones who genuinely played and loved it. I'd like to see that group grow a lot. But there's no reason to force yourself if it just isn't clicking with you. Just try different builds and shit to get a feel for all the features, and try out different guilds and their quests. You can cycle through their quests forever using the "Get Quest" button from the questgiver NPC with no punishment for refusing, unlike the quests you get from the "Talk" menu which will take a few in-game days to come back if you refuse. It's great when you really don't feel like another 2-hour-long dungeon crawl but still want some direction and reputation. Finally, try following the main quest a bit and see if the plot makes you curious enough to keep progressing.

If after trying out a little bit of everything you find that you still can't appreciate it, then you likely won't be impressed by the rest the game has to offer. It's mostly more of the same.

>>2405890
Yeah, it's a main quest dungeon. There's a few cool blocks even in the random ones, but they're few and far between and still lower quality than the ones you encounter in the main quest.

I've played Daggerfall on and off for many many hours during the last four years, and I still love it. Especially the atmosphere is much denser than in the later games - many aspects of the game support this:

First of all the music is damn great. The overworld themes have a clear melody to them and just make you feel awesome. There's a Skyrim mod that puts remakes of Daggerfall songs in the game, and it made the game feel twice as epic already. The dungeon themes are full of unsettling ambient sounds that often blend with the actual dungeon sounds, so you're never quite sure what you're hearing.

Next thing are the graphics. The low resolution also reduces the details you can see, which adds to the uncertainty. Is that a corpse or an enemy? A vampire or a regular thief? Then the colour fade that distant objects have simply resembles the actual perception of the human eye.
There is also the artwork style which is much darker/bloodier than in the later games... the dungeons really feel nasty.

And finally the gameplay/balancing never allowes the player to be god-like and overpowered. Find an ancient lich for surprise, and he'll paralyse you and then kill you with two hits, just like vampires. Or have you already met zombies which bear a high chance of infecting you with some deadly disease? You just never know what's behind the next door, and you can never feel truly safe as there are always enemies capable to kill you.

I'm retarded, and I can't figure out how to start the daggerfall that you download from the elder scrolls website on DOSbox. How do you get it to work?

Is there anywhere a list comparing all the available faces from the different races in character creation?

Call me superficial, but I'd like to choose race based on how my character will look when I play, and don't want to restart the process because all the available faces are ugly.

Don't use that version. Use this instead to get a ready-to-play install including a hell of a lot of quest fixes that Bethesda never officially patched.

http://wiwiki.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN

Just download the installer and run it. At the bare minimum, install every Official Component and Fix except for DagSkills.

If you want some extra fan-made quests for more content, get the Unofficial quest packs as well.
If you want your skills and attributes to max out at 200 instead of 100, get DagSkills.
If you want to significantly increase your maximum view distance, get EyeOfArgonia from the Utilities. See below for how to use.

Once it's installed you're already ready to play, but there's three things you can do for an even better experience afterwards:
1. Open up DosBox.conf where you installed and find the line that says "cycles=max" setting in the cpu section. Daggerfall has a lot of trouble with strafing, swimming, climbing, and NPC movement in towns if your cycle count is too high. A much better value for this is "cycles=fixed 48000"
2. If you got EyeOfArgonia, here's how to use it: after you have created your character, save your game before you do anything, and be especially careful not to touch the "SOUND", "MUSIC", or "DETAIL" sliders. Once your game is saved, run EyeOfArgonia.exe to patch it. Afterwards, load your game to verify that the DETAIL slider has gone very high - almost off the screen. Never touch the DETAIL slider again or you won't be able to get it back up, but you are now free to change any other setting you want.
3. Enable "View Mode" and "Fullscreen" in the ingame settings to get a modern mouselook control scheme and better UI. You don't need to actually run the game fullscreen if you don't want to, just make sure the option with that name is enabled anyway.

I can't get over the randomly generated poop this game could have been so much better if they had went the ultima underworld route.

