Turok 3 is best Turok.

Agreed. I'm a fan of the two character system and level design. I was pleasantly surprised by the title. Just wish it had a PC version.

>Just wish it had a PC version.
Apparently Night Dive Studios own the IP for the Turok games, and are going to publish Turok EX. I hope and dream that not only will Turok 3 get the EX treatment, but we'll be given proper SDK access so the game can be modded to have some of the ideas scrapped during development. Co-op, for example. And the cool scripted events that were cut for no apparent reason.

>> No.2388592

Night Dive Studios does not own the IP. They just licensed it from Classic Media, which is a subsidiary of DreamWorks.

You mean Yvree, the new Speaker chosen by the Council of Voices?

My guess is maybe Acclaim intended Adon to be the main character for Turok 4 with Yvree the antagonist.

Turok 3 handles fairly well with emulator mouse aiming because unlike the other three N64 titles, look spring can actually be disabled.

In the earliest prototype, from around May 2000, there is a police walker just sitting there after you exit the sewers. The two police officers in charge of it get killed -- they are replaced by two goofy looking civilian models in the later beta\final version. The walker is also removed in later builds. (There is also a patrolling police walker in this area that is removed in all later builds.)

Now what is very odd is that if you pick up the assault rifle laying on the ground nearby (which is removed in later builds) and walk up to the police walker, the Acclaim intro cutscene triggers - meaning that Acclaim had placed a broken event trigger on that walker.

I can't help but speculate that the police walkers were originally meant to be usable by the player. I would dearly love if someone would pull Turok 3 apart and get a look at its scripting. I'm sure there is all sorts of stuff buried in the betas.

Look at it this way, anon. Turok 3 is a game the average FPS gamer can finish. The same can't be said for Turok "jumping puzzles" Dinosaur Hunter, and Turok "Lair of the Blind Ones" Seeds of Evil. As >>2390456 mentioned, it has some bad bugs and broken behavior - the worst of which is the fact any monster that throws acid at you will hit you EVERY SINGLE TIME NO MATTER HOW FAST YOU STRAFE. Plus the game itself is riddled with odd glitches.

But overall, it's a genuinely good, shamefully forgotten entry in the Turok series that is worth playing twice because each character gets unique paths through the maps.

When people describe Turok 3 as Half Life with Dinosaurs, they're not exaggerating.

Another thing worth noting is that Turok 3 has much more responsive controls than the other games. It also allows you to disable look spring and invert aiming, something that was very annoying in Turok 2.

>> No.2390497

There is something very bonkers about Turok 3's weapon coding.

>Turok 2 shotgun.
>Ejects shell casings.
>Shell casings are silent.

>Turok 3 shotgun.
>No shell casings are ejected.
>THE NON-EXISTENT SHELL CASINGS MAKE "SHOTGUN SHELL ROLL ON FLOOR NOISES".

How the hell does that happen? Same thing with the assault rifle - unique SOUND of shell casings hitting the ground, but no shell casings rendered. Somebody needs to dissect the game to see whether there's a bug preventing the shell casings from rendering.

On a similar note, in one of the later betas, bullet casings splash when they hit water, making a noise. This was removed from final build - possibly because all the beta versions tended to overload and spam error messages about running out of audio channels.

Turok 3's "code monkey" was a man named Andy O’Neil.

Most people know him as the lead engineer on Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, and the President of Bluepoint Games, the team behind God of War Collection, The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and the Xbox 360 port of Titanfall. Coincidentally, a few of Turok 3's audio designers also worked on the Xbox 360 port of Titanfall.

The last chapter was barely functional mere months before release. I would love to talk with members of the Turok 3 team to find out what exactly went on during the final stretch of development.

The big problem with Turok 3 is how the levels feel awkwardly strung together. You reach the Lost Land from the Junkyard by... falling down a hole.

Wait... how does that work? The building you were in doesn't even align with that area of the Lost Land.

Also, I remember in the betas, the first level displays an error about a missing cutscene right at the start. Which kinda makes sense since the game fails to explain how you reached the top of that building. It's almost as if they just silenced the error message and said, "FUCK IT! NOBODY WILL NOTICE THIS GAPING PLOT HOLE BECAUSE THEY'LL BE DISTRACTED BY THE FACT THE ELEVATOR DOORWAY BLEEDS IF YOU STAB IT!"

Be aware that the first level is really glitchy, sometimes the cops will shoot you when you're not even close to them (these guys are meant to prevent you from going off the predetermined path), acid enemies will OHK at times, you might fall to your death because the next section failed to load and there's a section where zombies just constantly respawn.

The guy who made Doom 64 EX is teaming up with Night Dive to publish Turok EX. For money, presumably. They've apparently licensed the Turok IP from current owner, Dreamworks.

>It's not as bad as a lot of whiners make it out to be, but Seeds of Evil is still by far the better game.
Seeds of Evil has better gunplay. Seeds of Evil has better non-dinosaur enemies. (Reminder that Turok 3 has dinosaurs and they're just as good as Turok 2's, largely because they seem to be cut-pasted from Turok 2.) Shadow of Oblivion has better level design. Words can't quite encapsulate just how awful Turok 2's level design is.

>WOO! ANOTHER CORRIDOR WHICH LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE THE LAST CORRIDOR! AND THE ONE BEFORE THAT! AND THE ONE BEFORE THE ONE BEFORE THAT ONE! MAN, IT'S SO FUN WALKING AROUND THESE FOGGY CORRIDORS! LOOKING FOR KEYS AND SHIT FOR NO REAL PLOT-JUSTIFIED REASON!

Turok 2's salvation comes from the interplay of punchy weapons and genuinely interesting enemies. Shotgunning an enemy and watching them flop to the ground spraying blood is an integral part of the experience. (Something Turok 3 ruined with its instantly fading enemies.)

Also, Turok 2's N64 controls are sloppy and springy. Turok 3 was a huge improvement in that regard.