>> No.2407675

I don't mind the fact that it wasn't handcrafted, in some ways it's pretty damn cool just how many different towns and dungeons are out there. The sheer sense of scale as several in-game years pass with holidays, summoning days, seasons, and other such shit as you travel thousands of miles feels pretty good. I just wish there were more systems in place to give you a reason to visit other towns; since they're all just the same copypasted stuff there's no reason to travel to any except when a quest sends you to one, and you're not often going to care even slightly about the places you go to.

Really what I wanted was the faction/city/region interactions, as described by Ted Peterson:
http://web.archive.org/web/20060202020212/http://italia.planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/interview2.htm
>All of those rumors you hear about in the game, that this faction is warring with that faction, was meant to have real world consequences. You were originally going to be able to go and see a city under siege, but it was an impossibly complex task to work out. No one wanted all the important NPCs to be sprites who just yabbered their quests and never developed a relationship with the player. And definitely, to me, most regrettably, we fell short on the multiple resolutions of the game. All that lead up to who you give the token to, and things remain the same in the Iliac Bay.

That kind of stuff is what can make a big world shine, and is much more suited to that scope than for a smaller but more detailed world. It's unfortunate that so much was cut or left on the drawing board for time constraints, but at the same time it's also impressive how much they were able to cram in with what little technology and manpower was available.

Daggerfall could have been the ultimate fantasy sandbox game if so many things didn't get cut, imo. When DaggerfallXL is finished in the next 100 years I hope it'll have some of those cut features.

Also, my biggest problem with the dungeons in Daggerfall aren't the size or the random designs, it's the fucking 3D map which makes navigating hell.

I've never managed to actually finish the storyline since the game pretty much broke in the middle of it. Want to go back to it but I don't have the autism to come up with a decent melee skill build.

If anyone likes to read in-game, I made this to fix the issue in many books that caused several lines to clip past the right margin. Basically it adds word wrap to all the books so you can actually read them in their entirety without having to alt-tab to look up everything that got cut off. Not that you necessarily should read them in-game, not when you could just read them on UESP with much better resolution and formatting. Especially those clusterfucks of whitespace and inexplicably justified text that are half of the Fools' Ebony books. But now you actually can if you want to.

If you're playing a fan translation that edited any books, beware that this will overwrite them with the original English versions.

There's a trait that makes you immune to paralysis, and high elves (I think?) are immune to it by default. I always take the trait though because seriously fuck being paralyzed to death.

this is the one thing that ruined daggerfall for me.

on the one hand, the game is too buggy to play without knowing how to alt-f11.
on the other hand, the dungeons become shit and challengeless if you know how alt-f11 works.

>>2405861
imo, it's a game that desperately needs a bugfixing sourceport. the game itself could be awesome, and in principle, it is awesome...but it's so fucking broken that if you have even a single piece of knowledge about how to exploit it, it becomes shallow and un-fun.

>on the other hand, the dungeons become shit and challengeless if you know how alt-f11 works.
Well, I don't think it's that drastic. The only major advantage you can get in dungeons by using alt F11 is teleporting back to the entrance without need of Recall, which is done by saving, reloading, then pressing the keys. You could also use it to backtrack through recently entered teleporters or pitfalls, but for the most part it's not going to be a major help for navigating the massive dungeons.

You might be thinking of the [ and ] keys, which are the ones that cycle through all quest object spawn locations in the dungeon. Unlike alt F11, those are only available when "cheatmode" is activated in the z.cfg file, so of course it's expected that you can trivialize the game with them. Thankfully with use of the latest patch, the huge number of quests fixed by fans, and by not installing any unofficial quests, you will find that missing quest objects are a very uncommon occurrence. So much so that you can safely play the game without cheatmode, and only activating it temporarily in the rare situation where you feel like you've completely explored a dungeon yet have not discovered your objective.

However, as you say, it's still a buggy piece of shit. DaggerXL would be a godsend if it were to ever be worked on again.
